Inactivewow, this has been a long journey but I got my ped. to prescribe the 20 mg packets of Zegerid. Now Im concerned about all the confusion involved in the mixing process. I dont have a big mixing syringe. How have you been mixing it and how do I give the recommended amount using the 20 mg packets. I should have asked for the 40 mg packets but I was to nervous to request anything further because he actually said he would prescribe the medication. The calculator recommends 7-9mg three times per day. which is more than one packets per day right? My doctor I think was telling me to give him one half a packet per day. Well I am totally lost if anyone knows how I should do this I would appreciate it.

InactiveMy son’s dose is 10 mgs three times a day – 1 1/2 pack a day or 5 mls of the mix at a time. I mix the 20mg. pack with 6.5 mls of water to get 10 mls of the medicine and split it between two 5ml dosing syringes. Lots of people just mix it in a small cup and dose from there, but I use a big syringe because I found that I was wasting some of the med. the other way. I found my syringe at a compounding pharmacy. I guess you just need to decide if you are going to follow the dr. prescription or the MARCI kids recommendations..

InactiveThat is great news!! Hope it works for you.
We have had the best luck getting our syringes from the local veterinary clinic – they have great 35ml syringes and tip caps. If you don’t have any luck finding them, you can PM me and I would send you a couple. No need to worry about postage or anything – it is so minimal.
How old is your baby and what does he/she weigh?

InactiveMy baby is four months old . His name is tanson. I hope this works. Im really concerned about the dosage now and how to do this. I will check a couple of pharmacy’s tommorrow and see if they have big syringes. Can I mix more than one packet together at the same time?

InactiveI forgot to tell you he weighs around 13 pounds. Which packets do you use for your daughters Zegerid?

InactiveI was able to find the syringes at The Medicine Shoppe – they didn’t stock them but were able to order them for me. If you have a veterinary clinic nearby like Robin suggested, you may be able to get them more quickly.
I don’t use Zegerid, but many of the moms here have said that they mix more than one packet at a time….the mixed medication is good for several days (maybe longer) in the fridge.
Good luck! I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

InactiveI only mix one at a time but that’s because my syringe is only a 20 ml and to do two I wouldn’t have enough room to shake it up. However, I know several of the moms do many packets at once and it will keep in the refrigerator for 21 days. Just shake it up again before you give it to your son.

InactiveI am so excited that you got Zegerid. I know it’s not the perfect medicine for every baby but let me tell you…it has been a LIFESAVER for my Sarah. It’s wonderful and I can’t say enough good things about it!
Here’s how we mix ours…we have a large syringe (thanks to abbysmom!) and we mix 3 packets at a time with 20ml of water. This makes about 30ml total of medicine. I then squirt individual doses into little syringes with tip caps and put them in the fridge. I get those at Wal Mart. They are by the medicine dispensers, etc…it comes with two other medicine type things but I just throw those away. It’s about $1 for each little syringe w/ tip cap. The individual doses are good in the fridge for 3 weeks or at room temperature for 24 hours. I have enough syringes to mix about 4 days worth of medicine at a time, which is GREAT, because I’m not making it every day. The individual syringes are good for us because it’s easy to take a “dose” to daycare or when traveling/shopping, etc…
I’ve never mixed more than 3 packets at a time so I’m not sure how much water, but it’s roughly 6.5ml for every packet. Since your little one is getting 7-9mg per day I would probably round that to 10…that way you can squirt 5mL into each dose…works out evenly that way.
Um…I can’t think of anything else…but the mommys on this forum have been my godsend when it comes to any zegerid question…so definitely ask if you need help!

Good luck and I hope you see great results soon!

InactiveAbby is also on the 20 mg packets and our mixing method is what Amy does also. We mix 3 at a time which works great (at least you don’t feel like a mad scientist more than you need to
) Hope Zegerid works great for you as it has for us!!
