Inactivehi guys….
okay, Trace has slept through the night since 5 weeks old, unitl about a month and a half ago he started waking like 3 or 4 times a night.
im so tired!
anyway, ive decided that i want to give a night time dose of zantac a try.
i called the pharm. and asked that i wanted it made without alcohol or the peppermint flavor. he said he can do that, he will crush up zantac tablets and put it in some sort of liquid, which he doesnt have in stock and will order for me. Does this sound right?
so i hope this works. im just wondering how far apart you guys suggest giving the zantac from the zegerid. i am thinking it should be 4 hours. i will have to give him his zegerid earlier in the day i guess.i am also thinking about starting some probiotics…
if this doesnt work then i will HAVE to try increasing the zegerid, its just insane right now because we already pay $125 every 10-12 days for it!

InactiveIt sounds like a compounded version of zantac to me. I am a huge fan of a compound b/c we thought it was so easy to give b/c we could give it at any time regardless of when Isaac had last eaten
We didn’t have zantac compounded but a ppi so they may be different. Is teething a possibility right now? I don’t know exactly what is going on but teething can ruin the best sleeper’s night.

Inactivehe has been teething off and on, but its just strange to me that he went from sleeping all night every night to all of a sudden waking 3-4 times a night for over a month now…

InactiveYou can get lemon effervesent tablets- Alana has a 1/4 of a 150mg tablet and I disolve it in about 20 mls of water (a whole tablet is disolved in 75mls). I give it in the teat of her bottle just before her feed. She loves it, it tastes so much better than normal zantac and no alcohol. I guess you would have to look at what the other ingredients are? A happy byproduct- nice lemony scented birps!
I’d definately reccomend it. Alana has five feeds per day, she gets all her PPI in the morning and doses of zantac at her second and fourth feed. Effectively she is getting a full dose of PPI and a full dose of Zantac. I used to give her Zantac at the last feed before bed, but found it didn’t really make a difference as long as she got the total dose. So maybe it does not need to be right at bedtime, maybe you could time it differently.
If I split her PPI dose, who knows maybe I wouldn’t need the zantac, but it is just more convinient for us this way- she is going into childcare for a few days soon and I don’t want to have to rely on them to do the PPI.
The plus with the lemon tablets- if she needs Zantac later on- for any reoccurence due to illness, teeting etc when the reflux is mosly gone and off the PPI- she is used to them!

InactiveReflux and teething together is horrible! We are going through this again right now but luckily it is the last teeth! I hope that Trace feels better soon!

Inactivenatalia, have you ever considered carafate? our ped gi had us give sylvia a dose before she went to bed, and during the day if she seemed in pain. (up to 4 times a day)

Inactivegood luck with the Zantac…we have had great success with that…although I do use the peppermint flavored one…but wouldn’t you know it, my daughter acutally likes it! 🙂 I have read some here and there about the stuff in the syrup…but I haven’t really thought much about switching…what makes the syrup so bad?
November 25, 2006 at 3:42 pm #18962Anonymous
Inactivei will be using the syrup, i am just having it made without alcohol.

InactiveI don’t think there is anything per se bad about the syrup- I was just concerned re the alcohol content so I switched. Alana liked the syrup and I never had much trouble getting her to take it, but at 5 mls a day I just didn’t want her exposed to even minute amounts of alcohol. Just a personal feeling- I don’t drink at all you see.

InactiveWell I didn’t know even that it had alcohol like that in it…I think I just assumed they did something to it to make the alcohol dissapate…but I should ask that it not be made with alcohol when I go to get it refilled…I wonder why they put that in infant meds to begin with

InactiveTo knock them out? That’s all Zantac ever did to Aidan, completely zonked him out!!!!! That’s one of the reasons I hated giving it to him all the time (ok and also the reason 2 times later when he got his first teeth and I was “I’ll do anything to sleep” tired that i DID give him some
). I haven’t used it in a while, but I keep it on hand for nighttime flareups. I never knew you could ask for it to be alcohol free…I think I’m going to ask about that and get it refilled that way!November 27, 2006 at 8:40 pm #19095Anonymous
InactiveAre you sure that it’s the acid that is waking Trace up? Is he on solid foods yet? If not, sometimes they start waking up as a signal that they aren’t satisfied with just a liquid diet anymore. Just a thought…

InactiveMy first guess would be teething, but I’d hate to think it’s taking a month and a half for the tooth to come through!
I like Naomi’s thought about needing more solids maybe? I know he had some bad reactions to certain foods (I’m thinking it was carrots?) but maybe he needs more substance???
My other question is what do you do when he wakes up 3 to 4 times a night? Everything I’ve read said that when a baby has been sleeping well and their sleep becomes disrupted (for whatever reason) not to fall back into bad habits. (Rocking, nursing/feeding, cuddling etc…) because they can fall back into the habit of needing that comfort for sleep.
Also, I know he has been sick for a while. Have you been to the doctor since he got sick from his flu shot? Maybe it’s an ear infection or something that will require an antibiotic…I know that doesn’t explain the month and a half thing…I’m just trying to brainstorm.
Good luck!
