InactiveWe haven’t had one yet, just the endoscopy. The scope reassured me that there was no damage. I’ve wanted a probe so that I could see if what I thought were reflux episodes at night were or weren’t. I’ve never felt good about sleep training her and letting her cry because I’ve felt that she was in pain from her reflux. I’ve always thought that if I knew for sure one way or the other it would either help me to know that I was doing the right thing, or give me the comfort to make a move in the other direction. Our doc won’t do one- he says that for Hailey it won’t change anything. He feels that we already know that she has reflux, that she’s not a candidate for a fundo, she’s on the max dose of meds he’d give given that there’s no damage on the scope, and so nothing that would show up on the probe would change Hailey’s future. I have mixed feelings about it. But as for the endoscopy, it was really a good thing for us. Hailey still had some Sandifer’s and I worried about damage, though I was pretty sure that the prevacid had helped b/c she’d become so much better. It just helped to confirm things for us. Hopefully someone else will post.

InactiveA fundoplication. It’s the surgery to stop reflux. I can’t remember exactly how they do it, something like wrap the esophagus around something (the stomach?). Hopefully someone else will chime in. There are various types. They have a high rate of complications so tend to reserve them for cases where nothing else works or where there are additional complications from the reflux.

InactiveHi,
We have company coming in about 45 mins for a few days, so I”ll try to answer briefly until I can get back to you guys….hopefully soon!
Okay, Dianne, the ph probe and endoscopy tests are wonderful tools, and I was desperate to have them done at the time, however they are a bit invasive and require some drugs/anesthesia. The endoscopy is a scope that goes down teh throat, and can “see” the inside of hte esophagus and stomach and I think even got biopsy of tissue in teh first part of the intestine as well as the stomach walls. Ours showed mild esophagitis, which the ped gi said was good, it meant his meds were working (the zegerid). The ph probe is a probe inserted into the nose, down the back of the throat (they inserted it while Lucas was still drugged from teh endoscopy) and it records the timing and duration of every reflux episode during a 24 hour period. They sent us home with it in, and with little arm restraints for Lucas cause he was 10 mos old and crawling and the restraints kept him from pulling it out. I don’t know that either test changed our plan, YET it was HUGE for us to know about the hiatal hernia and also great for me to know the frequency of his reflux episodes. You start to feel like you are going crazy, so now I have some numbers to throw out there whenever someone sounds testy or I get the questions from family members, etc. etc. It even really helped my husband to understand the severity of the situation and also to understand why our child had all these problems and that it wasn’t in my head.
I am wondering what you were doing differently when he was doing so well. I am wondering if he’s having trouble with solid foods period? How much solids is he getting? Did the reflux rear up around the time of introducing solids? You are so great for doing this elim diet. It’s so hard, I really understand.
As for beds, I slept with Lucas in a queen sized mattress on teh floor from age 7 months until about age 24 months. Husband was in “our” room, another room. Lucas slept propped up on anythin and everything. At the younger ages, he was just propped on pillows. I was right there and waking so often I didn’t worry about suffocation. prior to 7 mos, he slept in a bouncy seat, car seat, elevated with a tucker sling in teh crib with teh mattress on an angle (propped on dictionary, etc.) He seemed to feel best and still is, on his left side, with a pillow from about his waist or rib cage on up (underneath him), and his right arm thrown back behind him in a bit of a twist. There is a yoga pose that looks like this, but I can’t remember what it’s called!
For Aloe Vera, I bought 100% organic Lily of the Desert brand. I found it at the local Wild Oats, but I have also bought it at Whole Foods while on vacation. Lots of health food stores might have it. I am sure you could order it, too. My chiro said it should be organic, so we went with her suggestion. I think I was giving it 2-3 times a day probably a few mls each time. It’s the juice of a plant, so I thought of it like apple juice. I called it medicine to Lucas and used the syringe just like with meds. You could do a search on this site for the brand name and my old posts would show my dosing, probably. We used it for quite a while. I should start it up again

Lori, for the chiro, I had seen this chiropractor on and off for little injuries over the years so i trusted her and she then told me her training was all with pregnant women and babies. I was desperate and trusted her so we went in. My husband had even seen her for some hip issues, so he trusted her as well. The adjustments were like little touches, not huge cracks or anything. She was very gentle and once when I left he slept 7 hours straight that SAME NIGHT (this was while we were still having problems). It was the only thing over the years that has had an immediate and dramatic result. I mean, it was like magic!! I can ask her if she knows how to find a good chiro in your area for something like this. You, know, they probably have conferences and the like, like other professions or maybe have professional organizations that you join or something. The other thing is to start asking around locally. Where do you live (what city or province?) Who knows, she might even know someone near you!
I think that covers it for now ladies. If I don’t check the postings it’s because we are busy wiht our houseguests. They leave on Sunday morning. Hang in there, Dianne and I hope we can offer something that helps!
