Inactiveso we went to our 9 month check up today-even though Ryder is going to be 11 months on the 2nd ( the dr went on vacation TWICE) but that’s besides the point.
So Ryder was weighed and he is 17.9 lbs. I just got off the phone with the dietican’s from our pedi GI office and she said to me that is not good. He was in the 10% but now he is the 5th% so I said I supplement with formula- she thought it would be a good idea since he is going to be a year in a month.
It makes me so angry because I have been saying for awhile now that he isn’t gaining that well- My pedi would just say he is gaining so don’t worry. I went thru this with the twins and now they are still under weight at SIX years old!

I am suppose to hear from the GI Dr tomorrow. I haven’t wanted to call and complain again about the fact that he isn’t sleeping again because I feel like somtimes I am trying to find something to blame-and I am going to blame the MSPI and reflux does that make sense?
I mean today he only took a 30 min nap in the morning – I actually think it was less then that. Then in the afternoon he napped a 30mins. He is cranky. He does have a cold but he has been doing this before he got sick…….
it just makes me so sad that I feel like I can’y do something for him….

InactiveI know how you feel Whitney. Our docs also take an approach to let Hailey sink before taking things seriously. I’d prefer to catch the problem while she’s still afloat.
How is his eating? Can you try a PPI?
HUGS.

InactiveHi Lori-
We are actually still on prevacid and axid too. I do wonder if his does needs to change. I know he was on the low side wuth the prevacid for his weight before…… only 15mgs a day…..
Part of me wonders if it’s reflux though. Is that the main reason why kids don’t gain weight? I mean the twins are still small for their age. At their 6 year check up they are going to take a X-ray of their wrists to see if they are growing on track. Have you ever heard of that??? I was like “What?????”

InactiveAs far as the sleeping goes, for Justice it had everything to do with him not knowing how to go back to sleep and thinking sleep was bad. At least that is what I am thinking at this point. After our sleep training he is doing great. It has taken us almost two weeks, but he is getting there. Actually after a week he slept all night long and didn’t wake at all. Now he is only waking once a night. As for the weight, I have no clue. I hope things get better soon. It is so frustrating.

InactiveI have heard of that actually…probably on TLC or one of those types of cable channels that I watch a lot. I think they are going to look at their growth plates (in the wrists).
As for Ryder, does he eat without a fuss, or is he fussy during feedings?
Since your older boys are underweight as well, maybe it’s something else with Ryder besides reflux. I know that doesn’t help much.
I can’t understand why his doctor isn’t taking it more seriously. I’d probably look for another doctor.March 26, 2007 at 8:17 pm #28584Anonymous
Inactivewhitney—they check for bone age—the bones should be a certain size at a certain age. even if they are behind in bone age, they may not necessarily do anything about it at their age. if three of your children are all below normal weight—it may just be what is normal for your family. i have 9 children and ALL of them have been underweight at some point, if not all of their life.

Inactivei have a question..
how do the children get to be in the 5th percentile?? i mean.. how does reflux or mspi cause it?? wouldnt they have to be throwing up majorly to cause this?? i am just curious because my son is skinny too.. and chunky babies run in both of our families..

InactiveSometimes it’s just genetic and meant to be….. someone has to be in the lower percentiles.
If it is caused by reflux or mspi, I’m guessing it would be because the baby is uncomfortable and doesn’t eat enough.
Whitney, maybe your children are just genetically programmed to be small.

InactiveI do think that I have small children, but I do think there is also something else going on. When the boys were small they did have reflux but they didn’t treat it back then…..or at least it wasn’t bad enough to have to treat it.
Anyhow I just felt that something wasn’t going right with Ryder. Skyler was actually always right on track and gained well and is decent in height.
I do think we need to work on sleep training too- I don’t think it’s just MSPI or reflux. Oh well— Guess I just need to try something new. I do think about supplementing him with some formula or something else to help plump him up!
Ryder has always been a slow gainer and I believe that is why they aren’t too concern. Though my pedi DR mentioned that he has lost weight before, though he has been gaining now. Not too fast though… sigh

Inactivei don’t know how long my kids have actually had celiac disease—-but whenever i said anything about the size of my children, people always said, “oh your kids are just small”, or, “you and kevin aren’t very big.” kevin was skinny as a child, but i was around the 65% when i was in junior high. i always thought of myself as a big girl. i don’t think i was as big as i imagined myself, but i was still above the 50%. i’m not sure what i am trying to say here, except that it can’t hurt to check things out before totally resigning yourself to the idea that your kids are just small. sylvia was failure to thrive before she had her fundo. even after her fundo she was failure to thrive for another year, but it was because of sleep apnea. you produce most of your growth hormone in the deepest stage of sleep—if you don’t get the deep sleep, you don’t produce enough hormone.

InactiveChristine–that’s fascinating. I agree that I wouldn’t let this totally go yet, especially if you aren’t sure if his reflux meds are high enough. Also, in our case with reflux paired up with multiple protein intolerances — even though our child grew well– it seemed his gut just wasn’t right from day one (reminds me of Christine and teh celiac kids in her family). So, if some kids eat less because they don’t feel good, then it’s something to htink about. If they are just small because you haven’t mentioned that you are four foot 2 and so is your husband….well, maybe genetics can play a role as well.
Sleep trouble and weight gain are both classic reflux problems, I would say because their esophagus’ get damaged and they are in pain adn sometimes associate pain with eating and there starts the problem. Are you nursing? Does he look healthy to you? Does he seem happy generally?March 27, 2007 at 9:03 am #28642Anonymous
Inactiveohh my son doesnt sleep well… he moves ALL night long.. i am serious when i say all night, like every 2 min. at least..
soo maybe that is why he is skinny? not enough growth hormones?? he is growing in height though! how would that be explained??

InactiveI am still breastfeeding—- he is pretty happy little kid. Though I have noticed that recently he has been not so quick to smile. Granted we are having a little bit of the sniffles now.
I just wish I could figure out what is going on—–Gawd why can’t he talk?????
