InactiveHi, my son is 12m and has been on Zegerid for approx 5m – 15mg twice a day. He was on Alimentum and successful weaned to Whole milk without difficulty.
We had his GI appt a few days ago and she said to start weaning the Zegerid. She instructed me to just stop giving the PM dose and observe him. I understand that weaning PPIs can be difficult.
Recently he has started spitting up, a tiny amount – perhaps 1/4 tsp in the PM/evening. It smells strongly of vomit. He hasn’t spit up in months, so this is concerning me a bit. He isn’t having any other symptoms, no signs of reflux related discomfort.
Should I go about this wean differently? Is is normal to have some spitting up whil ethe tummy gets used to having acid in it again? I just don’t know what is normal during this process, and certainly don’t want him to experience any pain from weaning.
I plan to call his GI on Monday, however I’d be interested in any opinions/experiences you all might have to share with me.
Thank you.

InactiveI am just now considering the weaning process myself…although I’m not in a huge rush. Soooo, I can’t offer any advice from experience but I’ll be anxious to hear what the other moms have to say!
I am glad to hear that he doesn’t have any symptoms of reflux so far. My first thought would be to drop the AM dose and not the PM. You would think that they’d need the meds to help them sleep through the night but I could be way off. And if he’s doing fine so far without the PM dose (other than spitting up) then I’d say it’s fine. Sarah gets her Zegerid 3 times a day so I’d probably drop her mid day dose first when I decide to.
How long has he been weaned to whole milk? Did the spitting up happen at all around that transition time?
Sorry I don’t have any answers. I hope it’s a smooth transition for everyone and he can be med-free and HAPPY!

InactiveWhen I contacted Dr. Phillips about weaning he said that I was to eliminate the mid day dose for one week, then the morning dose for one week, then totally off. I don’t know what you would do about kiddos who only get it twice a day – I guess I would shoot for eliminating the morning dose if I had to make that choice. We are thinking about trying to wean Abby soon so I am a bit nervous.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do and please keep us posted on how it goes

InactiveNot sure. Just wanted to wish you luck. I personally would cut out the am dose first to keep him comfortable at night, but that’s just my opinion (since we’re nowhere near weaning).
