InactiveHi ladies, thank you for reading; any input will be apprecciated.
Iam sorry is kind of long..I took Kendra to the ped last Monday beacuse she was running a low grade fever and was so whining as in pain. I was concerned. Turned out she got an ear infection! Just to add to the reflux problem. Any ways the ped suggested to give Alimentum a try. She also increased her prevacid does from 7.5 mg to 15 mg to give divided in two doses. She also increased her zantac dose from .9ml to 1.2 ml until the prevacid kicks in and she is on amoxicillin for her ear infection!
We started her on the alimentumRTF on Monday 1/2 ounce mix with her breastmilk and are now to 1 ounce per feeding. Her spit up decreased to one or two (from 10-15 a day) a day in 24 hours and i was very excited. she is taking about 5-6 ounces mix in her BM, however she is having two-3 very loose BMs a day is a bit gassy and she seems more sleepy than normal. The sleepy concerns me a lot; I can’t really tell if it is the formula, the increase in prevacid or zantac or the amoxicillin! i researched the formula side effects and it says may cause diahrea (sp?), tireness/weakness. Could it be the formula? she spit up her dose of prevacid this morning and it came up with something pink in it (she did this three hours after i have given her meds and again the same stuff three hour later). I do think the pink stuff might have been the amoxicillin, since iam giving then about 15 to 20 minutes apart. I would call teh ped offic eif i have to, i really don’t want to sound stupid. This is my first time doing formula, so i feel a little inexperience. Also could this mean she won’t be able to tolerate it once she is taking more? Also the ped think she got a Milk protein allergy. I started the TED diet yesterday and i hope it will help her, since i am not ready to give up her breast milk. I am just trying to help her out and i just don’t seem to get it right at 6 months and counting. I feel as iam failing her sometimes, i keep researching and trying this and that and just nothing seems to work. She still refusing her bottles and all i can do is just try and try and try..
Thanks for making this far.__________________February 22, 2007 at 4:25 pm #25558Anonymous
Inactivethats great that you got a ped to help you! mine was useless. but hopefully the alimentum will really help.. also i learned the antibiotic can make reflux worse.. so just hang in there until its over. and the pink can be from the prevacid as well. and maybe she is just sleepy because she is feeling a little better?

InactiveThere have been quite a few posts about purple or pink spit up with Prevacid. Joel (who used to work for marci-kids) says it turns pink or purple when it is degraded in the stomach, so make sure you are giving it on an empty stomach and following it up with a meal 30 minutes later. But, you’re right…it could have been the amoxicillin.
I wouldn’t worry about her sleepiness. My three are often sleepy when they are fighting an infection, and she may be feelign better (reflux wise) so she can rest more easily when she needs to.
I don’t know too much about Alimentum, but I’ve seen a number of posts from moms who say it causes loose stools in their babies. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about as long as it’s not actual diarrhea.
You are definitely not failing her. I had the same horrible feelings when my babies would not eat, but you’re doing everything you possibly can. Hopefully the increase in Prevacid and Zantac will turn things around and she’ll start eating better.
Good luck. I hope her ear infection clears up soon.

InactiveChristine,
thank you soooo much for your encoruaging reply. I got teary eyes from reading it. Iam sorry you have been in this situation before. You are a very brave mom. I don’t feel so brave sometimes.
Kendra broke out a rash on her face, is sneezing and coughing a lot and it doesn’t seem like a cold. I feel like iam piosoning her evreytime is bottle time. She is hurting and uncomforatable and all my efferts don’t make a different. It’s so fustrating sometimes. I think the alimentum is to blain. A mom told me the powder might be better for her. i’ll try that next i guess.
I wanted to get the mylanta/maalox from the drug store, but they don’t have the infant one at this particular store. She really needs some relief until this med kicks in. Kendra is 14 pounds, what will be the dose from this meds for her?
just pondering here. thanks
Leo

InactiveHi Leo,
You’re welcome. I remember those difficult days all too well so I always feel for new moms who are going through it.
I don’t think they make infant mylanta or maalox. Most of us use Mylanta Cherry Supreme (the adult version) because it has no aluminum. At 16 lbs I was giving Myles 2 – 2.5 mls. I’d try 1 – 1.5 mls with her first and work up from there if that doesn’t seem to help. Too much will cause loose stools, but it’s a safe drug.
When did the rash start? Is it only on her face? I’d mention it to the doctor if she just started an antibiotic just in case it’s an allergy. I think it’s usually all over the body when it’s related to an antibiotic reaction, but I’m not sure.
It could also be the Alimentum. My three all got eczema on their faces from milk in the first 6-9 months of life. They all outgrew it with time, but I had to avoid dairy while nursing and I supplemented with soy. I’d talk to her doctor before you make any changes though.
Hang in there. You’ll put all the pieces together soon enough and things will get easier.

InactiveMy ped. gastroenterologist told me that Alimentum might loosen stools. My son is constipated all the time and needs lots of help to go. I’m breast feeding but giving Alimentum approx. 5x a week (almost 1 bottle a day) and it appears to have helped. He used to go every 5-6 days and now it’s every other day. So, the loose stool could be from the Alimentum. As others said, as long as it’s just loose, not water! Good luck.
