InactiveBrian gained well 12/05 and 1/06, but his wt. gain is really slowing down after he turned one, he only gain 5oz past month, but he growed 1/2 inch in 2 weeks, I work sooooo hard everyday to get him to eat, so I got so depress when I saw the number on the scale. I kept thinking why he is gaining so slow. I thought of four reason: 1) most baby’s wt. gain slow down after one year of age. 2) he is not in a grow spurt. 3) he needs at least 1000cal/day, he can pretty much reach that goal, but he is taking less formula, I give him oatmeal and chicken to make up for it, it is because formula have more nutrient than oatmeal and chicken? 4) his cal intake all goes for his length grow. Which one can be the reason for his slow wt. gain? please help.
Thank you.

InactiveSharon, i think it’s pretty normal for weight gain to slow around that age. Though it doesn’t make it any easier, especially when it’s a refluxer, I think we’re always counting calories and worried about intake. I think that many of your reasons are likely accurate. Also, they tend to be more active around that age, so they just burn so much more and it’s harder to keep the pounds on. Sounds like he is doing great otherwise. Hang in there.

InactiveMy niece is about 18 months old and doesn’t gain much at all anymore. Well unless there is a growth spurt. I think in the last 6 months she only gained 4 lbs and she is a big girl and very tall.

InactiveAgreed – at that age, my nieces and nephews and friends babies all
slowed down to little or no weight gain – they are just so mobile!March 7, 2006 at 9:30 am #3138Anonymous
InactiveHailey didn’t gain a thing for nearly three months and then all of a sudden I weighed her one day and she was a pound heavier. This was after she weaned herself from the bottle! The average weight gain in the second year (ages 1-2) is 4-6 pounds for the entire year. Try not to worry, which is easier said than done of course.

InactiveHi Sharon –
Just to agree with everyone else, when we were at the GI doctor the other day she mentioned that in the first year kids tend to gain an average of 20 grams a day, but in the second year it drops to 10! Obviously they don’t gain that every day – like what Stacey said happened with Hailey – but the average gain is 1/2 what they gain in the first year so that’s a huge difference. I wouldn’t worry – if he’s getting longer that shows he’s growing, and we definitely find that Owen will get long and skinny for a while and then he’ll chunk up a bit before getting long and skinny again – I think it all just happens in phases.

InactiveKids are only expected to gain 10 lbs between the age of one and three. I remember being so relieved when Gabe turned one so the pressure would be off when getting on the scale. He is still a skinny kid but growing very tall.
The toddler years are hard when it comes to eating. It is very natural for them to just not be as interested. you look at what they take in a week as opposed to a day. just keep offering the right foods/drinks and will balance out.

InactiveThank you every one for the respond. DH and I are both very skinny and tall, and we both eat a lot but never become big, so I think Brian will be the same: tall and skinny.

InactiveHi Sharon,
Just to add, Lucas hovered around 24 lbs for at least four months. We just went to the ped gi and he was finally over 25 lbs. It seemed like he was nearly the same weight forever!
