InactiveWe learned about a month ago that we have been dosing Prevacid incorrectly for over a year. We were giving it to DD just before nursing (morning and night) rather than 15-30 min (or longer) before a meal.
So my question now is, knowing the mechanism of action for PPIs, is it better to dose it wrong or skip the dose? Under our new dosing schedule, for her evening dose, I dose her as soon as I pick her up (5:00) and she then eats dinner with the family at 5:45. However, there are days when I am later than normal picking up my kids from daycare and DD ends up getting a snack at 5:30, and dinner is not until 6:00 or later.
So on those late days, do I go ahead and dose her as soon as I pick her up, knowing it is not on an empty stomach, or do I skip the dose because it is not going to help anyway? Or do I wait and dose her 15-30 before she nurses to sleep at night (dose her at 6:30 for a 7:00 nursing session) even though she has eaten dinner only 30 min before?
Thoughts anyone?

InactiveI would think that it is better to dose wrong than not at all. less effective is better than no effective. Is there anyway to give the medicine to your day care with instructions that if it is 5:00 and you aren’t there, they are to give it to her? Just a thought.

InactiveCan she go without that snack? If so then you can give her the dose when you get there and feed her when you get home even on the later nights.

Inactiveor i would do it possibly in the morning? or if you do morning already.. than i would have the people at daycare give it to her maybe right before her snack even?

InactiveIt would be best to go ahead and give it. Remember there was a time we didn’t know about timing so I think I would give it to her regardless of a snack or not.

InactiveI feel a little naughty every time i post this
.I always give Alana her Zoton “incorrectly”. Almost always she gets it immediately before a feed. Despite this it makes a huge difference. I wondered if it would make more of a diff to wait the 1/2 hours so I tried it for a few days once…well she was still the same (other than all the screaming she did waiting for her feed
). So I just went back to immediately before. In saying this, maybe if I actually gave did it “correctly” she could go on a lower dose. But it has just never worked that I can arrange the 1/2 hr- she wakes starving and feeds so frequently that it doesn’t ever fit in on an “empty stomach”. I have tried sneaking it in before she wakes up- but it just makes her wake up 1/2 hours early!!So I guess giving it wrong is better than not at all- but for most bubs it is better to give it “correctly” to get the max benefit.
In no way to I advocate the no wait thing- I agree with others that the marci-kids stuff is very credible and I am certainly no expert
. But this is just what worked for all of us- Alana and me and our lifestyle- so we have been lucky. -
