InactiveOK, Brianna has started this wierd thing and I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. At every nap (almost without fail) Brianna will wake up about 30 mins into the nap screaming. But she sits up for only about three minutes, and then she falls back asleep. I don ‘t really think it is reflux because she does go back to sleep and sleeps peacefully for anywhere from 30 more min to 2 hours! Could she be having bad dreams? Any other thoughts? Also, we still have her crib at an incline (slight…just one book) and most naps she ends up falling asleep with her head facing downhill. Could it be blood rushing to her head?

InactiveHi Emily,
I don’t think it’s blood rushing to her head, but I’d take the book out anyway. I stopped inclining for both Ellie and Myles once they were moving around in the crib.
Heres an idea of what it might be.
1. She still waking every 30 minutes during that light sleep stage that usually ocurrs 30 – 45 minutes into sleep, and she’s just groggy and miserable, the way you feel when you wake up too soon. I think you said recently that she just started sleeping past 30 minutes for naps, right? So, I’m thinking that when she comes to that light sleep stage she wakes up too much because she’s not yet accustomed to just rolling over and falling back to sleep, and then she finds herself awake, very tired and probably a little foggy, so she screams some, and then she gets her bearings so to speak, comforts herself and goes back to sleep.
It could be nightmares, but I think this is less likely because it would probabaly happen at night as well if it was.
I doubt she’s in any pain because I don’t think she’d go back to sleep and she probably wouldn’t go back to sleep if she was scared either. So, I think it’s probably just her way of getting past that 30 min mark for now and it’ll get better with time.

Inactivechristine,
That is kind of what i was thinking. When she was younger, I would rush up there when she started to cry and bounce her on my exercise ball until she feel back to sleep. I wish I had videos of that now. She was so funny. She would only fall back asleep if I bounced her in a seated position (Like she was seated in a chair). She is a funny little girl. I think maybe she still holds out hope that I will come up there.

Funny! I used to rush in and give my kids nuks, so then they could only fall back to sleep with a nuk in their mouths. I guess that’s a lot easier than bouncing on an exercise ball, so I shoulldn’t complain.
