InactiveI’m so frustrated right now. Paige’s reflux has flared up because she has just gotten over the stomach flu. I know that is normal, and eventually it will get better again, however, she has been burping so much lately!! She’s eating fine, and doesn’t seem to be gulping or swallowing air, and I’m using the Dr. Brown’s bottle with the level 1 nipple. When she feeds, we usually stop for a couple breaks in the middle and burp, but after she’s done eating, it seems like the need to be burped is endless! It’s to the point that it takes about an hour to get her burped, and then I think I must have gotten all the burps out, so then I have to rock her or bounce and walk with her until she’s asleep. Then after only about 20 minutes of sleep she wakes needing to be burped again! Once I get the burp out, and finally get her back to sleep, she often wakes again after about 20 minutes with another burp! After that, it’s usually time to eat again and the cycle starts all over again. This goes on all day and night. Lately, I don’t think I’ve gotten more than 30 minutes of continuous sleep all night. I’m really tired and cranky, my patience is shot, and I feel like have nothing left to give to her or her older brother. It’s really too bad, because the older child suffers too when you have a baby with reflux. I feel like a bad mother to Ben, and that he’s being babysat by Baby Einstein and Disney videos.
Did anyone else have this problem with the burps? If it didn’t interfere with her sleep, it wouldn’t be such a problem, but it does. Any suggestions? I am putting some anti-gas drops in her bottles (simethicone). I don’t know if it’s helping at all, but I’m scared to leave it out in case the burping problem gets worse without it.
Thanks for listening! It feels good just to get it all out.

I reallly feel for you. I went months with no more than 30 – 45 minutes of sleep at a time when things were so bad with Eliana, and I had a two yr. old too. So I sure know what you are going through. Both of my reflux babies had what I would call a “burping problem” but not quite as bad as what you are describing. I have a few ideas…
Neocate is a powder, right? Do you mix it and feed right away? Sometimes when you mix powdered formula it causes lots or air bubbles to form and I’m sure baby swallows those air bubbles. When I used powdered formula I found that if I mixed the bottles a few hours ahead of time and let them sit in the fridge the bubbles would disappear, and then I’d just heat them and feed.
Does she us a pacifier? Some babies swallow a lot of air when they suck on a pacifier. A different size or shape paci might help.
Does she cry a lot while you burp her during feedings? Babies can swallow a lot of air while crying, so sometimes it’s better to burp less often.
Mylicon usually did help my son burp better during feedings but I think it’s possible that it can make it worse for some babies. Mylicon is supposed to make small gas bubbles in the stomach come together to form one big gas bubble so that it can be burped up more easily. I think it’s possible that this can backfire with some babies because maybe the bubble gets too big and the baby can’t burp it up. It might be worth it to try a feeding or two without mylicon and see if she does any better.
Good luck. I sure hope you find the solution soon.

Inactivei dont think CHristine was aware of this, but DO NOT HEAT the neocate. it cannot be heated as it breaks down the amino acids.
also, since its an elemental formula, i never had problems with the bubbles the way i did with milk formulas.
i wish i had a solution for you. that sounds terrible. i hope you figure it out soon..

InactiveThanks Natalia. I didn’t know that.

InactiveThe other option…which we do with pepti…is warm the water and then stir the powder in (that way it dissolves easier).
Now I remember someone talking about burping their bub doing squats or something…hopefully they will chime in.
How does she sleep…I don’t recommend belly sleeping as I know the whole SIDS thing..but now Alana is moving about in her cot she sleeps on her belly and we don’t have any burping issues…I can put her down straight after feeding with no burp and she doesn’t seem bothered. Anyone else got an opinion on stomach sleeping and burping…ie easier/harder.
BTW…you are not a bad mummy…you can only do what you can do. Those kids are a resilient bunch as long as they know mummy loves them they will be OK.
Do you have anyone who can come and watch Paige whilst you have a big sleep?

InactiveWe seem to go through the whole burping like crazy thing with Ben everyone so often. I don’t know why it comes in phases, but it does. And, I’m sorry to say, I don’t have too many answers for you. I give him the gas drops right before I nurse him, and on some days, he sits up, burps a huge burp and is fine, but on other days, he burps for hours, just like you describe.
The only thing I can figure is that it is something I ate that is bothering him, or it sometimes seems like he has this problem more often when he might be a little backed up in the poop department. I have no idea why!!

InactiveI used to do deep knee bends while burping Myles and often it would help.
Have you ever tried giving her some Mylanta when she’s having this problem with burps? The reason I ask is that I have reflux and sometimes when it flares up I have the very uncomfortable sensation of needing to burp and I’m miserable until I do. Sometimes a Tums or Pepcid complete will help me, so I’m wondering if it might help Paige. There is some connection between reflux and burping. I don’t really understand it but I saw it with my reflux babies and I’ve experienced it myself.
Maybe she needs a higher dose of Prevacid. How much does she weigh? Perhaps an increase to 10 mgs. 3 times per day would help.
