InactiveHi All!
I was just looking for some opinions…Dagney was on thickened Neocate for about 2 1/2 months, but still spit up a lot, not quite as much as before, but still more than your “normal” spit up. Miraculously about 3 weeks ago, she just stopped spitting up for the most part, other than little “normal” spits here and there. Well, last week I decided to pull back on the cereal in her bottle (she was getting about 5-6T of rice cereal per 8 ounce bottle), and she also started solids, and now she’s spitting up a little more again. I’m wondering if the solids do it to them, if she just needs the cereal to help keep it down, or if I should just deal with the spit up, as she doesn’t seem to be in any pain, but those 2 spit-free weeks were like heaven!!! She does move around a bit more when I’m feeding her the bottle now (but she’s a curious 6 1/2 month old too…) and will take it for a good amount (4-5 ounces) then push it away, take it again, and keep repeating that for another 1-2 ounces. It is straight Neocate now, without any rice in it, so I’m not sure if it’s just the taste she doesn’t like & pushes it away as she’s getting more full, or if it’s her reflux bothering her, or of course it could be teething. The other thing is, she’s back to 1/2 hour naps again, when she had been taking 1 1/2 hours in the am and 1 hr in the pm! (We did CIO starting on Monday night, and her nights are wonderful, but now the last 2-3 days she’s only taking 1/2 hour naps again!) I guess I’ll just “go with the flow” and see what today brings. She’s waking up now after 40mins from her am nap, but it sounds like she MIGHT be trying to get back to sleep, or not…
I was originally concerned that all that rice cereal in her bottles could bring on a weight problem, but she’s been on it for so long and weight isn’t an issue (maybe all that rice cereal has kept her from losing weight when she was really throwing up a lot?), maybe I’ll just go back to a little in each bottle tomorrow if it all continues today. Any suggestions/opinions are appreciated, and thanks for listening to me ramble again!

InactiveHmmm….that’s tough one.
I think if it were me I’d stick it out another day or two (without thickening) and see how it goes. Since you started solids at the same time as cutting the thickening, it’s hard to determine which could be the problem. It’s possible that she’s not ready for the solids yet, and it’s also possible that the thickening was helping keep things down, and keeping her comfortable Maybe she’s bothered by non-acidic reflux now that you stopped the cereal. I guess like everything else it will take some trial and error to figure out what may be bothering her…if anything. It could just be a fluke that she’s cutting her naps short or she could be teething. That’s why I’d wait a day or two, then maybe try cutting the solids, or adding the cereal again.
Sorry it that doesn’t help much.

InactiveI would give it another day or two and see. Around that age, naps get so confusing! With Addy, it seemed she was getting more interested in playing instead of napping. It is hard to say about the solids…since Addy just started solids herself, I just don’t know much about them yet.

InactiveThanks! I know, they’re just so confusing! I think I am going to give it at least another day or 2, she isn’t spitting up nearly as much as before, but just more than those 2 blissful weeks! I think I remember someone else on the board saying their baby would go thru spurts of not spitting up, then just when you got used to it, they’d start spitting up again!

InactiveYes, that was my little guy.
Once he went nearly two weeks with no spitting and then BAM it was back with a vengeance.
We had many of these ups and downs between 6 and 9 months of age, until he finally stopped puking for good at about 9 months.March 28, 2007 at 2:09 pm #28811Anonymous
InactiveDenise,
I also was thinkening my 6 month old’s bottles with rice cereal. He had 1 1/2tsp/oz. When I cut back on the cereal to 1tsp/oz he started to maintain his weight but not gain. At 6 months he’s only 14lbs. We’re trying solids but he’s not real interested and he’s teething so that’s aggrivating the reflux. He’s a silent refluxer so no spit up. I think the teething really aggrivates the reflux and I’ve heard that months 4-7 are the worst for refluxers because of the introduction of solids and the beginning of teething. For me, weight is an issue but since Dagney isn’t having weight issues, don’t worry about it.
As far as napping goes, I wouldn’t be worried about shorter naps. My son typically only takes 1/2 hr naps since he was few months old. He still sleeps at night from 6:30p-5:30a with one feeding at 1a.
From my research, teething just messes with the delicate balance that our babies already need. I know my son has little tollerance for pain and the teething is just pushing him over the edge.
As if we didn’t have enough to deal with. 🙂
