InactiveI have decided to try to eliminate all bottles by August when I return to school. So I have several months to gradually wean Sarah. As some of you already know, I am very schedule oriented with Sarah…with her sleeping and her eating.
It’s worked very well for us! It would make me feel better if those of you with 12-18 month olds could roughly map out a “typical” day for your LO with their eating? I am just so nervous about the loss of ounces when we transition to sippy (she doesn’t drink nearly as much on a sippy). Also, if it’s not too much trouble could you list some of the foods/and amounts you serve at breakfast/lunch/dinner/snack times? Maybe if I found someone else’s schedule that I liked it would give me more confidence to be bottle free in a few months AND maybe some new food options! Thanks!

InactiveHere’s Myles’ schedule:
Breakfast 7:45 am
1/2 cup oatmeal mixed with 5 ounces whole milk
1/2 of a stage one Prunes.
1 stage one veggie (I know, weird but he has a big appetite in the morning).
Water to drink (he still won’t drink anyting but water).
Lunch 11 am
1/2 of a six ounce container of Yogurt
1 stage 2 container of fruit
PLUS
1/4 to 1/2 of a sandwich (cheese, tuna, or almond butter/jam)
OR – 1/2 of a whole grain waffle with butter and jam
OR – whole wheat crackers and cheddar or goat cheese
OR – 1/2 of a frozen vegetarian chicken pattie
OR – pancakes and eggs
OR – French Toast with jam
OR – 4 ounces or so of Lentil Soup (he loves it!)
OR – some leftovers from the night before.

Small snack at 3 pm
Two Gerber Toddler Cookies, or a few bite sized rice cakes, or a few whole grain crackers, or a handful of cheerios, or some dried veggies from Justtomatoes.com, AND
4 ounces of whole milk (until three months ago I would spoon feed him milk at this time of day but I don’t anymore. I offer it in a sippy but he won’t drink it).
Supper 5 pm
This varies widely depending on what we are eating but generally I give him some protein and grains to eat himself and I feed him some pureed fruits and veggies since he won’t eat those in any other form. Meatballs and pasta is is favorite dish.
Bedtime Bottle 7:15 pm
5-6 ounces of organic milk based toddler formula.

Inactivechristine-
myles takes baby food no problem? Trace wont eat the stuff. sometimes i wish he did….b/c his diet is VERY limited…basically all he eats is veggies and fruits… so i ALWAYS have to have fresh veggies and fruits..which means going to the grocery stores once a week if not more….ugh….
any tricks?

amy-i am stressed about this too….

InactiveNatalia,
I’d be thrilled if Myles would eat fruits and veggies!!!! He won’t touch them. That’s why I feed him babyfood still. Personally I think you’re in a good place with him. He’s getting all the protein and fat he needs from Neocate and he’s eating fruits and veggies which is a struggle for many babies and toddlers. If he didn’t have all the allergies or intolerances, would he eat other things?

InactiveHey Amy, my little guy isn’t there yet, but I’ll try to remember what Claire’s schedule was at that age:
I woke her at 6:30 because I was still teaching then: I nursed her in the morning and at bedtime until 17 months, so
6:30 – short nursing period and then I would give her a sippy of watered juice – she was always a bit constipated, thus the juice. She drank this in the car on the way to the sitters.
Breakfast 7:30 or so (at the sitters) – the rest of her juice and yogurt and toast with jam
OR 1/2 cup cereal and container of fruit mixed in
NAP – 10:00-11:30 or 12
Lunch around noon she ate baby food for quite awhile, so it was usually a container of stage 2 veggies and one of fruit. I gave her these for as long as she would take them. Also things like:
1/2 tuna sandwich or grilled cheese
tomato soup when she got older
or yogurt (if she didn’t get it at breakfast)
or mac ‘n cheese (the shell kind, i think three cheese – easier to pick up)
sometimes the gerber graduate meals if I couldn’t think of anything else to send with her the night before.

diced cheese
Leftovers from dinner
If she didn’t eat the baby food fruit, I would give her some sort of fruit cut up.
She would get milk in her sippy cup. When she first transitioned to this, I would give her the sippy BEFORE lunch and get as much into her as I could, almost like a bottle. As she got older, I would just remind her to keep drinking from it during the meal.
NAP 2:00-3:30 or whenever she woke up
SNACK
watered down juice in her sippy (again, I hated giving her juice, but it was for the poops!
) and something like:handful of cereal – cheerios, honey nut cheerios, cracklin oat bran
or diced fruit
or diced cheese or string cheese(dependent upon what she had for lunch)
few animal crackers or teddy grahams
graham crackers
DINNER around 5:30 or so – usually she ate what we ate, but if it wasn’t appropriate, I would supplement with baby food. She always ate a protein of some sort, veggies and fruit, and usually a grain
She would also get a sippy of milk at dinner too and lots of reminders to keep drinking it.
Bedtime nursing around 7:15

yeah he would…and i always feel so bad when he grabs for my food but he cant eat it…he is really interested in food, but he is milk, soy, wheat, gluten free…and its hard thinking of things for him to eat sometimes.
relatives always ask me where he is getting protein from…and i say his formula…but they just sort of give me weird looks, they really dont understand. but you reassured me.

InactiveAmy,
Brianna isn’t super, super scheduled, but here is the basic typical day:
Breakfast: around 8 am
Banana (everyday…we don’t have any problems with Brianna being “regular”
)A bowl of cherrios or kix or wheaties with milk (when I first weaned Brianna, this was a great time for me to feel like she was getting liquids. Brianna wouldn’t eat baby cereal for some reason at this age, but she would let me spoon feed her the milk that was left over after the cereal)
OR eggs and toast
OR cinnamon bread (pepperidge farm makes the 100% whole wheat kind that is yummy)
Most days Brianna will have a small morning snack of dry cereal or a nutrigrain type bar
Lunch: around 12:30
1/2 grilled cheese (she has this almost every day! She loves them) with some type of veggie (usually the gerber dices) and fruit (her current favorites are blueberries, apple, melon) and milk.
nap 1ish until whenever she wakes up (usually 3ish)
Snack: goldfish, graham crackers, more fruit, yobaby (she has one almost every day), gerber puffs, anything I snack on (her current favorite it to take my snack.lol)
Dinner: 6:30 usually chicken nuggets or boiled chicken thighs or hamburgers. Again with some type of veggie and some type of fruit
Bedtime 7:30-8pm.
I wouldn’t worry about the sippy…it will come. Brianna didn’t really start using them until about 1 year and didn’t really get good with them until about a month later. Now she is drinking out of a big person cup (not all the time as you have to watch her like a hawk becuase she loves to throw stuff. but she can do it.

InactiveAmy:
We just finally got Abby off the bottle last weekend and she turns 15 months on Wednesday. This is a pretty close estimate of what she eats
When she gets up/ride to daycare: sippy cup of formula
8:00 at daycare: cheerios or waffle or pancake
Mid morning: crackers/juice
Lunch: usually whatever the other kids have – she will eat most anything. sippy of formula
Afternoon snack: graham crackers/juice
Supper: whatever we eat pretty much. If it is something I don’t want her to have, I will make her a waffle or grilled cheese. Always has some type of fruit and veggie. Loves having a piece of cheese.
Bedtime: sippy of formula and sometimes a couple crackers
I never thought we would get her off the bottle but with a little persisitance (and great advice from Christine/ndrose) we got a straw sippie cup for her. She totally loves it and doesn’t have to tip it to drink. Now to just get her onto regular milk instead of the bleeping formula

Lots of great ideas in the posts above!!

InactiveTHANK YOU! This is perfect! Exactly what I was looking for. So, do all of you just readily offer a sippy cup throughout the day?? The ONLY thing that Sarah refuses to eat is oatmeal mixed with formula!
That would be a been a good stress relief for me if she took some ounces that way…but it’s a no go. Maybe I’ll keep trying. I’m going to print this thread so I have a reference this summer when I’m home with her all day wondering if I’m doing everything “right”.
Thanks again for all the replies!!!April 30, 2007 at 8:58 pm #31888Anonymous

InactiveHere are a couple links for the ones that have worked well

The first one you can freeze so whatever is in the cup stays colder longer. Works great. Hope it helps!!

InactiveNatalia,
The straw cup I use for Myles is made by Rubbermaid. They call it a juicebox because it is square like a juice box. Here’s one from http://www.amazon.com The picture is not that good, but hopefully you can get the idea. It has a short, blunt little straw which I like because it won’t poke him or hurt him. I bought mine at walmart.
