InactiveAriella’s had stuffy nose for 10 days now. The ped is not concerned but I am! She can’t sleep or eat as much as she used to b/c she can’t breathe. Is it normal to have it for so long? She’s been on PediaCare for 4 days now and it doesn’t seem to help. What do I do???

Inactiveoh, and I use the Ayr saline drops to loosen the mucus.

InactiveFrom my experience with my three if it’s not improving by day it may be bacterial. Usually when my three have a cold it’s either gone or at least improving by the tenth day. Ellie is the only one of my three that often is sick past 10 days and so I’ve brought her to the doctor many times for this. A few docs have told me that generally you can assume that a cold that lingers past 10 days is probably bacterial. It may have started out as a virus but a secondary bacterial infection sometimes sets in.
Is she at least improving?

Inactivewouldn’t she have a fever if it were bacterial?

InactiveI always thought so but for Ellie it almost always starts out as a cold with a slight fever the first day or so, and then it just progresses from there but usually no fever after the first day or so.

InactiveAlex had a runny/stuffy nose all winter. She ended up with a sinus infection three times, but she never had a fever. So, it’s definitely possible to be bacterial without a fever.

Inactiveoh no! Now I’m scared, what are the signs of sinus infection??

InactiveEvery time she’s been diagnosed we’ve gone in because I was worried about an ear infection. Typically, she’d had a runny/stuffy nose for two or more weeks, it often had started to be a yellow or greenish discharge instead of clear, and she usually had started having trouble sleeping.

InactiveKim, Ariella’s discharge is clear…now I’m really beginning to worry

We saw the ped a week ago and he said that her ears are clear…should I see him to check her again?

InactiveThat’s what Ellie gets often, a sinus infection. It usually starts as a cold but lingers on and on and she ends with a sinus infection. Don’t panic. Basically it just means that the bacteria that initially invaded the nose has moved upward into the sinuses. An antibiotic (usually Zithromax) always clears it up for Ellie.
Some docs will tell you that babies don’t have sinuses and therefore cannot get sinus infections but one doctor explained to me that they can get Upper Respiratory Infections which can be bacterial and need antibiotics to clear up.
As for symptoms for Ellie it’s usually starts as a cold with a clear runny, stuffy nose and sometimes a fever. As time goes on the mucous just gets thicker and thicker and sometimes turns yellow or green (not always, though). The thickness of the (excuse me) snot is what tips me off. Often she has bad breath, and she usually seems to not feel very well. Of course, she can’t sleep well and she doesn’t have much of an appetite.

Inactiveok, I guess I’m scheduling to see her ped…Now I’m paranoid

InactiveI just read an article about runny noses and infants. It said if the discharge is clear and colorless, it could be allergies. As babies get older they develop more enviromental allergies. Could this be the case?

InactiveHey Marianna,
Just thought I’d chime in here to say you are not alone. We have all had the runny, stuffy nose bit here for about 10-14 days. Claire’s is finally cleared up, I think; I’m on about day 10 myself, and Ben is getting there. It started with all that pollen a week or so ago, and has not stopped.
TMI for sure, but our snot STARTED out greenish/yellow and moved into a more clear color. Ben’s isn’t runny anymore, but I can still hear that he is stuffed up and he sometimes seems to have trouble clearing it from the back of his throat (as do I incidentally). I’ve just been using the saline drops to help thin it out.
If Ariella seems to be getting better, I would maybe wait a day or two more. If she seems to be getting worse, however, then a visit to the doc. wouldn’t hurt.
I know how frustrating it is though.. his throwing up has been out of control because of the mucus!

InactiveHeidi, DH gets his allergies in the spring time. Gee, I pray and hope that she doesn’t take that after him as he suffers a lot and hates this time of year

Naomi, Ariella seems to be getting better but I still scheduled an appt to see her ped tomorrow just to make sure that nothing else is brewing in her ears, etc. I’ll keep everyone posted.

InactiveOh, Heidi, I just remembered that I did ask her ped if this is allergies (b/c DH has them) and he says that kiddies that young would first demonstrate with food allergies and then seasonal/environmental. Does that make sense?
