Inactivei think Trace has RSV.
its been a week now since he woke up sick (last friday). it started with a fever for 2 days and an extremely runny nose and sneezing.
the doc said this would pass in about 2 days,
its been 7, and now he STILL has a very runny nose with a lot of buggers (tmi) and a cough that is gettting progressively worse.
i am wondering if at his shots last week he caught RSV at the office ,since it can live on like anything.
i dont know what to do.November 25, 2006 at 3:19 am #18914Anonymous
InactiveI would take him back to the doctor. RSV is serious stuff.

InactiveIs he wheezing?
It may just be a cold with a cough. Or bronchitis. There are so many viruses and bacteria that cause coughing. I’d take him back so they can listen to his chest and see if his lungs are clear or not.

InactiveI would go back to the Dr again…trust me, they know me by my voice when I call mine
…but I always say, better to err on the side of caution…keep us updated. I hope Trace feels better soon.November 25, 2006 at 11:51 am #18937Anonymous
Inactiveerr i called them they are closed due to the holiday.
i read about rsv and says it starts out as cold like symptoms with a fever and runny nose and then progresses to a cough like his.
but it basically said that in many healthy full term infants, there is nothing much to be done, you just have to wait for it to pass.
it said it can be dangerous if it starts to interefere with their breathing and stuff.
hopefully it wont get worse this weekend because i do not want to bring him to the ER.

InactiveAidan’s colds always last almost 2 1/2 weeks with a horrible hacking croupy cough, very annoying, but they eventually go away.Try useing a humidifier in his room, and they have these great little vicks plug in’s that are little mini humidifiers that help with congestion, I used them all the time when Aidan was an infant before he was old enough to use tylenol cold.
yep, rsv is a virus, they don’t really do anything about it unless it really begins to screw with their breathing, then I think they rx things like albuterol or other asthma meds (my cousin’s little girl had it at 8 months and they put her on a nebulizer) but luckily not all rsv cases end up that bad, a lot of them just end up as very long lasting colds.
I can’t believe the doc didn’t tell you that colds last for 2 weeks a lot of the time, especially if they have a nasty one.

Inactiveone of my kids had RSV when he was about 18 months old. the doc said that at that age they usually do pretty well. we could hardly even tell he was sick. the only thing that was different from a regular cold (that i could tell) was that when he was running around, he would start to wheeze with his breathing. we kept him away from other kids for about a week since it is contagious.
use a humidifier all day—-just move it to where ever trace is spending most of his time during the day. listen for wheezing, and watch his chest and neck to see if he is retracting when he breaths—this will give you and indication of whether or not he is having trouble breathing.
sylvia had those really expensive shots for RSV when she was a baby. i can’t remember what they were called, but they cost $1000 to $2500 a shot, depending on the dose that was required.

InactiveSorry to hear he’s still sick. I would take him back to the doctor when they re-open just to get him checked out. I personally wouldn’t start worrying about RSV just because he has a cold with a cough. Both my children’s colds last longer than a week- never two days like your doc suggested. I don’t think my kids have ever had a cold that’s gone away that quickly. Hailey has had bad ones that have started with fever, then cold symptoms for a week, then cough and cold symptoms for another week, then a cough for almost another week from post nasal drip. It’s never been RSV. The description you’ve read on the internet can be vague and fit almost any virus, and certainly fits every cold that my kids have ever had. I would try not to worry, but take him to the doc when you can.
