InactiveJustice went to bed tonight very fussy, all day he has had a runny nose. He wakes up after a few hours of sleeping and can barely cry. He doesn’t have much of a voice, has snot pouring out of him and a really bad cough. The cough is not dry, but sounds like it’s in his chest. Not sure how to describe it. Anyway, he had the same cough a few weeks and it eventually went away. I recently tryed ice cream, I’m bf and he does have some sort of allergy or sensitivity to dairy. Could it be allergies or maybe something else? The last time he had the cough non of the rest of us got sick which is odd for this family. Usually if one of us gets sick and least one more will too. I’m sure he’ll be fine, but I had phnemona (sp) 5x as a kid and almost died of it twice. So, as much as I’d like to say I don’t worry about it I do. I hate going to the doc since they never seem to do us any good. I guess I should wait it out and see what happens. The questiion basically is though could it be allergies? Do those symptoms fit?

InactiveShelby, it sounds like ALana at the moment…runny nose, chesty cough and hoarsness (mind you she also gets this after a fun day at childcare). Theres been a bit of sneezing. Now of course the conjunctivitis. This is the end of week 3. So it could be a virus.
I think you are right though, they can also be symptoms of allergy. Are you worried it was because of the icecream or thinking he might have an allergy to something else (like pollen or dust or something)?
If in doubt I always end up at the Dr…whilst its frustrating to hear “just a virus” I always go away happy that I didn’t miss anything more sinister.

InactiveOf course it could be an allergy, but it really does sound viral. If he’s having such a hard time breathing, then I would certainly take him to the ped. Especially if he’s coughing. I know that it’s usually a waste time, but you never really can tell when it’s something that needs medical attention.
About the no one else getting sick bit- we’ve found that we don’t get as sick from the bugs that Hailey gets anymore- I think like second child syndrome- because they’re normal bugs in the environment that her body is just getting exposed to, but that we’ve already been exposed to, and that Sarah has brought home already. Just because no one else in the house gets sick, doesn’t mean it’s not viral. Just my opinion though…
Can you give him something like an antihistamine to dry him out? Also I would try a humidifier. We’re also a big fan of the benelyn’s plug-ins here- they’re mentholated and help to ease congestion.
But I would definitely take him to the doc.

InactiveI think it is possibly from the ice cream or enviromental. I just read somewhere, I thik on here, that if your baby is exposed to allergens before three months they can end up having those allergies. So, basically since he was born around this time last year he would possibly be allergic to the enviromental stuff that is around this time a year. Who knows for sure though. I don’t know how dh would feel about me taking him to the dr. but if things get worse, I will take him. I would love to hear if it looks like a cold or allergies, but I have heard a dr say that really they can’t tell much unless they open you up.

InactiveI think it could be allergies/asthma. But perhaps a visit or call to the doc would be good, just in case he has an infection.

InactiveI’m not sure if it would be food allergies, but it does sound like the problems that Kaelyn has had with environmental allergies. If your area is anything like ours at the moment, pollen has been ridiculously high. Kaelyn and I have both been miserable with our allergies.
