InactiveI hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! I haven’t posted in a few weeks, as things were at least tolerable….but I see it declining again.
Here’s what’s been going on….had the useless appt with the GI, who recommended starting Jacob on baby food (Oatmeal). That helped a little, but not enough – so, we started to slowly add neocate to his bottles about 10 days ago. We have worked up to 4 ounces out of 5 neocate (the other ounce is still soy)….
BUT he has these bumps all over his face and some on his body too. In addition, he has started to spit up a lot AND his sleeping at night (what sleeping?!?!) is getting worse and worse. COULD HE BE ALLERGIC TO NEOCATE???? The only other option is the oatmeal, but I am feeling like that’s not it because of the spitting up and sleeping issues. Has anyone even heard of a baby being allergic to neocate???? What am I going to do??? HELP!

InactiveJohanna,
It is possible to be allergic to Neocate. There’s another mom on here -Alexis’sMom – who’s daughter is allergic. Hopefully she’ll be on today and can give you some advice, but I just wanted to let you know that it can happen. Hopefully that’s not what it is though! Good luck, and I hope you can find out what’s bothering him.November 28, 2006 at 11:37 am #19162Anonymous
InactiveThe oatmeal could be the problem, oats contain gluten (well most of them) and my son (who is gluten intolerant) reacted at 5 months with a rash all over, stomach cramps and bloating, and went from being an awesome sleeper to screaming out in pain…so I see that as a viable option….
just an idea
oh and he was not a reflux kid, but did spit up a bunch after the oatmeal

InactiveYup, it is true! Taylor is allergic to neocate. She cannot tolerate the corn syrup in the neocate there is a very high amount of it. Many MDs will say there is no such thing as an allergy to corn syrup since it contain no protein but we had her allergy tested for the corn syrup via skin test and it was the largest postive long with corn and milk but the syrup was the worst. I spoke to the dietician and our Peds GI and both of them agree it is getting more common with the corn. At first we thought she was having problems with the neocate due to the long chain fats but it wasn’t. She was very gassy, increased refluxing, always twisting and turning her little body in pain, she would cry inconsolable we had to always keep her in motion for her to be semi happy to help with the gas. She was so blocked up lower GI that we had to use suppositories every day, she has always had low volume intake due to her DGE but on the neocate it was worse. We thought it was the oatmeal, so we switched to barley, when that didn’t work we used Simply thick but none of which helped. So we were determined it was the neocate and when we stopped she was much more comfortable but it took us a long time working with the dietician to find the right formula. I guess what I’m trying to say is an allergy to neocate is possible even though it is claimed to be completely hypoallergic. I would try switching the oatmeal first to make sure it is not the neocate.

InactiveJust an fyi, if it is the oatmeal switching to barley wont help since it is also gluten.
(I know that wasnt Taylors issue, but in case it is Jacobs issue)
We saw reactions to oatmeal and barley cereal they had the same outcome
