InactiveI know I’ve posted about naps on here several times and so have many others. It seems like many of our refluxers stuggle with them, but I do know some of you have great little nappers too, so I need some advice.
My son currently goes down for 2 naps during the day, and I always hope that they will be about 1 1/2 hours or more long, as he is really a PILL! at the end of the day if he doesn’t sleep well. While I usually don’t have problems getting him to sleep (and much of the time, he goes to sleep on his own), he will usually only sleep one of his naps well. Right now it seems like his morning nap works well. I have to wake him to eat. The afternoon, however, almost always ends when he wakes up after 30-45 minutes. I just don’t understand why he can sleep fine one nap – make it through the sleep cycle thing – and he can’t do it the other.
Strange thing is that if he doesn’t sleep, for some reason (like church, etc), his whole morning nap, he will sleep the afternoon. I’ve even considered only letting him sleep 30 minutes in the morning, but I KNOW he needs more sleep than this.
My question is what can I do?? if anything? We have a nap routine; he has a “lovie”, etc. My daughter used to do this as well, and we eventually just let her cry during the rest of her nap. I hate doing this, but I don’t know what else to do.
I’ve tried going in at graduated intervals and just talking to him, tried going in and picking him up for a few minutes, tried rocking him back to sleep, so far, nothing works.. just makes him hopping mad!
Any advice?

InactiveHmmm….one thing that stood out was that he will compensate for a short morning nap with a longer afternoon nap… That says to me that it’s not necessarily any acid breakthrough during that part of the day if he can sleep through it some days? Maybe he’s like a little alarm clock (as Sarah is) and only needs x number of hours of sleep per day. No matter when he is able to get them, he always gets just that amount??? I know that’s not what you want to hear…If you didn’t wake him up every morning to eat, how long would he sleep? What would happen if you let him sleep in the morning until he got up on his own? Sorry I’m not much help…I’m still trying to brainstorm…

InactiveI was wondering too about letting him sleep as long as he wanted to in the morning. Some of the sleep experts say that an overtired baby will sleep less, not more. So it’s possible that waking him from his morning nap is making him overtired so that he can’t sleep well during his afternoon nap.
I know you said that when he misses his morning nap like he does at church he sleeps better in the afternoon, but my experience with my own babies is that it usually only works ocassionally.
I think it was Dr. Weissbluth who says “sleep begets sleep”, meaning the more a baby sleeps and the more well rested a baby is, the more he will sleep.

InactiveI agree with the “sleep begets sleep.” When he does nap well, he sleeps better at night, eats better, it’s all better!
I guess I’ll try letting him sleep in the morning for as long as he wants and see what happens! It’s worth a shot, that’s for sure.

InactiveI would suggest the same, just let him sleep and see what happens. Our little ones are the same age, so maybe he’ll be getting into a better routine soon?? I was really getting worried about naps, and just in the last week or 2 Dagney’s started taking 2 decent naps each day!! The am nap is usually now 1 1/2 hours, or maybe even 2 hours long, and the afternoon nap is about 1- 1 1/4 hours long. She also takes about a 1/2 hour nap around 5ish, then goes down for the night around 7:30-7:45. There have been a couple of times here and there where she still only sleeps 1/2 hour, but the longer naps have kind of become the norm!! YAAAY!!

InactiveAlana sleeps 3 x 45 min naps per day. I wondered if this was because she would wake at the end of her sleep cycle and not get back to sleep…but then she doesn’t do that at night and she wakes smiley and happy.
But…on the days she gets a nap for about 1 hr, the next ones are only 30-40mints. On the days she misses one nap (eg we are out and about and she wants to look and smile at everything instead of sleep
) she might do a 1 1/2hour nap and a 45 min nap. So I think Alana only needs 2 to 2 1/2 hours of nap time a day.Maybe each baby has a daily nap requirement? Like the family mass index (the family always weighs the same…someone loses weight…someone gains weight…

Inactiveshane does the same thing.. usually his morning nap is longer than the afternoon one! and i too think it has to do with how tired they are.. on sundays as well.. he misses his morning nap..and than will take one 2 hr- 3 hr nap when we get home! but sometimes if i take him for a walk and really get him tired .. than in the afternoon he will press through the wake up time and sleep longer.

InactiveJustice used to do the same thing. Now however I can’t put him down at all. He starts to wake even before I put him down. For Justice though it wasn’t a matter of not needing the sleep and it doesn’t sound like it is that for you either. I say that because you say he is a pill if he doesn’t get a good nap. Justice has been quite the pill recently. Grumpy all the time. I don’t have any advice. Just wanted to chime in to say that we are in the same boat and I don’t get it either.

InactiveBrianna was the same way as Shane…morning nap was almost always an hour or more…usually closer to 2, but afternoon was almost always only 30-45 min. It used to make me so sad that she wouldn’t sleep in the PM, becuase then we were putting her down at like 6:30 because she was so tired. I know you don’t want to hear this, but letting her cry one day was what changed this (well, we were also transitioning to one nap). When she woke up before I would try everything…sometimes I could get her to go back to sleep and sometimes not, but I think she got so used to me coming to get her that she never learned how to get back to sleep on her own. Now she is getting to be a great napper (on most days at least). She still wakes up sometimes…and sometimes she will wake up and cry for a few seconds, but within 5 mins she is back to sleep. Don’t think that I am saying you should CIO…it took me until Brianna was a year to be able to try it. Good luck!

InactiveWell, yesterday, I let him sleep in the AM and he woke after 1 1/2 hours anyway and still didn’t sleep the afternoon nap. Today, he woke on his own again at 1 hr. 15 minutes and again is awake in there after 30 minutes. Yesterday and today, I’ve decided to not go in there anymore. After he screamed for a few minutes yesterday, he stopped and just started yelling (you know the difference) and then he stopped altogether and started talking and blowing bubbles.. and then started yelling again and then the bubbles, etc. And he NEVER went back to sleep, even after almost 45 minutes! ARG!!! When I went in to get him, he just looked at me and smiled like, “ha, ha, I win!” Ok, maybe not, but that’s what it felt like at the time.

Today, he didn’t even cry at first, just squirmed around and groaned a little and then started yelling. He’s not in pain, I can tell. He’s just mad I’m not coming to get him. If he could talk, he’d be saying “MOM, come get me. I think I’m done!” I REALLY want him to go back to sleep because I know he does need more sleep.
Ironic thing is that the day I originally posted this, he slept both naps for almost 2 hours! I had to wake him both times!
Wish I could figure it out! He knows how to go back to sleep on his own because he does it fine all night long and in the morning.. oh well. Maybe some day it will just click???
Well, it’s been almost an hour and he’s still awake in there. Has screamed, yelled, talked, blown bubbles, etc. the whole time. Every once and awhile, it will get quiet, and I think “YES”, but then he starts up again. What to do? I guess I need to get him now.

InactiveI think what you’re doing is fine! Part of sleep training is letting the baby learn to be comfortable and content alone in his crib. He seems to be doing that. Right now it’s a novelty to him that he wakes up and you don’t come right away. With time the novelty will wear off and he’ll probably start putting himself back to sleep with a short time of self soothing. It’s a great start that he puts himself back to sleep at night and in the morning. I think the nap thing will fall into place with time.

InactiveHELP! We are on day 5, and still no progress. I’ve been letting him sleep longer in the morning since he isn’t sleeping in the afternoon, and on several days, like today, I can’t get him to go down for his nap. He is currently crying in his room right now (nearly 3) when I tried to originally put him down at around 2! This is so frustrating!!!! I don’t know what to do, and the what makes it doubly hard is that his older sister still takes an afternoon nap… a nap that hasn’t been very peaceful for her the last several days. So, now we have two crabby children to deal with! GRRRR!

InactiveThis is not the advice I would normally give but at around that age I started cutting Myles’ morning nap down (by waking him earlier) and putting him down for a longer nap in the afternoon. My girls still needed an afternoon nap and I was having the same problem as you. Myles would keep them up and then they’d all be miserable. We had a few flukey days with doctor’s appointments or something so his morning nap was cut short and he slept so much better those afternoons, so I decided to try it on regular days at home. It worked pretty well for us but I think it’s a long shot for most babies that young. Maybe worth a try though.

InactiveWell, it is true that he will sleep better in the p.m. if his morning nap is short… at least it’s been that way when we’ve run errands, doctor’s visits, etc. in the mornings. I just hate to do that when I know he isn’t really getting all his sleep. I feel like I’m giving in/up?But, if he’s only going to sleep one good nap, I would rather him sleep in the afternoon than in the morning, as his sister needs her sleep time too. Hmmmm…. I hate to just give up, but I may have to do it this way.
I guess the plus side would be that I could maybe get some stuff done out of the house in the morning???
How long did you let Myles sleep in the morning before waking him?
p.s. I JUST got him down.. finally.. at 3:40 … over an hour and 1/2 after I put him down originally. I think daylight savings is messing him up a bit too.

InactiveUsually I’d let him sleep 45 minutes. When he got older I cut it to 30 minutes. I used to run errands sometimes and he’d snooze in the car, but I had to make sure I wasn’t letting him sleep too much so I sometimes had to cut my errands short.
At home I’d let him fall asleep and then around 30 – 45 minutes later I’d open his door so he’s start to stir. I felt like a bad mom for a while, but it actually worked out really well for us. I had two older children who were at the mercy of Myles’ nap schedule, so once he was more on their schedule they could have a life again, iykwim. And began to take very long afternoon naps which was great for him and for the rest of us. He used to sleep 3 – 3.5 hours!! Now he’s down to 2 – 2.5 hours but that’s because he’s much older and doesn’t need as much sleep.
I’m not a big fan of daylight savings.
I hope he adapts soon. -
