InactiveJust wondering for those of you whose babies were on the hypo formulas, when you started yoghurt, your experiences with it, how often you still give it when you do…etc.
Alana I think is intolerant to milk proteins, although it really did take a couple of weeks for the normal formula trial to turn into a disaster. I am not keen to take her of the pepti-jnr because if she has to go back on she probably won’t drink it. I have given her yoghurt twice in the last two weeks with no noticeable probs.
Very interested in peoples experiences.

InactiveBrianna wasn’t on formula, but my diet was dairy free for the same reason. Here is what I did (on the advice of my GI). I gave Brianna yogurt every day in the AM (I figured if it was bothering her hopefully she would ahve digested it by the PM and would sleep ok). I started iwth a TBSP and worked my way up to a 4 oz serving. I did this for a week…then I tried yogurt 2xday for another week..and then finally started with cheese and had Brianna on dairy at all three meals. Yogurt is supposedly a good one to start with because of the active cultures that aide in digestion. I hope the dairy trial goes well.

InactiveEmily,
When did you start doing this with Brianna? We aren’t there yet, for sure, but just wondering for the future..

InactiveI am printing this thread and putting it in my –when we start to get better file –. It is nice to have true, tried experiences! Thanks for the info!

InactiveAt 8-9 months old I gave Sarah a serving of yogurt (1/2 – 1 whole container of yo baby) everyday for lunch for two weeks. She didn’t have any reaction to it so I thought it might be OK to switch to Good Start. (that was the intention of my “dairy trial”) Good Start didn’t work out for us and I stopped giving her yogurt all together. I found out several weeks later that the sitter has been continuing to give Sarah yogurt 2-3 times per week and I didn’t even know it. Soooo, I’m happy she can tolerate it but wish she could do a milk based formula! (and recently she’s done OK with small amount of shredded cheese!)
Lauren mentioned that Shane had a mucousy diaper almost immediately after his trial with yogurt…but I THINK he has done OK with it recently…maybe she’ll chime in and clarify.
That’s great that Alana has done OK with it, even if it has just been twice. I’d say keep trying!!
GOOD LUCK!

InactiveI can’t remember when we started yogurt with Ben, but it was somewhere between 9 months and 1 year, under the advice of our pediatrician. I started out with the smallest size (60g I think) and gave it to him each day at breakfast. He did just fine on it, and loved it too, so we still give yogurt everyday for breakfast. He was also eating a very small amount of cheese by the time he turned one, and we slowly started him on whole milk around 14 months (slowly increasing the ratio of milk to formula over the course of about a month or so). We were lucky in that he did really well on dairy at the times we introduced it. However, he is still lactose intolerant, so we treat his milk jug with Lactaid drops before he drinks it. The yogurt and small amounts of cheese don’t seem to bother him though (lactose wise I mean) just milk if it is untreated, likely because he drinks tons and tons of it!

InactiveSorry Emily I sometimes forget about you TED breastfeeders…its funny how we get stuck in our own frame of reference
. Its great that other bubs have done well on the yoghurt and fills me with hope (it is also such an easy thing to prepare
)OK, I might try yoghurt once a day in the morning for a couple of weeks and see how we go. She really seemed to like it and given our maternal child and health nurse is concerned she is only taking the bare minimum formula (600mls) a day it might make her happy
. Alana is at the 90%ile for weight and eats everything so I’m not concerned. She also suggested I try a bit of cheese…might wait a little longer for that one. We have been doing hidden soy for awhile with no probs so I have hope that we will do everything in the end.April 20, 2007 at 1:48 pm #31069Anonymous
InactiveTherese,
No worries..and I think your plan is a good one. BRianna LOVES yogurt and eats it every day.

Naomi,
I tried yogurt with Brianna first a nine months (didn’t go so great) and again at 11 months ( my birthday was coming up and DH and I decided if she did well with yogurt I could have a piece of pizza and a slice of cake on my Bday
) For some reason I just knew at 11 months that she would do OK with it, I am not sure why, but my mommy instinct told me she would do OK.April 20, 2007 at 2:16 pm #31070Anonymous
Inactivewell, we first tried the yo baby when Seth was about a year but it seemed to aggravate his reflux so we stopped. Also, I think it was Laura that has posted that there is A LOT of sugar in yo baby and even some non reflux babies have a hard time with it.
We then tried the drinkable Danamils (sp?) a few months later. Seth seemed to be doing ok on them on occasion but on day 5 or so of giving them every morning, he puked it all up in the car on the way to school and was fine right after so I am pretty sure it was the yogurt but not 100%. After this, I also realized he had been more clingy the week I was giving it to him every day but never put the two together. It’s been a LONG time since then but I haven’t tried it again.
So, if you’re brave enough, I would try to give it over a series of days to see if she can tolerate it.
Good luck and keep us posted!

InactiveI’m thinking yoghurt might be a no go at this stage. I have increased the frequency to daily and now we are getting hurtful wind. She seems to grizzle and scream and then pass wind. Poos are fine…two to three a day and nice consistency. So I’m thinking yoghurt (or the million other things that could be it
). Anyway it is easier to cut the yoghurt out. She is sick at the moment so it could be that I suppose but its easier just to stop the yoghurt and see what happens!

InactiveTherese: That is too bad about the yougurt. Would be so fun to be able to give them WHATEVER they want!! It is so hard to know what is going on – which food is the offending one, whether it is a sickness – or whatever! Maybe in a few months she will be fine with the yougurt. Sorry it didn’t work out.

InactiveThanks Brenda. We are lucky she can eat pretty much everything else. It was just an easy way of getting some dairy into her given she is a “bit over” formula so to speak.

Inactivehey therese.. sorry i am late on this post.
yes, shane had a mucousy diaper the first time. than i waited 3 months..and his “nappy” 😉 was fine.. but he broke out in a rash on his cheeks… i gave it again the next day and he broke out with another rash! BUT.. i was crazy enough to wait a week and try again.. and no rash! but he has diarhea!! and he had it the next day too! soooo i am not sure if that was a bug or not! because the next day he also threw up in his crib!
soo.. all in all.. i have no clue! haha… but i am staying away from it for now.. things are crazy with us figuring out his sleep so i dont want to mess around with more things! but i hope yogurt goes well for you..and i wouldnt worry about her passing more gas..she might just be adjusting! g’luck!

InactiveI’m planning on starting yougurt this week. So far, she’s intolerant to bananas, I think. She has been nightwaking a lot and whiney. So, I decided yougurt would be another good way to pack in some calories and good fat. Wish us luck!

InactiveIf she can eat just about anything else, what about trying soy yogurt? Kaelyn loves it, especially the Silk Live drinkable yogurt (although that is getting hard to find around here).
