InactiveHello all,
I went to a new doc today and I like her, but she only suggested moving my sons Prevacid dosage from 7.5 mg to 15mg. spread over 2x day. This is better, but still not what Marci-kids.com suggests. She said to try this for 2 weeks, and if no improvement we would try Reglan (DS spits up all the time, many times several hours after eating). I have actually already been giving him 15 mg. a day for 2weeks, but did not want to tell this to new doc as I didn’t want her to think poorly of me. DS has had some improvement on these, but i do think he would benefit from a higher dosage over 3x day. Does anyone have any experience w/ Reglan? I would appreciate any help on this.
Thank you all!
DS-3mos. reflux, off Zantac, on 7.5 mg. of 1x/day for 2wks, 15 mg. for 2 wks.

InactiveHello-
My son was on Reglan briefly when he was first diagnosed with reflux. It actually helped him a lot with the spitting up. However, he seemed to outgrow it fast and it stopped working. He was then put on Prevacid which helped him a lot (although he spit up tons). Later I found out he has DGE (which is what relglan is supposed to be used for). He was put on Erythromycin (an alternative to Reglan) and it made a huge difference. I like it because it doesn’t have the scary side effects that Reglan does, but it works well. It just depends on the baby which one works best though. You might want to ask about having testing done for DGE before your son is put on Reglan (or another DGE med). The symptoms you’ve described do sound like it could be DGE though.
Good luck with the increased Prevacid dose! I hope the 15mg is enough. If you do think he needs more, you might try talking to a family practice doctor. That’s where we initially got our higher dose. Bryce is taking Prevacid 3x day and he does SO much better with 3 doses.
Again, good luck!

InactiveIf he truly has DGE then I would ask for a different medication than reglan. If you do a search on the internet you will find that the makers of reglan are being sued because of the side effects that it caused. Children can be on reglan and show no sign of side effects until they come off of it. The side effects are similar to those found in parkinsons patients.

InactiveThank you both so much! I am not familiar w/ a condition called DGE, however. What is this? Either way, if the Prevacid doesn’t work, I think I will ask the doc about upping his Prevacid dosage or if there are any other meds to try as I am apprehensive about Reglan. With the erythromycin, does this have any side effects? I seemed to remember that in the past, it caused tooth discoloration. I know this would be a minor side effect, but I was just curious.
Thank you Heather and Kathleen!!

InactiveDGE is delayed gastric emptying, or in other words the stomach doesn’t empty as fast as it should (this might be why he spits up so much and so long after he eats).
Erythromycin can cause tummy cramping in some babies. They usually get used to that however. Bryce never had this problem, and it helped him tons! Some babies can handle it; some can’t. I haven’t heard about the tooth discoloration though.

InactiveI was able to get the marci-kids dose for Myles from our family physician. I think they are sometimes easier to convince because they deal with reflux all the time with their adult patients and they are more familiar with the reflux meds.
Also, I printed and faxed the marci-kids info and that’s what did sway her to let us try the higher dose for Myles. Once he was on the marci-kids dose (10mg / 3 times per day) things turned around and he did great on it.

As for DGE, I’m quite sure Myles had it. Our doctor thinks he had it but she prefers not to test for or treat DGE unless it is severe enough to cause weight gain issues. I was unsure about this at first but once his pain was gone (on the high dose of Prevacid) he ate enough to grow normally even though he spit or threw up almost constantly and often many hours after he ate. I think that babies with DGE actually absorb more nutrients from their food because it sits in the stomach so long.
Of course, I’m not trying to dissuade you from treating his DGE, just sharing another perspective and course of action that worked well for us.
Good luck and I hope you find the right treatment plan for him.

InactiveThank you! If the throwing up isn’t really hurting him, then I’m ok w/ it. What I would really like is the Marci-kids dose of Prevacid for my son. It just seems that it is taking a lot to convince docs of this. I guess I’ll wait the 2 weeks and see how he is doing, but I ‘m hoping that I can get the higher dose of Prevacid for him.

InactiveYes, that’s what I wanted and it took some hard work to get it, but it was well worth it. I hope you can convince his doctor. Good luck.

In the meantime you can maybe try some Mylanta Cherry Supreme. Many of us have used it and it can give some temporary relief. I used to give it to Myles before a feeding and it did help some. I’m not exactly sure on the dosing for a three month old but at 5-7 months I gave Myles about 1/2 teaspoon. I think some of the moms here have said they used 1-2 mls for a younger baby. Too much will cause loose stools, but it’s really pretty safe.

InactiveWe tried Erythromycin on Taylor but like Bryce’s mom mentioned very hard on the tummy so we had to stop. We had Taylor on Reglan and she did fine on it no side effects really seemed to work for her but she has been off of it for awhile now since she has been so sick and on so many other medications, vomiting etc so I stopped it but once she gets better I am going to continue to give it since it was working for her, not the best but better than when she is without it. Taylor’s problem is not spiting up it is lack of appetite, she only takes 2-3 oz and is not hungry for 5-6 hours.
