InactiveI spoke to the Peds Md today since I want to switch from compounded prilosec to prevacid capsules since Taylor hates the taste of the compounded prilosec she always gags on it and sometimes especially when she is not feeling well, which is a lot lately she vomits it along with whatever she ate prior up. The Peds Md only will dose with 7.5mgs which I know is very low since she is nearly 18lbs we tried packets on her prior but same as the compounded prilosec too much liquid volume, ends up throwing up. She says it would be too hard to divide the capsules into 7.5mgs but she had me divide the packets which is basically the same just with powder whatever? I don’t think she knows that I had to divide the packets myself and that there also was the little granules in the packets which is the medication, I think she thought it was all powder. Anyways she wants us to try solutabs, 1/2 of one she wants me to crush it up a little and put it in some baby food, but I know you should not crush up the tablets. Should I just hold the tablet in her cheek until it dissolves and I’m concern about the lactose in the tablets since she is allergic to milk. The Pharmarcy states the lactose is inactive and it is not the same as the one that is contained in milk, you have to be severely allergic to milk to react to the lactose in the prevacid. If you were me would you even try the solutabs or just give her the capsules. My instinct is to give her the prevacid capsules divided in half 7.5 mg twice a day it is a low amount according the Marci-kids but at least it is 15mgs vs. 7.5mg which is what the Peds Mds wants her on. What do you think? Sorry so long!

InactiveMy daughter has MSPI and has done fine on prevacid…I guess with MSPI it is the protien, not the lactose, that causes the problem. I love the solutabs…I never crush them and put them in food, I just hold the tablet against my daughter’s cheek and let it disolve…I don’t think you are supposed to give the solutabs with food, but others here could tell you more.

InactiveI’d probably do what you said, give her 1/2 tablet twice per day. Will you have eough solutabs to do that?
The cheek method never workded to Myles. He would squirm around and get angry and many of the little beads would end up stuck on my finger, so I stopped doing it that way. I found it better to dissolve the 1/2 tablet in a small amount of water (2 mls) and then use a medicine dropper to suck it up and squirt it into his cheek. It’s such a small amount and tastes good so he took it well that way. A small medicine dropper like the ones you get on a Mylicon bottle or Infant’s Tylenol works very well.
Good luck. I hope it works for her.

InactiveThe cheek method worked well for Kaelyn, but I swear that she had problems with the lactose. Her ped and the pharmacist insist that it’s not possible, but the last of her allergy symptoms cleared up when she stopped taking prevacid. She was sensitive to strawberry, so maybe it was the strawberry flavoring, but I’m leaning toward the lactose. That being said, the prevacid was a life saver for her.

InactiveYes, don’t put the solutabs in any food. I just break it up on a baby spoon with some water and feed it to Abby. I would never dose higher then the dr prescribes. If you’re dr won’t increase the dose I would find another dr. Is this dr a pedi GI? Not all babies need a high dose of a PPI to work. It just depends how bad their reflux is. Abby has been on 7.5mgs 2x’s per day since she was 10wks old and is now 8 months. She is still on that dose and is doing great! The older then are the less mg/kg dose they need.
