InactiveWe had a sleep study/ph probe done on Dylan. He was over 2 at the time and we had already had his adenoids out. He was just such a restless sleeper and he would get up at 3 or 4 am for the day and not go back to bed until like 7:30 the next evening. We were exhausted! Anyway, the sleep study was pretty hard to watch the set up of it because they had to paste tons of probes on the head and then they also had to drop the ph probe down as well, so it was a pretty rough set up, but once it was done, he was OK. Only one parent could stay, so of course, it was me. It ended up showing 7 – 12 respiratory arousals an hour so Dylan was never falling into deep sleep and after being like that for so many hours at 3 or 4 am he would just give up and be up for the day. So, we went and took out the tonsils and because we had gotten the adenoids out before age 2, then some grew back, so we had that taken out as well. The sleep did improve some, but Dylan is still somewhat a restless sleeper.
Just this week we bought him one of those blow up bouncer toys and put it in the basement. With the cold weather, Dylan is not outside as much as he needs to be. After going nuts in the thing for hours, he has slept so sound and great since.
So, what do I think after this long winded reply?(sorry)
I would first try to do LOTS of activities during the day like moving and standing, and playing and bouncing, etc….. and see if tiring him out works and maybe limit his naps during the day. (I can’t remember how much Justice naps at this point). That is the least invasive trial thing you can do. If I didn’t see improvement, I would probably ask for a PH probe as it is not that invasive and then you could at least rule out reflux as the cause?
Only then I would have the sleep study done, but Justice is so young that I don’t think that any ENT would want to take the tonsils or adenoids out that young even if they are interrupting his sleep. I am not sure, though, so it is worth the visit to the ENT, but he is so young…..
Let us know what you decide…

InactiveWe’re going to get this done for Hailey. She’s just too restless of a sleeper.

InactiveQuinn’s mother (myQTpie) had a sleep study done, I think. She posted pictures of it recently. Maybe you could try and PM her? Also, I would have to agree with the PH probe. I know you said that even on meds Justice wasn’t a great sleeper, but the human pacifier thing, that was Brianna exactly. But you know, and I am not sure where you are with this, but Brianna’s sleep didn’t get really better until I eliminated ALL dairy and soy from my diet. I know you had talked about TED, but I don’t remember what you ever found so sorry if you have already ruled dairy out.
Unless you want to try some type of sleep training, if you are sure it is not pain. Brianna never seemed in pain per say, but she just had a hard time sleeping. Good luck!

InactiveOMG, Shelby, you’re describing Ariella. She also tosses and turns and such a noisy sleeper. Since she sleeps with us in the same bedroom, we barely get any sleep b/c of her tossing and turning, and sometimes crying. I have to look into the study you’re talking about.

InactiveIt drives me crazy. Everyone I know who has a baby has no problems getting their baby to go to sleep and stay asleep. Even when I have asked the ped. about it she says it is odd. He should be sleeping better at this age. Gee thanks doc. I’ve even had the ped tell me that if the sleeping doesn’t get better to bring him back. I don’t know what she thinks she’s going to do about it, but I think I am going to take him in and see what she says. I know this probably sounds silly, but I feel like a failure. Even my first son had a hard time staying asleep. I did eventually out of desperation let him cio. I am trying so hard to not do that this time though. I’m not completly exausted like I was with Luke. I am just really aggrivated. I keep thinking with age it will get better, but it hasn’t yet. Oh, I can’t remember who asked me about the diet, but I did do it for two weeks and it didn’t make a difference. However taking him off his zegeird did make a difference for a few days.

InactiveShelby…you are not a failure. There are lots of bubs out there who have lots of trouble sleeping..reflux or no reflux. There are lots of lunchtime conversations at work by mums who are up all night with their bubs. That being said I can understand why you would like to get to the bottom of it and everyone has made some great suggestions. The only other thing I can think about is sleep school…I know you have tried some of the “sleep techniques” but it is hard work without some support. I’m definately not saying it is something you have done…just that maybe there is someone there who can help in some way. Given all they see is babies that have difficulty sleeping…they may have seen someone like Justice and give you some idea about whether or not sleep training worked??? BTW my neice went to sleep school a couple of times (she was a similar age to Justince) and it seemed to help a lot. I guess at least it could rule something out….I ramble..but Shelby…please don’t think you are a failure…your two little boys clearly hvae a mum who loves them very much.

InactiveI’ve never heard of sleep school! I wonder if they have it here. What is that?

InactiveSleep school? This must be an Australian concept.
We need to bring sleep school to the US!Shelby,
When I was a nanny I saw lots of babies who were poor sleepers. It’s really not that uncommon. Babies are not born knowing how to self soothe and stay asleep. It comes more easily for some babies (like your friend’s babies) but most need to be sleep trained in some form or another.

InactiveOh yes… and, Shelby, don’t feel bad. We’re 21 months into this, and Hailey still doesn’t sleep. I also used to think it would get better with age (I’m still hopeful for this), but now we’re looking into other options. Good luck.

InactiveWow-atleast I know I am now alone! Although my son is only 2.5 months old, he is a horrible sleeper. I am so exhausted and depressed because all his movements at night seem so abnormal. He moves his head from side to side and toss’ and turns all night long. For naps he pretty much does the same thing if he gets a nap at all. He ALWAYS seems like he is in a light sleep and when he isn’t moving, he sometimes moves his hands. Sleep is all I think about, all I worry about and all I desire for both him and me. He is on 30 mgs of prevacid and sleeps in a stoller. I am trying to get him into his crib because I know he still moves whether he is flat or inclined.
I tried the TED and nothing changed but today I am getting some Neocate from the GI doc to try and see if it will work. She thinks I;m crazy but my son seems so uncomfortable and can’t be getting good sleep. Also, he does seem like he has some gas or intestinal pains the way he moves he lower half of his body sometimes. Also sometimes he will go down for a nap (he always falls on alseep on my shoulder because we has to be upright for 30 mins after meals) he wakes up crying after like 20-30 mins-like he is in pain.
I have videotaped him and his doctor doesn’t believe it is neurological although some days I don’t know. He is a VERY active baby and can’t seem to sit still-some days I wonder if he has ADHD already-but anyway I already have him in his exersaucer so he can burn some energy in the hopes of tiring him out but he always gets the hiccups from bouncing around.
Lastly, I currently pump all my milk and feed him via bottles because he eats to fast and to much from the breast and tends to spit up and have more gas. With the bottle he is so much calmer when he eats, although he hates burping after each ounce but the bottle has also helped him to stop feeling the need to poop everytime he ate which he did on the breast. Although his poops are always different color but mostly green and in my opinion mucousy although the GI doc said they are fine and tests them all the time for blood to indicate an allergy. I believe deep down that Jack does not have a dairy allergy but may be dairy intolerant which is way we see green poops with mucous but that is my onw conclusion and the doctor doesn’t seem to agree.
I hate this guessing game and just dread the next 9 months of my childs life. I pray for a resolution soon because I am very sad!

InactiveShelby,
Have you considered alternative medicine and/or seeing a chiropractor (a few of us have on the forums)? Would your docs do an endoscopy or ph probe test? I feel like these are logical next steps. i have taken Lucas to our family chiropractor a few times and each time he sleeps better after visiting her. Once he slept for 7 hours in a row that very night– it was the only thing where we’ve had such an immedidiate and dramatic result from something. Just something to consider. Like the diet, I feel like if you’re desperate enough, things like this are worth a try. Testing obviously in our case was very useful, and I would recommend if things don’t get better that you look into it. It’s the only way to truly know what’s happening with the reflux and what the esophagus looks like to rule out reflux as a culprit with the sleep issues.
Please don’t think you are a bad mom because he doesn’t sleep. If that was true, then nearly every mom on this FORUM is a bad mom and that’s impossible, right?
I’m sure you wouldn’t accuse the rest of us for being bad moms because our kids didn’t sleep…like Lori and myself, (until after age two for Lucas and we’re still waiting on Miss Hailey to begin sleeping so her mother can recover)! So take it easy on yourself….March 1, 2007 at 10:17 pm #26312Anonymous
InactiveSleep school is literally that…you and bub go to school and someone looks at sleeping and offers suggestions etc….kind of like a lactation consultant but they look at sleep not breastfeeding.
Another reason for you all to come and live with me

Shelby… I agree totally with Anne…its time for you to take it easy on yourself. I only know you through these posts but I think you are one of the hardest working and thoughtful mums I have talked to. You are doing a great job…

InactiveYou are always so sweet Therese. Thank you all. I don’t know what happened, but I never got notice that anyone replied to my post.
First, sleep school sounds great. I don’t think we have that here, but I am going to look it up and make sure.
We do take the boys to a chiropractor and I agree it is amazing. Recently Justice was waking every 15 min, we took him and that night he slept so well.
I feel like a failure because when I talk to other people about the sleep problems they look at me like I’m doing something wrong and say, huh. I only have one friend whose babies don’t sleep well either. Everyone else I know just doesn’t get it. One friend I just talked to has a 5 wk old baby and she said the baby is waking 3x a night to eat and the baby is just going to have to drop that second feeding.
She has no idea how blessed she is. Well dh just got home and I’m so excited that I can’t think. Thanks again ladies. You are the best friends anyone could ask for. You understand and don’t judge.

InactiveShelby…they are lying
. Its like people who tell you they don’t argue
! Out of my mums group of 9, 1/2 are still waking during the night (admittedly not to feed…but still causing mumma probs
). Also there are a couple of mums at work with 2 yo who are still getting up multiple times (not to depress you
) and these ladies are no failures. I know it can sometimes feel like you are all alone… but we’re here for ya
