InactiveI am trying not to have my feelings hurt by this, but it’s soooo hard! Every day when I pick up Sarah from daycare she greets me with a big “HI-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE”. It’s soooo cute. She still does this…but lately when I go try to take her out of the sitter’s arms…she’ll start to whine and reach back for her.
I am happy that she loves her sitter so much…but I’m her MOMMY! Sarah has always been very independent and NOT cuddly at all. The only cuddle time I have with her is her last bottle of the night when she’ll sit on my lap (and rarely rarely rarely fall asleep on me). Lately she has even been pushing off my lap as soon as she’s done with her bottle to go play.
Is this an age thing? A “miss independent” thing? I feel like an outsider would think I beat my child or something because she doesn’t really care to be “close” to me. OTHER people can rock her to sleep (on occassion) but she won’t let me…pushes away. We play together, laugh together and she will interact with me plenty…just not in a cuddly way. If we are in an environment with strangers, she will cling to me (so I do know she knows who I am!) Anyway…anyone else have this happen? Have your LO’s preferred the sitter occassionally? She does love me, right???

This is probably a FAR FAR FAR stretch but the last time she was super close to me was when I was desperately trying to breastfeed her and she screamed all the time and pulled away (pre meds). I’ve heard of a feeding aversion due to reflux…what about a snuggle with mommy aversion??

Inactivei am living with my parents right now as me and Mike are seperated at the moment (all of this reflux mess plus other things really took a toll on our relationship) and Trace ALWAYS prefers my parents over me. its kind of nice for me, bc i was with the baby ALL the time before this, mike rarely, if ever took him. lol i dont know what it is…i think babies get bored of their moms since they are with them most of the time…but he still clings to me if no one else is around. he is a very high needs baby due to his gerd and food issues.
i wish they could talk and tell us what they are thinking sometimes!

Inactiveafter i would nurse sylvia, i would almost always have to have one of the twins rock her to sleep. for some reason she would be really fussy for me, but would settle right down for them while she was held. i remember commenting on it once when kassie had her—and she smuggly said, “magic kassie”.

InactiveNatalia – I am really sorry to hear about your relationship.
Reflux really does affect an entire family!Man, I guess I just always thought that MOM was supposed to have the magic touch.

InactiveMy MIL picks the girls up almost every day from day care. It hasn’t happened YET with Alex, but Kaelyn went through a stage when she would cling to grandma when I got there. Now, most of the time, she runs right to me, really excited when I get there. Every now and then, she will yell at me to go away because she’s playing, but then she’ll get over it and be ready to go home. It’s a phase – it will pass.

InactiveIt may be just an attetion getting phase??? Griffin, my oldest, would cry whenever he changed rooms in daycare (a center) in the morning when I took him. Once he was in there a few days then he refused me when I would come to pick him up! I think it was his way of making sure that I was paying attention! It’s also kind of a control thing!
Wait till she can really talk! My son always say’s “Is daddy going to be at home?” b/c apparently I’m not the “fun” one!
It’s funny the things we contemplate! Not to make fun of what you are saying at all! I do the same thing all the time!!

It’s a mom thing! And if your husband is anything like mine, he’s probably saying why are you worried! Your the mommy!

InactiveAmy, I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m actually having a totally opposite problem. Ariella wants to hang on me all day long. I guess I should shut up and enjoy it before she grows up and will want to hang out with her friends instead of her old mom
I’m sure it’ll pass soon.May 8, 2007 at 6:16 am #32572Anonymous
InactiveWhen I go and pick Alana up from daycare its like “who the heck are you and why are you interrupting me”! But if she is at home with dh and I come home from work its the “mummy mummy mummy where have you been” excitement. Maybe its the context?
Maybe the sitter could be kinder to you and not be holding Sarah at go home time

InactiveAmy,
I worked as a nanny and in daycare for years and I saw this all the time!!!! It’s very common and like some of the others said it’s a phase and it passes. I always felt bad for the moms because they took it so personally (why wouldn’t they?). It’s definitely related to a drive for independence.
Liza was not a snuggly baby either. I played with her a lot and gave her tons of hugs and kisses, but she did not like to sit and snuggle. Myles is not much of a snuggler either. Only during stories and when he gets his bedtime bottle. I wonder if she lets other people rock her to sleep because she is uncertain what they expect from her, so she’s more reserved. With you she’s comfortable being herself!

Natalia,
I’m sorry about your separation.
I’m glad you have your parents to help you out.May 8, 2007 at 10:40 am #32593Anonymous
InactiveAmy,
I still remember when my nephew was one, he is now 11, at his 1st birthday party, his babysitter was there, he went 5 days a week to a home daycare and he was running around after her, wanting her to hold him, feed him, etc. It was as if my SIL didn’t exist, she was in tears over it. So, I think it is very common. My son goes to see my sitter 4 days a week, but he spends almost the same amount of hours with her as with me on a weekly basis and he runs the gamut of “I don’t want to go with mommy, I want to stay with Angela” (his sitter), then says other times ,”Mommy, I don’t want you to work anymore, I don’t want to see Angela.” Sure, I feel guilty and upset, but I realize it’s just a phase and he loves me no matter what!!!

Inactiveohh amy i am sorry you are going through that! i can RELATE SOOOO MUCH! as you might know we live with my parents too.. and shane has always known them as well as me and my husband since birth. its hard at time.. like when he whines on my moms leg instead of mine! or when he will reach out of my arms for my moms.. BUT i always remind myself this is just a phase in our lives.. and as they get older they really do know who their parents are no matter what.. and really do love them the most.. its amazing how it happens but its true.
i too worked in daycare until i had shane and like christine said.. i saw it ALL the time.. kids wanting to stay with the teachers instead of go to their parents at the end of the day.. but what a lot of the parents didnt know was the whining or crying they would do during the day for their moms!
soo.. anyway, i know how you feel.. and they do instinctively know we are the moms.. not sure how.. but thank God they do! 😉
and natalia.. hang in there.. my husband in i almost got in that SAME boat since shane was born .. its sooo rough! i pray things will get better.

InactiveAmy,
I agree with what everyone else has said. You know, I am a SAHM, so I am around Brianna ALL the time. But every morning my DH wakes Brianna up and changes her diaper and dresses her. This is thier special time. I can not tell you the number of times I have come downstairs and Brianna wants nothing to do with me. She has even pushed me towards the kitchen.
You know the good thing…Sarah hides behind your legs when she around other people. You are the place that provides her security…and that is priceless!May 8, 2007 at 2:58 pm #32634Anonymous
InactiveAmy,
I so totally remember this phase with Claire, and she was right about the same age as Sarah. She loved her babysitter, and I was so happy that she was happy and loved there, but hurt a little too!
However, she quickly grew out of it… I’ve read somewhere that children tend to act up with parents more because they feel safe.. like they can finally “let their hair down,” so to speak.
She loves you, no doubt about that. And her being an independent child (like Claire) makes all those moments when she comes over to you and just lays her head on your lap (albeit for one second) all the more special!

InactiveOh Amy, I can relate. Except for me, Ben always preferred Daddy. It was like the world revolved around DH, the sun rose and fell when he entered or left a room, and I was just old mom. Many, many times he would push me away and say “No Mama” and want to be alone with his dad. I felt the same way as you, that people would think by the way he treated me that I was a horrible, mean Mama! But when it was just the two of us, he would laugh and play with me just fine. He is still very much a Daddy’s boy, but things have changed a bit since I’ve had Paige. Suddenly he is sharing his time with me, and I’m not so bad any more! It could be that he is just getting older too, and he’s outgrowing that phase. Whatever it is, I’m glad that he’s warming up to me more! But now I think my husband is a getting a little jealous, because I think Paige is a Mommy’s girl!

InactiveTHANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH!
Your experiences have made me feel a lot better about the whole thing. I know that I’m her mom and she will always love me and know who I am…I was just starting to wonder if it was normal! It probably hasn’t helped that she has been sick for about 2 weeks and the clinginess to her has been more prominent lately. I have also always said since she started daycare that sometimes she seems “bored” at home. No other kids running around, not as many toys…maybe that has something to do with it too.
Really ladies…I do feel better and I will try not to take it personally in the future.
THANKS!! -
