InactiveHi. Has anyone else had their child’s spit up be pink (without foods coloring it)?
Here’s what’s happening: My 10 mth son has MSPI/MFPI and reflux. Something has been out of whack for several weeks – every night for almost 3 weeks, I have been up with him 5-7 times a night as he does his reflux posturing and twisting/struggling to find a comfortable position. Mylanta helps a bit but not much. We found a new, cooperative ped on Thursday who researched the Marci-kids info and ordered 40 mg packets of Zegerid for him (which we can pick up from the pharmacy tomorrow finally – delayed due to the holiday weekend). In the meantime, he is on compounded Prevacid (3mg/ml). For 4 days now, I have upped the dosage from 2 ml twice a day (as prescribed several months and pounds ago) to 4 ml twice a day. It hasn’t helped to end these endless nights!
Yesterday, I gave him baby food pears and sweet potatoes at 2:30 PM. At 7:30 PM, he spit up sweet potato-colored spit up all over me (5 hours later and 1 or 2 nursings later). Is it normal for babies to hold stomach contents for that long?
I normally supplement nursing with Neocate. Today, I’ve gone to only Neocate (pumping in the meantime) in order to eliminate the possibility of my diet being the culprit for his current problems. I did not give him any solids today either. At 7:30 PM, he refused to take a bottle – that has NEVER happened before. About an hour later, he spit up a big deposit of pink spit up. (Smelled like Neocate, not vomit.) Around 11 PM, he finally took a bottle, gave two big burps, and settled in to sleep around 11:30. About 15 mins later, he spit up a huge, giant quantity of more pink spit up. He was only mad since I was cleaning him up and changing his clothes and bedding – not crying in pain. He quickly fell back to sleep. Any thoughts about pink spit up? His normal Neocate spit up is white.
Thanks for any info/thoughts.

InactiveAn update: Last night he woke up only once (!!!!!) and pushed away the bottle after just 2 ounces and fell asleep. He slept two 4-hour stretches which he hasn’t done for weeks. And his reflux seemed under control.
So, my question is: I’m wondering why the sudden change? Is it possible that it took four days for the increased dosage of compounded Prevacid to take effect?
Thanks, Dianne
(P.S. I’m going to also post this under Medicines.)

InactiveI’ve read in these posts that Prevacid can cause pink or purlpleish colored spit up. I’ll see if I can find it for you.

If he’s spitting up huge quantities of pink I’d be concerned and take him to the doctor, but if it’s just spit up with twinges of pink I’d feel more comfortable assuming it’s from the Prevacid.
Good news about his sleep last night. And, yes it can take a few days or longer for the increased dosage to work, so hopefully things are taking a positive turn now.
About the delayed spit up…..Myles did this a lot. He’d puke up food he ate five hours ago. This is probably due to DGE which Myles definitely had and has thankfully outgrown.
I hope he continues to sleep like he did last night. Keep us posted.

InactiveI agree that it can take several days…sometimes a few weeks, to see a difference from a med increase. Also, if the spit up just has a bit of pink in it, I wouldn’t worry too much, but i would mention that to your ped. If it is a lot, I would get it checked otu as soon as you can…better to be safe. I hope his sleep continues to get better.

InactiveMy daughter gets pinkish/purplish spitup at times from her prevacid. It is sometimes several hours after administering it. It tends to be little granules of the colored spots (but slightly bigger than the granules in the prevacid solutabs). So maybe it’s the prevacid? BTW the doctor said that it is okay.

Inactiveyep, when we were on solutabs… there were dark purple dots in his spit up as well. are they like spots as laurie mentioned or like streaks? does the actually spit up contain a lot of pink??
i am not sure if the compounded form should produce those little spots though… i only experienced it with the solutabs…
