InactiveThe doc has prescribed Reactine (the insert with the script says Cyproheptadine). It’s supposed to stimulate her appetite to help overcome any food aversion – if that is what we are dealing with- i think we are dealing with the acid again. I don’t think it’s really food aversion, but he’s gonna give her 2 days to try it and if we don’t see results by Thursday morning we’ll go back on the prevacid.
so, i go to the pharamist to pick up the script and she won’t give it to me. she says they usually don’t give this drug to kids under 2 and she wants to verify with the doc to be sure this is the drug he intended to call in. i mean i appricate her looking out but it’s 530pm – no way is someone from the doc office gonna call her back until tomorrow and i’m thinking we can’t go another day with her not eating much. long story, short – i give her the doc’s private cell number and she calls and confirms with him and i get the med. but i talked to her about her concerns and she says the side effects can be trouble breathing and seizures – SUPER! i’m thinking Reglan all over again!!!
anyway, after all that, we get home and give Lilly the med and w/in 1 minute she throws up. so not knowing how much she kept down we didn’t repeat the dose. oh well, guess we’ll try tomorrow.
anyone heard of Reactine?

InactiveNo, I’ve never heard of it. I think there’s something like it in Canada called Periactin. Lori has mentioned it. Maybe you can pm her and see if she knows anything about this drug.
It does sound scary. I can’t understand why he wouldn’t put her on a PPI before trying something like that.

InactiveOh…that’s what I thought it might be. I don’t know much about it but I think some babies on the board have used it. I’m pretty sure Thais (matthewmamma) has used it for her little guy but she doens’t post as much anymore. Maybe you can try pm’ing her.

InactiveFrom what I’ve read, cyproheptadine (or cyproheptadine hydrochloride) is the generic name for periactin. It’s not the same as reactine, which is citirazine hydrochloride- a different med. Periactin is an allergy medication. It is quite strong so it dries them up and promotes thirst and appetite as a side effect. Doctors won’t use it in Canada, but it’s OTC so I’ve considered using it. My opinion is that if you think that she’s not eating b/c the acid is bothering her, then the periactin might stimulate the appetite as a side effect, but will not address the problem. Periactin does not prevent feeding aversions. It can also cause tiredness b/c it’s an antihistamine.
Good luck.
