InactiveHi everyone,
I wanted to share this movie (kind of a photo montage) I made of Bryce’s first year. For those of you who don’t know, I’ll give a quick history so you know what’s going on in the movie:
Bryce was born 4 weeks early, and after he was born we found out he had a cleft palate and a serious heart defect. Neither showed up on any of the ultrasounds. He was in the NICU while we were trying to teach him to eat so we could bring him home. When he was 9 days old they found the heart defect & rushed him to Primary Chidren’s Hospital for heart surgery. They performed the surgery 2 days later, but it was unsuccessful for various reasons so they had to do an open-heart surgery the following day. This one was a great success, & saved his life. He remained in the hospital for a couple more weeks, and we were finally able to bring him home when he was a month old (with a feeding tube). Because of his long hospital stay & severe reflux, he never learned to eat orally, and when he was four months old he had surgery to repair two inguinal hernias and have a G-tube placed. He also had surgery to repair his cleft palate when he was 10.5 months. He also has ptosis (droopy eye-lid). When he was 9 months old he was diagnosed with plagiocephaly and started on helmet therapy.
Sorry! That ended up being kinda long, but he’s been through a lot in one year!
I’ve never tried a movie on photobucket, so I’m not sure what the quality will be like. Hopefully good!

InactiveThanks so much for sharing your little miracle with us! He’s so precious and I’m so happy he’s doing well now.

Does the helmet bother him? How long does he have to wear it? Can he eat at all now since his surgery?
All three of your boys are so handsome and they look so happy.

InactiveThanks everyone.
He’s actually all done with the helmet now (yay!). He had it for about 3 months, which was a long less time than I thought he’d need – and his head looks SO much better now.
As for eating – He was doing SO well after his surgery. It didn’t seem to affect him at all. But a few weeks later he started not eating as well. He just wouldn’t swallow at all. I’d feed him his milk and he’d just let it pool in his mouth. I thought he was teething again, but a week later he got a fever. I took him in to the doc because we were planning on leaving for Thanksgiving & I wanted to make sure he was okay to go. He didn’t have an ear infection like I thought, but the doc said he had a virus & his throat was a little red. So I figured the swallowing issue was from a sore throat. The fever only lasted that one day and he was fine after that, but he STILL isn’t swallowing!! It’s so frustrating. I guess he still might be teething, although it’s been like a month and I still see no evidence of teeth. Weird. I just hope he starts swallowing again soon so he can learn to eat.
Sorry! That ended up being kind of a long answer to your question!

InactiveThanks for sharing that, Heather! He’s such a strong little boy. And your others are so sweet too. Hope that things improve on the eating front soon.

InactiveI hope his swallowing improves soon. I bet when he’s just a little bit older he’ll wonder what all the interest is in food (having two bigger brothers), and he’ll start wanting to eat too.

InactiveHAPPY BIRTHDAY BRYCE!!!!! Sorry it’s a bit late, but I couldn’t not wish this amazing little miracle of a boy a happy birthday. He has overcome so much, and I bet inch by inch, he’ll work his way up to eating you out of house and home by the time he’s a teenager!!!!

InactiveWhat a beautiful tribute to Bryce’s first year! I had tears in my eyes as I watched it. I give you and your husband a lot of credit, I don’t know if I could have endured what you did, you are very strong! Glad to see how well he is doing and thriving. Best of luck to you and your beautiful family!
