InactiveHi everyone,
Just thought I’d give a little update on Bryce – okay, I doubt it will anything but little.
After four months, we finally got a call back from the geneticist. She confirmed that Bryce has a genetic disorder called Kabuki Syndrome. This sydrome encompasses Bryce’s heart defect, his cleft palate, ptosis, skin tag, his slow development, his low muscle tone, his eating problems, the reflux & even his poke-out ears (We wondered where those came from
). It’s nice to finally have an answer. The good news is, we were told that it’s not likely we’ll have another child with Kabuki Syndrome, so that was a relief. The geneticist was so nice, and asked lots of questions about Bryce, then answered all of my questions. I told her about his ptosis and the need of surgery for it now. She strongly suggested that we have him seen by the opthamologist at the children’s hospital before we proceed with surgery. We’ve been seeing a pediatric opthamologist, but he’s not from the hospital. She said it’s such a specialized field that we want to make sure he’s seen by the best. I felt better about him having surgery at the children’s hospital anyway.
I also had a bit of a scare recently. We took Bryce in for his monthly follow-up with the GI doctor a couple of weeks ago. While we were there, the GI nurse noticed Bryce tilting his head (she called it lilting), putting ear to shoulder. She called me the next day and asked me if I had noticed him doing this. I hadn’t, so she asked me to keep an eye on him and see if I noticed it. She told me that worse case, it could be a sign of a tumor!
She said the ptosis and vomiting can also be signs of a tumor, so we need to careful. The next few days Josh and I noticed Bryce tilting his head –ear to shoulder on the left side several times, so I called the GI nurse back and left a message. Meanwhile, I e-mailed our regular doctor, and I mentioned it to the geneticist when she called. They both sounded doubtful that it was a tumor. A few (long) days later, the GI nurse called back and told us to have Bryce’s ears checked and if they were clear to go ahead and have an MRI. So we took Bryce in to have his ears checked, and he DID have an ear infection! He’d been fussy, but we had though it was teething. I think his ear just never totally cleared up from the infection he had last month. Anyway, he’s on antibiotics now, so I’m going to keep an eye on him once it clears up and see if I notice the head tilt anymore. I really don’t feel like it’s a tumor. I do want to be careful about it though.Bryce is also cutting four molars!!!!
So this has been a real fun week for us.
Let’s see. Bryce has been working with an occupational/feeding therapist and a nurse from EI, and he just recently added in PT. He’s quite behind developmentally, but he is progressing, so that’s good. He can sit up really well and can be on hands and knees, but has yet learned to trasition between everything yet, and still cannot crawl. The PT says he’s really strong though, & close to crawling. Last week he was evaluated by a speech therapist and qualified for speech therapy too. He was at about a 9 month level speech wise.
The reflux has not improved. He still spits up a lot every day despite the Erythromycin. It helps enough that he can gain weight well though. Bryce is still mostly tube fed. He’s taking 30 cal breastmilk now, since he turned one. He’ll take about 1 to 2 oz by spoon is all. Recently we started trying a sippy cup and finall found one he likes. He doesn’t suck at all, so he needed one that will let the milk out with biting only, but doesn’t come out too fast. We also offer solids every day. He takes a few small bites before gagging & spitting up (and sometimes we even avoid that!). The only thing is, he doesn’t want ME to feed him, so I have to let him put the spoon in his mouth himself. Problem is, he doesn’t quite have the dexterity to do it very well yet.
He likes munching on teething biscuits, which is a plus, as long as he doesn’t get a little crumb off that he gags on. So I’m still pumping away.
I actually started decreasing my pumping because we have a freezer full of milk, but I got a call a few days ago from a woman in our church who’s daughter is losing her milk supply, and her baby can’t tolerate formula (I didn’t get the whole story). Anyway, I’m now trying to increase my supply back up and have been donating breastmilk to this little baby (who is also a gerdling). I gave the grandma this website, but I don’t know if she gave it to her daughter. Sorry that was off subject..
And last, Bryce supposedly had a slight hearing loss when we tested him when he was a newborn. They were unsure if it was related to ear fluid, and wanted to have him re-tested in a year after his cleft palate was fixed, etc. So we have this appointment on Monday to re-test.
Phew! Thanks to anyone who made it through that novel! It felt good to write it all out though. My head has been spinning with everything these past couple weeks.

InactiveAwww….he sure is cute! Thanks for the update. It sounds like he has some great people working with him and he’s making progress, so that’s wonderful. I’m sorry to hear that he has a genetic disorder.
But I guess it’s better to know so you can get him all the help he needs. I hope he continues to make progess and that he just wows you with what he can do in a few months! He’s quite a trooper; and so are you….still pumping and now pumping for another baby. Wow! I don’t know how you do it! God bless you for being for being such a wonderful mommy and for caring so much for someone else’s little one.

InactiveThanks for the update. I hope that putting a label to things helps him to get the right therapy. It sounds like you have a great team of professionals working with you and that he’s making great gains.
I really think you are a saint in many ways… to have three busy kids, and then to pump and donate your BM. Pumping is hard enough, I was so happy when I could stop.
HUGS.

thanks for sharing this with us. I hope that knowing the source of his issues makes treatment more efficient. I am glad to hear that he is making progress.
I am glad that you are getting PT and Speech… as you know, Matthew only started transitioning a couple of months ago, at the end of November so he was a bit older than Bryce is… so i am praying he just surprises you any day now!!

InactiveHeather,
OMG! You have gone through all of that the last few days? Talk about system over load! I’m glad you finally got a diagnosis! So what exactly is Kabuki Syndrome, what does it effect? I’m glad to hear it was his ears, he had that horrible infection around Christmas which you are right that it never fully resolved! Hopefully once that resolves he will eat better! What sippy cup are you using? We haven’t found one that Taylor likes yet.
You are so great to donate you breastmilk to another baby! Too bad I don’t live closer, I’m sure Taylor would have done wonderful on breast milk vs. all the formulas we have tried!!! Anyways, always love to hear the updates!

InactiveHeather,
You are an inspiration to me. I am so glad that I have had the opportunity to hear your story and get to know your little one is even a small way.

InactiveThanks guys.
Thais – yes, I think (hope) Bryce is close to learning transitions. I’m really thankful that we could start the PT. I really think that will help. So is Matthew crawling? or walking? Sorry, I can’t remember if you told me…
As for the breastmilk pumping, honestly, pumping has become a kind of respite for me. It’s my chance to sit down & rest for a bit.
So I don’t mind the extra pumping much. And yes, Sue – I wish I could have helped you out breastmilk wise too!
Oh, and the sippy cup he’s been trying is called the Nuby Sport Sipper. It has a soft silicone mouthpiece, so he can get the milk out really easily, but it doesn’t pour out. I’m hoping this will do the trick. Bryce’sMom2007-2-4 1:41:4

InactiveThanks Heather,
Alexis loves the Nuby Sports Sipper, but she has a knack of biting off the end, I think she just does this to get a new one!! She loves the different colors! I have a supply of them due to the above. I’ll have to try one on Taylor! Hope you have a great weekend!

InactiveHeather,
I am sorry to hear that Bryce does have this genetic disorder, but I am glad that you guys are finally getting answers. And it seems like you are working with some great specialist to get Bryce up and running before you know it!
What an inspirational story you tell about donating your breastmilk. You are an amazing woman!!!!
Keep us posted. You are in my prayers.

Matthew walks and now uses his hands/arms to transition from sitting to standing etc. He is almost crawling – not because we want him to crawl but the PT i kind of forcing him because if there is something under a table for example, he has a hard time getting it as he does not know how to crawl under… and they are getting him to start using his legs more (ie going up small steps, getting into kneeling position from standing which he does not do yet, getting him to get up with his legs ie one knee and leg pushing)… we have a long journey ahead of us but he is makinig progress.
For transitioning, we did a lot of ball time and i did a lot of kneeling time with him. let me know if you want more info!

InactiveSue- LOL!
That’s so funny that Alexis bites the end off her sippy cups! It’s that destructive 2-year old stage again!
Thais – Wow! It sounds like Matthews doing really well!! I would love to hear more tips for teaching transitions, if you don’t mind. We’ve been doing kneeling and hands & knees with Bryce. We’ve also been doing what the PT calls side-sitting. He sits on the floor and we put a toy out to the side and try to get him to lean on one hand while reaching across with the other, then pulling him all the way across to his tummy so he can learn to get from sitting to tummy or crawling position. That’s all she’s taught us so far.
