InactiveThe Marci-kids site says you need to get a 20 mL or 30 mL oral dosing syringe to prepare the med. Is that necessary? My pharmacy is supposed to have the 40 mg Zegerid ready for me to pick up today. If I can’t find one of these large syringes today, can I use something else to mix it in?
Also, should I stop giving Andrew the compounded Prevacid and start giving the Zegerid instead? Or should I overlap them until the Zegerid starts taking effect? Any thoughts?
Thanks, Dianne

InactiveI ordered the syringes from The Medicinne Shoppe. Others here have mentioned that they were able to get them from veterinarian clinics.
Dr. Phillips does recommend using the syringes instead of other types of containers because you will not lose any of the doses with the syringes, but if you use another type of container you may lose some of the medication as it sticks to the side of the container. For now until you get the syringes it would probably be fine to use a small container with a tight fitting lid.
I don’t think you should give both meds at the same time, so I’d stop the Prevacid when you start the Zegerid.
Good luck!!

InactiveDianne,
We switched from compounded Prevacid to Zegerid too, and I just gave the Prevacid one day and started the Zegerid the next. I could tell when the Prevacid was totally out of his system (about 2-3 days later) because his stools went from green back to the mustard yellow color.

InactiveI have several extra 35 ml syringes – just PM me your address and I would be happy to send them to you. I mix up a triple batch in one and it works great.

InactiveOnce you’ve made up a batch of Zegerid in one of the large syringes, do you just give your child the medicine straight from that syringe or do you dispense the correct dose into a different syringe or dispenser of some sort?
I am thinking that it would be hard to give the exact correct amount of the med straight from the large syringe (plus unsanitary to put it in his mouth then put it back in the refrigerator).
Also do you need to shake up the pre-made batch of med again before dispensing each dose?
Thanks for helping me get a handle on all of this. I am holding off to start the Zegerid for another day or so since Andrew has been actually sleeping better for two nights on the increased dose of compounded Prevacid I’ve been giving him for 6 days. For two nights in a row, he has only woken once! (That is following almost three weeks of waking first 3-4 then 5-7 times a night!) I expect that he will slide backwards with his reflux as we switch from Prevacid to Zegerid and I am almost afraid to make the move now that sleep is a possibility for me again. Plus, I have $90 worth of compounded Prevacid in the fridge that I hate to throw away now that it is finally doing some good.
Thanks again, Dianne

InactiveDiane:
I dispense it from the big syringe to a smaller syringe for each dose. I bought a bunch of 6ml syringes and when we go somewhere, I fill up a bunch of smaller syringes which makes travel really easy. I usually shake the big syringe each time I dose just to be sure it is mixed.
As far as him “sliding backwards” I really wonder if that would happen. Both Prevacid and Zegerid are PPI’s so if the one is working, it shouldn’t make a huge difference when you would switch. I could be totally wrong – maybe someone else will have a better idea on that.
Good luck!!
Robin
