InactiveWell, I need some “reality check”. Alana has been pulling herself up on everything for over a week. Well it is “freaking me out” because I think she’s going to bump her head and have a brain injury or something. Now I know logically millions of babies have survived this time of their lives…but i can’t stop worrying.
Has anyone got any stories to reassure me?

InactiveI don’t have any true reassurance for you…other than time. When Sarah was first learning to pull up and crawl, I baby proofed everything. I left the room for a second and she had tried to pull up on the recliner and fell over crying. I thought “Are you kidding me? I can’t take EVERYTHING out of the room!”. Thankfully within a few weeks she was a pro and now rarely has any falls. Now….when Sarah starts walking that will be another story, but I’m sure in no time Alana will get the hang of it and you’ll feel more confidence in her abilities to be mobile without hurting herself. Hang in there!

InactiveTherese, I’m sure you know that their heads are made to sustain the bumps and bruises and bangs that come along with falling at this stage. I’m also a firm believer in babyproofing though so they don’t get too hurt. My kids have fallen with the best of them. When Sarah had her last seizure she hit her head so hard on the tiles that I was worried about a head injury. The neurologist told us not to worry, basically. It must be a common worry though, because the last time I was at the babyproofers store, I came across a padded helmet for kids who are just being mobile. The picture made me smile. Unfortunately, I think bumps and bruises are all part of the learning process. Just keep your place as safe as you can, and keep your eye on her as much as you can. I’m sure you’ll both come through fine. s&h’s mum2007-4-8 13:56:38

InactiveMy three have all banged their heads more times than I can remember.
The worst time for this seems to be when they are just learning to pull themselves up to stand, and again when they start walking. I don’t think you have much to worry about when the fall from a standing position on the ground. I usually only panic when they’ve fallen from an elevated surface, or when they’ve hit the back of their heads, but even when that’s happened they’ve all been fine. ndrose2007-4-8 13:16:48

InactiveUgh, tell me about it. Gabby has already had two huge bumps on her head. The first one was all daddy’s fault. She fell backward into the bookshelf while he wasn’t watching. The second one was my fault as she tried to climb the kitchen chair next to me, slipped, and smashed her forehead into the wood floor. So, now I’m not allowed to blame my husband anymore. 😉 It happens so quickly and there’s not a lot you can do about it. I was starting to freak out myself, but we made it through childhood without all the fancy stuff they have nowadays.

InactiveThanks guys…you know it is just my worse nightmare (other than being bitten by a snake…we have a lot of poisoness snakes in Aus)…mind you I had to have stiches twice as an infant due to my older brother being a brut…but here I am alive and kicking. Thanksss

InactiveWatch out for her biting her tongue or her lip when she falls as well! Don’t be alarm since the bleeding does stop but mixed with the salvia it seems like a lot. Taylor falls with the best of them and she is known to bite her tongue or lip on the way down very often! She has fallen and bumped her head so many times now, poor 2nd child, trying to do everything her big sister does and poor kid doesn’t get mommy’s full attention as Alexis did as an infant,(I know Alexis never hit her head as much as Tay!)

InactiveSue, we have the same situation over here with Hailey. The bleeding tongue/mouth is scary. It just seems to go on forever, but it seems that a swig of syrup or a spoonful of sugar is supposed to help with clotting.

InactiveIf I’m correct their head are even stronger than ours are, but I still worry. My older son pushes Justice down all the time. He has some really bad falls due to brother. He has horrible bruises all over his head. I’m afraid of him getting taken away from me because they thinik I am beating him. I don’t know if you take Alana to a chiropractor, but it is a good idea after a big fall. We have to take Justice back again and I have no dought she is going to tell me his back is way off. Usually after he gets adjusted he starts sleeping really well too. I wish I could more often, but just can’t afford it. All that to say, I’m sure she will be fine, but I worry too. I never had to deal with this with my first. He didn’t try anything until he knew he could do it. He never walked until 16 months. Justice is my dare devil. I like the safe baby.
Makes me feel much better.April 9, 2007 at 3:16 pm #29938Anonymous
InactiveOkay, I’m worried that I’m going to sound like a bad mommy, but I really don’t worry too much about Alex’s falls. I was a very nervous kid, so I’ve been working hard to avoid doing things that will transfer that nervousness to my children. So… we’ve babyproofed as much as possible, but nothing’s perfect and having a toddler certainly doesn’t help. Kaelyn has a swing for her doll that Alex loves to pull up on, and it’s not at all stable. We tried to put away for a while and Kaelyn noticed right away. We tried waiting her out, but she woke up every morning talking about that stupid swing! So, we pulled it back out. And within two days, Alex had figured out how to pull up on it without knocking it over. Now we just leave it in the middle of the room, far away from furniture and walls in case it falls over, and I try not to worry about it.
You are all so right about the mouth bleeding! Alex has split open her frenulum twice in the last month (the little piece of skin that connects her upper lip to her gum) – once in the tub when Kaelyn accidentally bumped her into the side (with dh and I both right there) and once when she and Kaelyn fell into each other. Both times, she bled forever and it seemed like so much blood! And both times, I think we were more traumatized by it than she was. They really are pretty resilient!

InactiveShelby, I did take Alana to a Chiro for her reflux and you reminded me that she said to take Alana back once she started falling a bit….I might make that appt. Thanks
Kim…I tend to be a bit of a stress nut and would really love Alana not to “catch it”. Hopefully the days she spends at daycare and her “laid back” dad will balance it a bit.
Can’t wait for the bleeding tongue, dh faints at the sight of blood so it will be very interesting (he also feels sick and vomits when people talk about vasectomies
