InactiveHi ladies
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing
My ds is 3yrs old now (has been treated for reflux since 2 weeks)
Ds has been CONSTANTLY playing with his mouth, tongue and licking his
hand?
If we ask him why, he gets deffensive…he doesn’t seem in pain?
I’m curious if anyone else had this issue?
Thanks, kim

InactiveKim, did it just start since taking him off the prevacid?

InactiveHi Lori
Nope, he seemed to be doing it even more before taking him off
He is 13 days prevacid free and eating/sleeping fine
I still feel like I am on pins and needles….
Hope all is well!
thanks,
Kim

InactiveOCD behavior? normal, weird 3-year old behavior? sometimes little kids get hooked on doing things for awhile, and then give it up for some new, weird behavior.

InactiveThanks Christine
I meant to add that it could be a little OCD….
I remember being very young and having some rituals myself..though I
don’t have any serious problems now
It just seems certain days he does it a lot more than others…he has been
asking for milk a lot today as he was playing with his mouth….but doesn’t
seem in any pain?
Kids…..make my head spin
Thanks for helping out!
I guess it’s day 13, and i am starting to feel nervous as last time we had
him back on prevacid by day 12…that was almost 1 yr ago

Inactivekim, i started with the rituals when i was in the 3rd grade—i couldn’t stop them, but i could change them. they drove me crazy over the years—-i was in high school before i ever heard of OCD. i don’t have serious problems with it either, it is just a little irritating. i hear that it is pretty common to have a certain amount of OCD behaviors. sometimes my kids and i get talking about the weird OCD things we do and we get laughing really hard!

InactiveWhat about his 3 year old molars?

InactiveMy 7 year old has OCD. The best thing to do when a child (I think all kids have little weird things they’ll do from time to time, like Christine said) starts a behavior or pattern like that is ignore it. You might want to keep an eye out as to WHEN he does it, is it during a stressful situation, or is he worried about something for some reason? Just a thought
When Austin gets nervous or anxious or even excited, he’ll put his hands up to his nose one at a time very quickly, almost looks like he’s about to sneeze or something…He was diagnosed at 3 (but his issues were WAY worse than just one little ritual).
Molars could be another explanation, maybe he feels them coming in but they don’t really hurt? My sister’s son went through this obnoxious period when his 2 year molars came in where he’d stick his hand in his mouth and down his throat and actually make himself puke!!!
Or he could just be 3-LOL, kids are just plain strange sometimes! I look at Aidan who’s almost one and just think “WHERE did you come from????” I would just ignore it, but I would also write it down so you’ll remember that he did it at 3 if for some reason it stops and then he starts doing it again at like 7-you’ll have a refernce point to look back on and go ahhhh ok see he used to do that all the time!
Sorry for the long post

InactiveJill, I don’t want to hijack, but just wondering if they say it’s best to ignore it or to tell them not to do it. Hailey pulls her hair out when she’s stressed or nervous- one half of her head is bald. I recently started telling her “no no” when she does it, but it turned out that she now does it and says “no no”, so I’m not sure if it made it worse or better.

InactiveThere are three year old molars
?????????? I thought we were almost done with this teething business!December 1, 2006 at 1:37 pm #19374Anonymous
InactiveThanks again everyone
I usually only ask zach WHY he is doing it (licking his hands etc)
He just seems annoyed I asked…and stops for a few secs
I would rather it be a little OCD than reflux pain…
He was to the ped recently and we were told he had all his teeth…I also
thought there were 3 yr molars but the ped said only 2 yr molars…now
I’m confused!!

InactiveLori- They told me just to ignore it when he was little, now that he’s older and is kind of able to understand WHY he does it, I can actually talk with him about it. My mom used to teach 4th grade sunday school, and she had a brother and sister in the class who both had some kind of disorder (I can’t remember the name) that caused them to pull their hair out. I think it had a lot to do with high stress/anxiety, but I remember her saying that it’s kind of rare.
Aidan plays with his hair, but he also hits himself in the head!! Literally, when he’s trying to go to sleep he balls up his little hand into a fist and bops himself in the forehead (not very hard)after rubbing, his eyes unitl he gets tired.
I’m always hyper sensitive to anything that looks the least bit “off” in my kids behavior b/c of all the issues my older son has….b/c I think that if Austin had gotten help for all the social anxiety stuff when he was much younger, he’d be much better off.

InactiveThere are 20 baby teeth and 32 adult teeth, so eventually children do cut an additional 12 teeth. The first 8 (of the adult/permanent teeth) usually don’t erupt until after age six around the same time that the baby teeth start falling out and the permanent teeth come in. The last 4…the wisdom teeth don’t usually come in until after age 18.

Inactiveteething 18 year olds-LOL I never thought of it that way, maybe that’s why teenagers are as much of a pain in the butt as 2 year olds???
