InactiveSarah seems to be able to tolerate dairy in small forms. She does yogurt 2 or 3 times a week with no problems and does OK with hidden dairy.
Tonight we went out to eat with my parents. My dad, being the “grandpa” that he is, thought it would be fun to let her try his ice cream. He gave her no more than 1 tsp. It was 2 tiny bites. She actually made a hilarious face like it was gross (probably b/c it was so cold?) Anyway………………..within an hour or so after coming home she had an incredibly loose stool. I guess I would call it diarrhea? It was her 4th poopy diaper of the day and the others were very formed. Is it possible that the ice cream could have done it to her that quickly? Could only two tiny bites have caused that? I realize anything is possible…just curious!
She also had prunes for breakfast and diluted prune juice for lunch (maybe an ounce) but those have never given her such a looooooose stool before. Hmmmm
Any ideas?

Inactivei”m not sure but it is an interesting question. I would presume not because it takes awhile for food to go through the system????

InactiveHmmm…… I think this is probably going to be one of those trial and error things.
I can tell you that for me when my lactose intolerance first started the effect of eating ice cream was immediate, meaning I quickly learned not eat ice cream unless I was home.
For other dairy products it was usually hours later that I’d have problems. I hope it’s not a dairy issue, but I think only trial and error is going to give you the answer.

InactiveI agree with trial and error. My GI told me when trialing dairy to start with yogurt becuase yogurt has those culture thingies that are found in probiotics and so that would help with the digestion. So maybe yogurt is OK, but icecream isn’t. The only real way to know is to try again. Also, milk in general has given Brianna looser stools (not diarrhea, but still softer than without it), but my Ped said that alone is not a reason not to give dairy. It would need to do a lot more than make the stools loose for it to be a prolbem. (now if what you had was watery, that is a different story).

InactiveWe do sorbet for Kaelyn. It’s not quite the same, but it works for us!

InactiveIce cream will not become a regular part of her diet, it was just a grandpa thing. I don’t want you to think I’ve got the pint of Rocky Road out or anything!
I didn’t even think of frozen yogurt. Her 1st birthday is around the corner…maybe she can have a little of that for a birthday treat.
Thanks!March 20, 2007 at 11:32 pm #28013Anonymous
InactiveYou could probably just freeze a tub of yoghurt that she is able to tolerate (probably can’t make it into a cake though
).I wish I had a pint of rocky road right now…..mmmm all this talk of food is making me hungry.
I guess icecream is simply frozen milk/cream at the least…so there you get a lot all at the one time (versus hidden dairy) and it has no other stuff (like probiotics and enzymes) like yoghurt. So I would guess that it would be more likely to cause a reaction than the other two if the little one is intolerant (I can’t eat icecream without having problems with my bowels…but usually the next day).
