InactiveHi All,
Dagney’s been doing well for the most part on the Neocate DHA/ARA, however we got the latest shipment of her formula on Friday, and the Apria wharehouse was out of it, so they sent the regular Neocate without DHA/ARA. Now I’m trying to figure out if some of her recent behavior is from that or teething or cold or virus or…you name it!
She cut her first tooth 1 week ago, and the other one should be coming in any time now. For the last 1 1/2 weeks she’s cut back a lot on how much she’s eating, by about 10 ounces/day. She had gotten up to eating about 32 ounces/day before this. She was cranky for the first 5-6 days, but isn’t so much any more. She is arching again, which I’ve noticed, but it seems more pronounced (that’s the only way I can describe it, she pushes off with her feet now rather than just wiggle around like before, but she’s also bigger now too…), and we heard all kinds of gurgling/growling in her belly yesterday. Her last 2 bm’s are a diahrea-looking consistency, not the really horrible dark green Neocate poop, more of a foul smelling pea soup. She’s also spitting up more again, and had huge “power pukes” as we call them (projectile vomiting out mouth & nose) 1-2 times/day since Saturday. (Normally that will happen about once/week or so).
I know I’ve posted all this already in someone else’s thread about teething, but could this be from having the neocate without the dha/ara? I’ve been trying to mix them together, giving bottles of 1/2 with and 1/2 without, but I only have 2 more cans with, and the rest is without, so I won’t be able to do that for much longer. I was thinking it was most likely teething, or possibly a bug, but could the formula possibly be hurting her?
Thanks in advance!

Inactiveif anything, it would be the cans WITH the dha/ara that bothered her. that stuff is chemically engineered and known to bother babies tummy. i get my son neocate without dha/ara, always.

InactiveThanks, Natalia! It must just be the teething or a little bug. She’s generally happy the rest of the time, which is good, but she gets upset now when she throws up like that, which is heartbreaking to see. She used to not really care, but I’m sure as they get older it bothers them the more aware of things they are! I have to make sure not to freak out either, as I’m sure that doesn’t help!
Maybe I’ll just try her without the dha/ara, and see how she does with that. I wanted her to have it with it because they say it helps vision and brain development, and my vision is SO bad, I wanted her to have a chance to maybe not need glasses!!

Inactivemy son isnt on neocate, but he does WORSE on the formulas that have the dha/ara in them! but i guess anything is possible? maybe she is just used to it, i am not sure? but more i really think it could be teething.. it is known to make their reflux flair up.. and since she already has cut a tooth the other one isnt probably far behind

ohh natalia you just reminded me of the flaxseed oil.. i havnt done it in weeks!oops. but i would warn both of you that we give shane cod liver oil and flax oil for the dha and both have caused him to spit up a bit more afterwards. i am guessing because of the oil and sometimes it causes me to regurgitate is as well! hopefully you wont have the same experience.. i just cut back on how much i was giving him and he does o.k.

InactiveDenise,
It sounds like a bug to me. Foul smelling diarrhea along with “power pukes” is a sure sign of a stomach bug. My guess is that the original irritability was due to teething and now she’s got a virus, and is probably still teething some since most baby teeth do come in pairs.
I doubt it’s the Neocate w/o dha/ara. The other possibilty is reflux pain, but that seems unlikely to me since she also has diarrhea…. Hopefully it will pass soon.

InactiveIn relation to the bug…I found when Alana had it she was a bit miserable…few bottle refusals, a bit of spit up and a bit of foul smelling diarrhea…but it didn’t progress to something really full on. So it is possible she has a bug but not a really kick you in the guts kind of one

InactiveThat’s what I’m thinking a little bug…she woke up at 2 am upset, I was getting her settled down, and then i heard her tummy really grumbling, and she pooped again. Poor little girl. I don’t know if I should give Pedialite, when do you all start that, and how much do you give?

InactiveI usually keep it on hand just in case and start giving a little bit right away if they have diarrhea or vomitting. How much I’d give would depend on how much they are still eating or drinking. If they are not yet dehydrated and taking in enough to wet diapers, I just give them an ounce or two a few times a day…if they will drink it. If they are at the point where they are not eating or drinking their formula and seem to be headed towards dehydration, then I just give them as much as they will take.
You could maybe mix her Neocate with a few ounces of water and one or two ounces of plain Pedialyte. I used to do that with Myles.
How is she doing? Is she drinking enough formula to stay hydrated?

InactiveShe is still hydrated, she’s drinking still a decent amount, but she’s been at a reduced intake for almost 2 weeks now because of the teething and now this bug. She’s been sleeping for the last 2 hours, which isn’t like her either (she’d been a 1/2 hour-napper, but started to take longer naps in the last week or so, but never this long!), so maybe I will add a little plain Pedialyte to her next bottle. Would you put the Pedialyte in place of an ounce or 2 of water with the Neocate? I’ll have to try that.

InactiveYes, that’s what I did with Myles. I’d make his bottle with 4 ounces of water and 2 ounces of Pedialyte.
Myles slept a lot when he had rotavirus. These stomach bugs can really wear you down.
I hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveHope she’s feeling better soon and that she takes the pedialyte. I can’t get my kids to drink it.
I’ve heard that the gerber liquilytes (which we don’t have here) taste a bit better.
