InactiveHi I’m Michelle and a mom to what I’ve been told is a fussy 9 month old who does not sleep. I question my ped abour reflux when my son was 2weeks old. We did a small trial of Zantac and when that did not work well my ped told me it wasn’t reflux. A few months later I changed ped and told her my story. She sent me to a gastro doc who was more interested that my baby was constipated that day (he had just started rice cereal). The gastro doc said well he’s not spitting up so it must not be reflux. The long and short is that my son has not slept for more that 2hours at a time since birth. Many nights he’s up every hour and is crying. So I was sent to a sleep specialist who took the time to ask some great questions and look Logan over. This doctor is convinced that Logan DOES have reflux. Now my question.
The doctor put him on Axid .6ml 2x per day. How long before I see results with this medicine? Have people had good results with this med? I’m also nervous that Logan has been refluxing for 9 months now and the damage that could have been done to him.
Thanks for the help

InactiveHello and welcome,
I’m sorry that I don’t know much about Axid other than that it is an H2 Blocker like Zantac. I’m not sure about dosing, but I think you should see some improvment in a few days if his dose is adequate and if he’s not much better in a week or two I’d talk to the doctor about raising his dose or trying a PPI medication instead. Most of us have not had very good luck with H2 Blockers like Axid, but they do work for some babies so I don’t want to discourage you. Just don’t lose hope if it doesn’t work because there are other meds out there for infant reflux.
If you’re interested you can read more about this at http://www.marci-kids.com
I’m sorry you’ve had such a hard time getting him diagnosed and treated. My second child also never slept due to reflux. She was never properly medicated and she was up every 20 – 60 minutes all night long every night of her life. I was a walking zombie. I sure know how it feels, and I hope he’s feeling better and sleeping better soon.
Be sure to look at Laura’s intro (stickied in the introduce yourself forum). It has lots of valuable information about infant reflux which may help you.
Good luck and glad you found us.

InactiveHi, welcome to the site.
Sorry to hear that you were given the runaround by your docs. Just b/c the zantac didn’t work does not mean that he doesn’t have reflux. It could mean that he needed a different dose, or a stronger med, or a different formula. Does he have any symptoms other than the sleep problems?
We were told for almost 10 months that my daughter screamed and cried b/c she had colic, and that she didn’t sleep b/c of behaviour issues, and that she didn’t eat b/c she was high strung. Anything other than the fact that she had bad reflux. Her sleep sounds a lot like your son’s. What did the sleep specialist do to lead to the conclusion of reflux? Any testing? Can he do a sleep study? That’s what we’re trying to arrange for my daughter.
I would try not to worry too much about having had damage that was done by lack of treatment. The best we can do as parents is to move forward, and really, unless he was having severe complications or other symptoms or eating problems, most damage is reversible.
Can you find another GI? The one you saw doesn’t sound very knowledgeable.
About the axid, we never tried it personally, but I know it’s an acid blocker. If that doesn’t work, you might want to ask about a PPI, it’s a different stronger class of meds.

InactiveWe used Axid and it helped just a little bit. The Prevacid has made Adriana into a completly different baby. I ended up telling my doc. that I wanted to stop the Axid and try Prevacid because of all the help it has been to other kids. It took almost 3 weeks to see the full effects of the Prevacid then boom she was eating and sleeping and no more crying!!!

InactiveThanks everyone for your help.

I have an appointment with my ped on Saturday and hopefully I can find a new gastro doc.
When the sleep doc examined Logan he saw that his tonsils were red and agitated along with his history of poor nursing (he has slowly never nursed well only a few minutes at a time, always pulling and arching, and very agitated), he has gone from the 75% in weight to the 25%, poor sleep habits (continually wakening and crying, not being able to put baby down lying flat and him never going down the first time or second or third, etc…, grimacing in his sleep) and his over all agitation and fussiness. What burns me is that I kept on questioning the docs and they kept telling me he had a long bout of colic.

InactiveThat definitely sounds like reflux. It’s really a shame that no one listened to you all these months.
Good luck with your new ped. I hope he puts him on a PPI and a high enough dose. Please keep us posted. Have you tried Mylanta Cherry Supreme? Many of us use it and it can give some temporary relief. At his age I was giving Myles about 2-2.5 mls 4 times per day.

InactiveHi Michelle, Good luck with the Axid. So many of our babies have needed PPI’s so if you have no improvement on the Axid I would push for this also. If you want to go this way and have no luck with your pead or GI, some of us have had success with our family drs. That might be another resort for you. Goodluck

InactiveMichelle, Logan’s sleep and feeding sounds much like Hailey’s. I still think we’re dealing with night time reflux even though her endoscopy showed no damage, so maybe it’s non-acidic reflux in our case. Did the sleep doc talk about apnea at all? That’s what we’re looking into now. Good luck. I agree with Therese… is the axid doesn’t do it, try a PPI.

InactiveBTW, all our docs denied that Hailey had anything more than “a mild case of reflux”. Even when she was so fussy that we couldn’t get her to stop crying hysterically all day and night. They preferred to blame colic. At 9 months, when the doc couldn’t blame colic anymore, he started to bring up autism. After a few weeks on a good dose of PPI her behaviour symptoms dramatically improved and she was a different child. She didn’t have colic, or autism, or social anxiety disorder, or any of the other ridiculous things we’ve been told. She had (and still has) reflux. Trust your gut. Colic doesn’t last that long.

InactiveLori-
I’m so glad for your last post. It almost made me cry. Good tears!!! We been told so many different things about Logan and I’m hoping that it all is connected to the reflux. Hailey sounds a lot like Logan. I hope that once we get the meds figured out some of his issues will change also. I haven’t seen much change with the Axid but am going to push for PPI this weekend. I’m not sure which med to ask for though. Did you start with prevacid?
Thanks for all you help and support.

InactiveMichelle,
We started with a PPI at 9 weeks, but we did compounded prilosec. It didn’t work for her at all b/c the dose was no good and it wasn’t made right. Then it took us until she was 10 months old to get all the kinks worked out in terms of her PPI- it wasn’t being made properly and so we still had symptoms. This feuled the docs even more to say that it was something other than reflux… they would say “well she’s on a PPI…she shouldn’t have pain”. We had no other options b/c we didn’t have any other meds here in Canada at the time. Then at 10 months we tried prevacid at 30mg and it was a miracle for her. Unfortunately, we still had to work through all the food problems that she had developed (as she had a feeding aversion). If you can time meds around meals (give it on an empty stomach and follow up with a meal 30 minutes later) then I’d give the solutab a shot. It’s easy to give and many have had success with it. I would look up the marci-kids site and print off some of the info, including the memo for doctors and the dosing info and the docs who are on the team and bring it to your doc so you get a good dose. Or you can tell us where you live and maybe someone can recommend a good doc that doses well. For us the dose (as well as the med) made a big difference.
I swear it does get better. You just need to trust your gut and believe your mommy instinct. Don’t let the docs tell you that it’s nothing if you believe that it’s something.
If you look at the smile on Hailey’s face in her sig pic, you can see that things are much better for her (and us all). Even though she still has reflux and other issues that we’re trying to sort out, she’s such a happy adorable girl and she melts my heart. Hang in there.
