InactiveHi, I posted this question along with another in the “Help” section under “pink vomit”.
My 10 mth old son has been on compounded Prevacid 3 mg/ml, 2 ml 2x day since Oct 31. It hasn’t been working at all to control his reflux for the past 3 weeks. I finally found a new ped on Thursday who researched on Marci-kids and called in a prescription for Zegerid (40 mg) per the website’s dosing instructions. It will be ready for pick up today (due to the holiday).
In the meantime, since Thursday night – 4 days ago – I have chosen to give Andrew his medicine at 4 ml 2x day. It hasn’t made any difference, it seems. He has been up with reflux posturing and pain 5-7 times a night. But last night, he only woke once and wasn’t struggling with reflux even that time.
There are so many factors in my son’s life to consider as far as the reason for pain – he has MSPI/MFPI also, and he’s teething. But the nighttimes have definitely been reflux problems.
So, it is possible that it has taken 4 days for the medicine to control his reflux?
Thanks, Dianne

InactiveHi again. I answered your other post.
I do think it’s possible for it to take a few days for a higher dose to take effect.
But, it could have just been a lucky fluke that night, so I wouldn’t be convinced the higher dose is working unless it continued for many more days.
Also, if you stay with the compounded Prevacid you should probably read the information about compouneded PPI meds because many pharmacies don’t prepare these compounds properly and that causes the medicaiton to lose it’s effectiveness. http://www.marci-kids.com has some information about it, and here’s link from the Medicines Forum that talks about it.

Inactivei just want to let you know-that Dr Phillips suggests not to mix zegerid the way the website states. his instructions to several of us was to mix the packet with 6.5 ML of water instead of 16.5, this way you have a higher concentration. we use the 40 mg packets as well and make a 4mg/ml concentration so there is less medicine to get down.
he also informed us that the 40 mg packets do not have enough sodium bicarb buffer, therefore it will be degraded in the stomach. so if you are giving less than 3.5 ML at a time, you have to add mylanta cherry supreme (or tums dissolvables) to protect the drug in the stomach.good luck!
