InactiveBen was intolerant of milk-based formula, we had him on Pregestimil. When he was 13 months old, Pregestimil became short from the manufacturer. We couldn’t get it anywhere, so with only 2 cans left, we thought it was time to try introducing whole milk. I did it very slowly, mixing it with his Pregestimil approx. 1/4 whole milk to 3/4 formula. Since he seemed to tolerate that with no problems, I slowly increased the ratio of milk to formula over the course of about a month. The only snag we came accross was as the amount of milk increased, he seemed to get gassier and gassier. I thought perhaps he was lactose intolerant, so I started treating the milk with lactaid drops, and the gas completely went away. Now he does great on whole milk treated with lactaid, and drinks lots of it! I likely would have waited a bit longer, maybe around 15 months or so, to do a milk trial on him though if the Pregestimil hadn’t suddenly become unavailable.

that confuses me. i just saw pregestimil at our jewel osco….and i looked at it. it is milk based. the front says “for babies with fat malabsorption problems”. as far as i know its not for babies with milk intolerances. your son did well on this even though he was milk intolerant?

InactiveWe’re at 22 months and still doing goodstart (and the regular goodstart, not the next step). Our ped is fine with it and told us to continue it until age 2. She also takes soy milk from a sippy cup.

InactiveNatalia,
The Pregestimil is extensively hydrolyzed milk protein based, similar to Nutramigen in that sense, but it is also lactose free and sucrose free which Nutramigen is not. We tried Nutramigen for a while, but he still had problems since he is lactose intolerant and the ped suspected he may also have a bit of sucrose intolerance at the time. Pregestimil is also meant for fat malabsorption, but for us that wasn’t a problem. Had we know about Neocate at the time, we probably would have gone that route, but we hadn’t heard of it then.
