InactiveWell, on Tues I noticed Alana had some discharge from the vagina area. I waited it out a day or so and she has just got more and more miserable and there has been a reasonable amount of screaming and smelly urine nappies. So now they think Alana has another UTI. But the Dr put her on antibiotics straight away…prior to getting pathology results back because she figured if it was a UTI lets act quick, if it isn’t then no harm (lesser of two evils). So I am desparately trying to catch some urine in those anoying bags…I”m up to number 3 with no luck. Poor little thing. I hope it isn’t a UTI and she isn’t in that much pain.

InactiveOh no! Poor Alana.
I hope she gets feeling better and the antibiotics help.May 3, 2007 at 9:30 am #32114Anonymous
InactiveOh, poor sweetie.
I hope it’s not a UTI, but if it is the antibiotic should clear it up pretty soon. Those bags are difficult. I tried it with Liza and she just hated them and once I got one onto her she’d walk with bowed legs like she was riding a horse.
And of course everytime she filled one up I’d end up losing most of it when I tried to remove it. Did they do a vaginal culture? Sometimes it can be a vaginal infection – I’d be suspicious because of the discharge. It could even be a yeast infection. I didn’t know babies could get that but the doctor told me once that they can.
Good luck. I hope you figure out what it is quickly and that she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveI’m sorry to hear that she has a UTI! I’ve had them and find them quite painful. I also agree with Christine and would wonder about a vaginal infection b/c of the discharge.
I feel for you about the urine bags, but also have to laugh… with you, of course. Read this to learn about our adventures and tips in urine collection. The tip with the tissue doesn’t apply to you guys, because I believe that you need a sterile sample to check for a UTI.

Here’s a tip I found (since we’ve had to do it many times). You give her something to drink. After that point, you can expect a pee about 20 minutes later. So you give her the drink, and then you wait a few minutes, and take off her pants and her diaper. Attach the urine bag, and get her to play IN STANDING as much as possible for the next half hour. Keep a close eye on her, and you will be able to see when the bag starts to fill up. When you see it fill up, then you can stand her up and straighten out the bag to catch the whole pee. It will fill up well. Then the other fun part… the removal! Remove it IN STANDING, it’s the only way it won’t spill out.
I hope she feels better soon! Good luck!!!

InactiveThanks for the tips guys. I have to go get some more bags because we failed dismally with the ones we had.
The discharge was actually collected around the uretha when I removed it…as well as the stuff on the nappy, which is why she suggested it may have come from the bladder.
The other thing is her appetite is reduced and I’m lucky to get 500mls into her at the moment. Solids are OK thought.
To be honest, it wasn’t my normal dr, so I’m not really that sure if she was right (I’m not racist or anything, but she was foreign and at times I think there might have been a little language barrier…i did have to repeat things a few times). At least she wanted to do something though. Anyway, I have made another appointment today to see my dr and get a second opinion.
I’ve done a little reading and read some stats that you can get 85% false positive with bag urine tests, so they can’t be used to diagnose UTI, only exclude them. So if it is positive they apparently have to do the cathater or bladder aspiration. Well we will see how we go. Hopefully it will be negative.
Lori, that post was very very funny. I’m glad I can benefit from your first hand experience

Inactivewell, I finally got some urine IN THE BAG. About 4 mls. They dipsticked it and it was negative. Ya Ya Ya. So no more testing at this stage. So you guessed it, the current diagnosis for her irritability and reduced appetite are a VIRUS. She does seem to be in pain somewhere though, she is alright until the ibuprofen wears of. Who knows. As my dr says, one of three things will happen…it will get better, stay the same or get obviously work. Its only the middle one that is the difficulty!!!!

InactiveGotta love the “virus” diagnosis….
Glad to hear it’s not a UTI. Hope it passes soon.

InactiveViruses, viruses, viruses.
I’m so sick of viruses. All three of my lo’s have some sort of virus now.I’m so glad the urine was negative and I hope she’s feeling better soon. Thank goodness for ibuprofen!

InactiveYUCK! So sorry that Alana’s under the weather. And a virus? Seriously, I’m thinking about making a certificate on the computer and calling myself a doctor… I can look a kid over and declare it a virus just as easily as they can, right? Save me lots of money too.

InactiveOh, glad it wasn’t a UTI…so I’m not a jinx!

InactiveLOL Naomi…you go for it

Well at least the Dr did have the kindness to bulk bill me (in aus the government pays the majority of the Drs fee and then we pay a bit extra depending on the dr…about a 1/4; bulk billing is when they don’t charge the extra bit and just take the government bit).
Tracy…no jinx
