InactiveChloe has been doing bananas now for thee days. She has not likde them and made a face and a shudder every dAY. i PRETTY MUCH HAVE JUST BEEN GIVING HER A BITE AND THEN (SORRY CAPS LOCK)she will refuse any more. So, today she took one bite gagged and threw up. I am assuming it is because she gagged that she threw up vs a reaction. I know it’s a dumb question but I just wanted to make sure I shouldn’t consider it an allergy. I will stop the bananas and try again at another time.
Another comment, I am having the same problem that Natalia is having in her solids post. Chloe has been trying solids for about 3 weeks and hse will take a bite or two and clamp the mouth shut. She also makes a face the whole time she’s working the food around in her mouth. I know it takes a good 15 tries before a baby will like a aprticular taste but she’s just not warming up to it at all. She is interested in everything I eat or drink.
Thanks ladiesFebruary 3, 2007 at 11:50 am #23952Anonymous
Inactivewith the throwing up, it sounds like her gag reflex is still way too strong for solids.

InactiveWith Colt he was a very late eater. I think he was finally eating solids really good at 15 months. One thing I learned during all that was he hated jarred baby food. Once I pureed my own foods and let him at least suck on what we were eating then he began to eat. I tasted everything I gave him and I don’t know if you have tasted the bananas or not but jarred ones don’t taste very good. Have you tried sweet potatoes? That seemed to be the only food he would eat from the jar.

InactiveThanks for the responses,
Natalia- I’m not sure if she has a problem with her gag reflex because she has been trying solids since around the 5th of Jan and she has only gagged once other than this time. I think she gagged because she doesn’t like the bananas. To me they are very sweet and she also gags at times with the zegerid which is sickeningly sweet.
Kathleen-I don’t think Chloe likes the taste of the jarred baby food either. We have tried sweet potatoes and she doesn’t like those either but she never gagged with those. I have been reading about making our own food for Chloe.February 3, 2007 at 4:04 pm #23996Anonymous
InactiveHome made baby food tastes so yummy. I know of many moms who bought a magic bullet and made it that way. I used to gobble up all of Hailey’s rejected purees

InactiveIt probably took Alana three weeks to get it with the solids. The advice I got at the time, was just keep trying, don’t push it but just keep offering. By this stage I was trying a couple of times a day (and getting worried
). It was actually mashed mango day when we got over the hump and she started swallowing- she then just took off (but absolutely hates banana, real banana that is). I would just take her cues, keep offering, changing the texture and consistency. (some days Alana will like runny puree but sometimes she wants it a bit more “mash”). When I was all anxious about it, my speech pathology friends said just even a taste or two will get them started with the whole oral sensation thing and most will pick it up with time. Goodluck.February 3, 2007 at 8:40 pm #24025Anonymous
InactiveMyles absolutely hated bananas and he always gagged and threw up when I fed them to him. After he got used to other foods I tried bananas again and the same thing happend….gag and puke. I figured out finally that for him it was that they are so thick compared to the other jarred baby foods. I began thinning them with breast milk or formula and then he would eat them. Or, I’d mix them with some pears to thin them out some. That usually worked too.

InactiveTherese- thanks for the info about Alana’s experience, it gives me hope that Chloe will pick up soon…I’m getting nervous that I’ll be breastfeeding forever (exclusively that is).
Christine-I’m glad Chloe isn’t the only one with the bananas. I did try the breastmilk the last few days to thin it and try to make it taste more familiar..oh well. I just hope it doesn’t happen again anytime soon. It was a pain to clean the highchair. I had to take astraps off and everything

InactiveChristine- I tried the thinned bananas this morning as well- it worked a treat. Thanks for the tip- another fruit I don’t have to cook and puree

InactiveThat’s great, Therese!
I could never understand why Myles would just gag with this look of horror on his face when I put a spoonful of bananas in his mouth. One day I had one of those “lightbulb moments.” Aha! They’re much thicker than everything else he eats. So then I started thinning them and he was very pleased with me.
