InactiveMy son is 12 weeks old and about 11 pounds. He has reflux and pyloric spasms. He spits up a crazy amount!! He probably spits up about 30-40 times per day. SOMEhow he is still gaining weight pretty well, but it still seems like a problem. First of all, he is always coughing and choking on it, and I am scared because he sometimes spits up in his sleep (he sleeps elevated on a wedge). He recently started Prevacid, which does not seem to be doing its job in making him more comfortable (that’s another issue). But I really would like to see the excessive spitting decreased. Is there anything I can do? I breast feed about 60% and give him Alimentum thickened with rice cereal the other 30% of the time (had to supplement because he was not gaining well at first). Also, does 30-40 times per day just seem insane? I have not heard of other people reporting this much spitting up!
Any suggestions would be appreciated, as my doctor is clueless (and we are waiting to try to get in to see a GI specialist).

Inactiverecently shane has been spitting up insane amounts as well…like sometimes its 10 times after one feeding. but other times its only 2 times after one feeding. i was wondering how much is normal as well.. or should we say the other moms are experiencing as well.

InactiveWhat a great smile! I love the picture! He’s so cute.

I wonder if a motility drug would help him. Have you asked his doctor about that? I’d probably ask to try Erythromycin since it doesn’t have the scary potential side effects of Reglan. He may have DGE as well as reflux. Many reflux babies (including mine) do.

Inactivendrose: Thanks
I actually had him on the Reglan for a very short time before taking him off it because of the side effects. My doctor didn’t warn me about them! But maybe I will ask about the Erythromycin. Does tons of spitting up tend to indicate DGE? I feel so clueless about a lot of this!February 20, 2007 at 11:53 am #25333Anonymous
InactiveDGE can contribute to it because when digestion is slow the stomach empties so slowly that it’s always somewhat full, so combined with reflux and in Grady’s case the pyloric spasms, I think it would be the perfect recipe for lots of spitting.

InactiveBryce is on Erythromycin for his DGE, and it reduced his spitting up dramatically. I definitely think it would be worth asking your doctor to try it.
