InactiveI was here but then went MIA for about 6 weeks… Some of you might remember my 2.5 year old son Maxon and my 4.5 month old daughter Anika. Last I was here we were dealing with Anika and getting her the right dose of Prevacid. Still not 100% there but we are working with it and are improved.
But now the problem is Maxon. He went cold turkey off his Prevacid in Sept. and seemed to be doing fine. But now we are starting to put some pieces together and last night my husband and I are positive that he is suffering again…
See, he wakes in the night crying. We just thought it was nightmares and tried to not read books about monsters. But then a couple times he burped so I gave him a chewable Pepcid Complete (I had read about the Pepcid Complete on here for my daughter). He slept silently the rest of the night. This was maybe a month ago. About 2 weeks ago he, I, and Anika all got a stomach flu and he threw up 3 times. It really scared him because it had been almost 2 years since he had thrown up. Since then he has waken several times around 10 or 11 PM and he is hysterically crying… like he did when he was sick and afraid of throwing up again. As we hold him and try to figure out what’s going on he lets out a loud burp. This is like 3 – 4 hours after dinner AT LEAST! We try asking him several questions until we finally get him to sort of acknowledge that he has some pain in his throat or feels like he is going to get sick. (it’s very confusing for him). I end up getting him a Pepcid Complete and would read him a book. He’s already feeling better after the book. He just seems so scared. I’m certain that he is having real reflux and he is awaken by it and feeling as if he is going to throw up and that scares him. I had the same feeling when I was pg and it IS scary.
So now we have to figure out what to do. We could mess around with the doctor and the GI but honestly, they never did much for us. Each and every time it was like we had to prove to them that it was an issue. It just felt as if they thought we wanted to unnecessarily medicate our child. And with Anika it was a big fight to get a higher dose of Prevacid. Ultimately it was Dr. Philips and this site that helped us the most. It seems as though the Pepcid Complete seems to give him the relief he needs and it easy to administer – he loves it. That’s a big deal to us after a long time of struggling and stressing over getting him his meds. We would like to just put him on that but we just don’t know the long term safety of it to give to a 2.5 year old child…
Thoughts? Isn’t there someone from Marci-kids that I could talk to? I was over there looking for contact info but I wasn’t finding it.

InactiveSorry to hear that Maxon is having problems with reflux again.

A few months ago my three year old who had been reflux free since 9 months of age started having problems again too. I started giving her Tums when she complains and that always does the trick. I was very concerned (and I guess I still am), but my plan is to just use Tums for a while unless it becomes severe. Then I’ll have to take her to the doc and maybe start a PPI for her.
Anyway, the reason I’m telling you this is that initially when she started to have symptoms again, it was nearly every day, but now a month or two later, it’s only once in a great while. So, maybe Maxon’s flare up will only last a short time. Ellie had a flare up for a few days after a recent stomach flu as well….but she’s fine now and hasn’t complained at all.
I hope it’s just a temporarly problem for him. Please keep us posted.

InactiveYes! As I mentioned we did all have the stomach flu so that could be why it is seeming REALLY BAD right now. But he still seemed to be having problems before that.
Does the Tums give an immediate relief? I know someone described the Pepcid complete to me as like taking Zantac (the Pepcid part) and Mylanta (the complete part) at the same time. I like how it seems to give him relief immediately as well as (I think) beyond that.
Well, I did find the e-mail address for Marci-kids but I still think I learn the most from parents on here.
Thank you so much for responding Christine. It breaks my heart for him to be in pain like this. I think before having the flu he didn’t mentally know what was going on but now it’s like he is terrified of getting sick again.

InactivePepcid complete sounds better than tums, but I had not heard of it and I had tums in the house. So far it seems to do the trick for Ellie. It does seem to give immediate relief and she seems fine the rest of the night when I give her one.
My girls used to be very scared of throwing up. Liza no longer is, but Ellie gets very upset and apprehensive. It may just be because it feels so horrible, reflux or not.
Here’s Dr. Phillips email phillipsjo@health.missouri.edu
I hope Maxon is reflux free again very soon. It’s so hard when they are sick.

InactiveLeanne, do you give the pepcid complete to your daughter as well? If so, how does she take it…I had thought those were only in tablets (just wondering for Brianna when we try and start and wean her from her meds) .

InactiveHi Leanne,
I’ve been thinking about you lately, wondering how little Anika is doing. Haven’t seen you around for awhile. I’m so sorry to hear that Max is refluxing again. I hope it’s only temporary and he’ll be able to completely outgrow it.December 21, 2006 at 9:53 am #20838Anonymous
InactiveOK well I e-mailed Dr. Phillips and this is what he said:
Pepcid complete is fine for use at bedtime, the problem is that if you use it more than one time per day, the children will develop tolerance in a week or so, then it wonโt work. I would recommend that he take a Prevacid SoluTab 30mg in the morning (you can dissolve this in a teaspoon of water (make sure that all the little granules get in his mouth โ no chewing). Follow with water. The Pepcid complete at night 10mg.
Dr PhillipsI think Dr. Phillips must think that Maxon is worse than he really is. He never got over 15 mg’s of Prevacid – – he might have needed it but the reflux wasn’t as obvious for a child over a year and I didn’t know about the dosing like I do now for Anika. Anyway, from what I read above, it sounds like it is perfectly safe for us to give Maxon 1 chewable Pepcid Complete before bedtime. I’m hoping maybe he is going through something somewhat temporary like Christine’s daughter because he had the flu a few weeks ago. But then some of this started before then but maybe it just wasn’t as bad? And maybe he wasn’t as afraid of throwing up? Either way I figure we will give it to him every night for a while so he can feel better and repair whatever damage he has and then start weaning him back.
B’s Mom- Yes, I do give the Pepcid Complete to Anika. I really think she needs 30 mg’s of Prevacid but I was lucky to get 22.5 out of our pediatrician so I use the Pepcid to bridge the gap. This was Dr. Phillips recommendation. It makes a noticeable difference and seems to be the perfect “bridge” for her. I think the “complete” part that sort of acts like Mylanta and gives her immediate relief is a nice part of it for her too.
The way we give it to Anika is first we crush it. I ended up buying a pill crusher from the pharmacy so it was a bit more civilized and I didn’t have to keep a hammer in the kitchen.
Then I pretty much administer it the same as I do Prevacid Solutabs. I pour the crushed up pill in a little medicine cup. Then I fill another medicine cup up with a little water. I use a medicine dropper from a gas drops package and I suck up about 3 – 4 droppers worth of water. I mix it up. Then I suck it up with the dropper and give it to her. I got the berry flavor because I fortunately thought ahead in thinking that Maxon might need it a few times… and the other flavor although it is white (no mess) it is mint flavor and I think I personally have a hard time with that because of how horrible the liquid Zantac is for the kids. You can use either though. Anika takes it pretty good. Like I said, it’s berry flavored so she likes it and pretty much sucks it down. I usually already have a bib on her, I lay her on the hardwood floor, and I have a wipe handly for dribbles so I usually can save the outfit. It has gotten on some things though and normal laundry stain remover and washing takes care of it.Anika’s med schedule is this:
15 mg’s Prevacid around 5 AM (whenever she starts bugging us)
7.5 mg’s Prevacid at daycare around 1 PM
10 mg Pepcid Complete at home just before her evening bottle – so around 6 PM
This seems to work out well for us and better than 7.5 mg’s at 5 AM, 1 PM, and 6 PM… that was just WAY TOO HARD to time properly with her meals, daycare, etc. Plus, she seems to really need that higher dose in the AM after going all night.
Bryce’s Mom- Hi there! Sorry I went MIA. Things just got crazy busy. My husband and I are looking at making some MAJOR life changes that ultimately would be for the better of our family but it will mean leaving many good things that we are used to. If this happens though, I will be less stressed and able to spend more time being the Mom, Wife, Friend, Daughter that I want to be.

InactiveThanks Leanne…I might try the pepcid complete for Brianna. She is doing OK with the Zantac at night, but I hate that it has alcohol in it. And she can’t take any medicines in suspension for some reason (the way you get the other zantac) so hopefully this will work too. ๐

InactiveCan Brianna chew things? I might try giving her one to just chew up. I know when Maxon was her age he could have chewed this up but his maturity level was such that he would have pulled it in and out of his mouth and made a mess… I think he did that even just 9 months ago (when he was about 2 years old) with a chewable probiotic that I gave him. Now he does fine with both of them.

InactiveNatalia,
Sorry… got busy with the holiday so I’ll just copy/paste from above about the Pepcid Complete

It has gotten on some things though and normal laundry stain remover and washing takes care of it.It would be worth a try for you to use this with Trace. For some reason you don’t have to time it in relation to a meal (so Dr. Philips said) although we found that Anika did want to eat right afterwards (probably because of the relief of the antacid part). Since Trace is used to the Zantac I might try the mint flavor just because it is not colored and therefore won’t stain.
