InactiveHi,
my son is 4 years old. As a baby he used to spit up a lot (I mean A lot)… We told his doctor, but he wasn’t concerned because he was gaining weight and wasn’t fussing. Which was true. Why would I be giving my son medicine if he is not in pain. It made sense.
But, then things started changing, when he hit 2 years of age. He was very sensitive to smells and that would make him vomit. This continued and it didn’t seem that horrible, because I knew that I needed to avoid places that have strong smells (like restaurants). Any unpleasant smell would make him vomit. But, his vomiting increased this last Christmas. It would be pretty much every day. Interesting enough, after he vomits he feels so much better. And he goes on playing like there is nothing to it.
Last week it was even worse, he would do it twice a day, wouldn’t let me zip up his jacket all the way, because it bothered him, wouldn’t let me put his shirt on after eating…. Things like that. And, he even told me that his throat is burning. That was the turning point. I called the doctor and he saw us the same day. He gave him Zantac 15 mg/ml, and he takes 3 ml in each dose, twice a day (6ml/day). For the first 5 days it seemed that it was working. He wasn’t vomiting, he was verry happy. On the 6th day he vomited and it continued every day since. We called the doctor’s office yesterday, no response yet. I don’t know what to do. I feel so bad for him, I can only imagine how he feels. Please help – if you have any input.February 21, 2007 at 9:00 am #25392Anonymous
InactiveWell remember that Zantac doesn’t stop the throwing up just the pain. Overall I find that Zantac works for a few days and then seems to just stop working. My son is 20 months old and his reflux seems to be very bad some days and nonexistent other days. It may be that he needs a ppi like prevacid (Isaac is going back on protonix now b/c zantac is ineffective again). With all of that being said I am sorry that he is not doing so well and I hope that the dr figures out something to help him feel better.
Oh and you might want to think about a ped GI as they are very helpful to us!

InactiveTHank you so much.
I didn’t realize that it only stops the pain. He never complained about the pain, only burning in his throat and vomiting. Vomiting is the only thing that scares me the most. He is loosing weight. Dr put him on Prevacid originally – but insurance wouldn’t cover it. So you think Prevacid would help? Even vomiting part?February 21, 2007 at 9:55 am #25401Anonymous
InactiveGenerally PPI’s do not help with vomitting, but some moms have seen a reduction in vomitting with them. If he’s suffering from acid reflux he’s probably pretty uncomfortable all the time from that acid backing up into his esophagus and throat. It sounds like at least some of his vomitting may be related more to his discomfort than to spontaneous reflux events; like when he throws up due to odors. I think it would be worth a try to see if Prevacid would give him more relief and therefore may reduce some of the vomitting because he’s more comfortable and maybe will not react to odors or other triggers as much as he does now.
We also did not have any luck with Zantac. It would work for a few days, we’d raise the dose, it would work for a few days, etc. and eventually my daughter just didn’t get any relief from it.
If you want to try Prevacid you may want to read up on the current research into dosing for infants and toddlers since many doctors underdose. http://www.marci-kids.com
Good luck. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon.

InactiveThank you Christine.
I guess if his acid reflux is controlled, then he will not vomit.February 21, 2007 at 12:26 pm #25426Anonymous
InactiveWell, I think he might vomit less…

InactiveI just came back from the doctor’s office and he gave me a 2 week supply of PREVACID 15 mg (lansoprazole) delayd release capsules. He said to get the granules from the capsules and mix it with the apple juice, once a day. So I hope it works. Thank you.

InactiveWe are having a hard time affording Isaac’s protonix (like prevacid and our insurance won’t cover it) and “Help me grow” in our area found a grant that we were eligible for that pays for the medicine. Maybe there is something in your area like that?! Oh and we are not eligible for medicaid so that is not an option here.
I hope the prevacid helps out alot

InactiveMy son’s dr switched him to Prevacid Solu-Tabs 15mg, once daily. This is his 2nd day. ANd I noticed that he could easily be on it twice a day. He takes it in the morning and usually in the evening I notice that he starts having a discomfort. Maybe I should check the doctor or of any of you have any experience, let me know.
He did vomit today, once. But he was drinking a lot of juice. It wasn’t so bad. We will see. I am afraid to say anything.

InactiveI was just checking this website that Christine gave me. They are saying that he could safely take 22.5 mg/day. 7.5mg x 3 times .
This sounds a lot better. Maybe I should try and cut the tablets in half and just give one half in the morning and one in the evening. Still he would get the prescribed dossage of 15 mg. And I can check with his dr if I can add 7.5 mg to his daily dosage.

InactiveDoctors generally do underdose since they are not aware of the current research. I was able to convince Myles’ doctor by printing and faxing the marci-kids information to her. Maybe that would help you get him on a higher dose as well.
If not you maybe try Pepcid Complete at bedtime. It’s a chewable tablet so it would be easy for your son to take and it’s OTC, so easy to get too.
I’ve been using it for my reflux and it works very well. Dr. Phillips at marci-kids says you can give it to infants and toddlers, but I don’t remember the details about dosing. Maybe you can email him and ask him how much and how often. Here’s his email address phillipsjo@health.missouri.eduGood luck and please keep us posted.

InactiveChristine,
I have e-mailed the doctor and I will see what he says.
I have also called Noah’s dr. and suggested does increase, but take it 3x daily, 7.5 mg = total of 22.5 mg/day. SO, I will see what he says.February 23, 2007 at 12:06 pm #25634Anonymous
InactiveI have heard from Noah’s dr. He still wants him to stay on 15 mg/day. Splitting the tablet is OK. He still doesn’t think that will make a difference. He said that it is too soon to say anything yet. Wait for a week.
Dr.Phillips said that he would be even OK to take 30mg/day.
I guess I will wait until next week. We are seeing a GI specialist on Thursday. He will probably be able to give us more specific directions.
Thank you for all of your support, everyone.
THis website is such a great idea. Moms sometimes feel that they have no place to turn.February 23, 2007 at 12:45 pm #25639Anonymous
InactiveGood luck with your GI appointment. I hope Noah is feeling better soon.

InactiveIt’s Monday and Noah has been on Prevacid 15 mg/day since (I believe) Tuesday or Wednesday evening. He is a lot better and much happier. He used to be so tired and not in a good mood. You couldn’t even put his shirt over his head (he would vomit). Just wanted to give an update. His appetite is back and he is even asking for food. We are still seeing a specialist on Thursday. THank you all for support.
