InactiveSince Gabby has been on 30mg, feeding her has become easier, but not perfect. I think we are still dealing with a poor appetite or slight DGE (though I’m not keen on the motility agents to give them a try). Here is Gabby’s eating schedule. We are only on two meals a day so far and I’m trying to figure out how to move to three meals. I also need help figuring where bottles fit. Any insights are appreciated.
7:30 Prevacid
8:00 Breakfast: 3 oz formula (2 in cereal, 1 in sippy), 2 – 4 TBSP oatmeal (usually on the lower end) and 1/4 – 1/2 2nd foods
10 – 11ish bottle 6 oz
2-3ish bottle 6oz
6:30-7ish Dinner 3 oz formula, usually 4 TBSP rice, 1/4 – 1/2 2nd foods
Generally better appetite at this point
9-9:30 bedtime bottle 6 ozMy problem is the morning bottle sometimes is limited to 3-4 oz. She really is an every 4 hour eater and it doesn’t matter if it’s bottle or food. The problem is that there is not enough four hour increments in the day to do breakfast, lunch, dinner and three bottles. I guess there is if we stay up all night. Anyways, I just need suggestions on how to do this. I’m also noticing feeding herself is much more preferred for her. She only wanted 2 TBSP oatmeal today but she ate 15 – 20 cheerios that I threw on her tray after she refused. Help please!

InactiveI don’t know if this will make you feel any better or not, but Myles was eating much less than that at 9 months of age. I am convinced that he had DGE as well as reflux and that’s why his appetite was not great even when he was pain free on Prevacid. He ate enough to survive and that’s it. The important thing is that he did thrive on what he was eating, which was about 550 calories a day. My theory about this is that babies with DGE absorb more nutrients from their food because it takes so long for it to move out of the system.
Anyway, when he outgrew his DGE it was so obvious because his appetite increases substantially, but he did not put on huge amounts of weight, which supports my theory that he’s absorbing less of what he eats because he eats tons more than he used to but stays in the same 40th – 50th percentile for weight.
So, I guess my advice to you would be to let her weight be your guide to whether she is getting enough or not and try not to focus so much on ounces or amounts that she’s eating. Also, I think many 9 month olds are on 3 bottles per day. She might eat more solids if you dropped it down to three bottles. Oh, and take advantage of her interest in self feeding and try to offer lots of variety. This is a great time for her to learn to like all kinds of foods.
Sounds like she’s doing well!

Inactiveo.k i just skimmed your schedule.. but i will let you know how we did/still do do it with shane. he is only a bit older than gabriella.. and he too is on the 4 hr. feeding schedule..
7:00: bottle ( since you do meds in the morning.. i would do meds right when she wakes up and than wait 30 min. and than do a bottle)
7:30/8:00: breakfast (fruit/waffle/eggs/etc)
11ish:bottle
11:30/12:00: lunch(veggie/toast/acocado/etc)
possible snack at like 2:00 or 3:00 (puffs/cherrios)
4:00:bottle(if no snack)
5:00:bottle (if snack)
5:30:dinner(if no snack)
6:00:dinner (if snack)
than bed @ 6:60/7:00

(oh and i do meds at night.. so i do it right before the 5 o’clock bottle.)

InactiveCurrently Alana’s day is such
6.30-7 bottle
7.30-8 b’fast
10-10.30 Morning tea
12 to 12.30 lunch
1-2 hrs later after lunch Bottle
3.30 afo tea
5.30 tea
6.30 bottle.
She only takes about 6-7 ounces in each bottle but even when she was on 4 bottles she only took about 18-20 ounces all up.
Prior to transition to 3 bottles her fourth bottle was in place of morning tea (she only ever used to take about 2 ounces).
I just go by weight and wet nappies now. Alana keeps gaining and has wet nappies so I am learning just to go with her flow. I also offer water before and after every meal (she usually only takes it after).
We do finger foods at at least two occasion during the day…jsut to keep her stimulated.
Cheers

InactiveI’m really jealous that you can get your kids to go to sleep around 7pm. My kid always wants to stay up til we are ready for bed. Her bedtime is usually 9ish, and we get up around 7 – 7:30. Anyone else deal with a night owl?
And as I was saying for the four hour schedule, she really doesn’t want to eat anything unless she waits four hours. For example, if I didn’t offer that morning bottle to her sleepy, she would wait four hours after breakfast. And then four hours after the bottle to eat again, solids or another bottle. I’m hoping once we lose another bottle, things will be easier. When do babies drop down to two bottles.? Gabby will take a sippy with 2 ounces or so but not much more. But I figure with what I add to her cereal and give her in her sippy, I could get to 20 oz, but no more. I just would like her to get more calories from the formula than the food.

InactiveI can’t use Myles as an example on when babies go to three bottles because he had a bit of a bottle aversion and gave it up totally at 7 months (except for a bedtime bottle), but both of my girls were on 3 bottles a day at 9 months and from what I can remember from my nanny days, that was pretty typical for a 9 month old.
Since Myles disliked bottles I learned to get lots of breast milk or formula into him by adding it to his baby foods. For instance I used to make his morning oatmeal with 7-8 ounces of breast milk. It was runny and messy but I felt he needed it because he did not take a bottle all day and would not drink from a sippy either. Also I’d add a little milk to his baby foods, maybe 1/2 an ounce to each serving so that added up to another two ounces a day.
I think if she drank 3 bottles a day she’d probably be getting enough formula.
As for bedtime, Myles was going to bed at 9 for a long time. It gradually got earlier and earlier as his daytime napping decreased. Since about a year of age he’s been going to bed at 7:30.

Inactivehow much does gabby nap during the day?shane only does a total of 1.5 hrs. on average..and actually has only been doing one nap recently.. soo by 6 o’clock he is soo shot! does gabby nap more than he does? if so, thats probably why she is up later

InactiveGabby naps on average 2 -3 hours in two naps. One is generally long and the other is short. yesterday, she moved her two naps into one and slept 3 hours straight. Crazy!
Anyways, Gabby has been on only three bottles since seven months. I’m wondering when we move to two. Is that after the first birthday? I know you aren’t supposed to do bottles, but I’m going to at least keep the night bottle til 18 months, and quite possibly the nap one if she doesn’t get enough fluids in her.
I think part of her unwillingness to go to bed is result of her daddy. He is not necessarily soothing at night. He gets her all worked up playing and then she wants to stay up and party. I know he needs his time with her too, but by 7pm, I’m shot. Staying at home is the hardest job I’ve ever had, not that I don’t love it.

InactiveYes, I agree. Being a SAHM is the hardest job in the world. Bedtime can never come soon enough for me!

Sorry, for some reason I thought she was on four bottles.

I kept my girls on two bottles (nap time and bedtime) until they were 18 months; Liza may have been even older than that. I think they were probably younger than a year, probably 10 months or so when they went to two bottles. And Myles still gets a bedtime bottle. I don’t see any reason to have babies off the bottle at a year, as long as they are not sucking on a bottle all day or taking it to bed with them.

InactiveI BF Brianna so I know it is kind of different, but this is what I found. When schedules got to tight to fit in all hte feedings, that is when it was time to drop a nursing session.
I know I did still have Brianna on three times a day nursing until she was almost 11 months, but my ped also said at around nine months is when babies start getting more intersted in table food, and that starts to take over the nutrition more compared to formula/BM for most babies (not all). Also, if she is wetting her diapers and gaining weight, I wouldn’t worry too much about the specific amount of ounces.May 11, 2007 at 5:45 am #32860Anonymous
InactiveLauren, Tea is Dinner or the evening meal (I think you sometimes call it supper).
Maybe Gabby would eat less than four hourly if finger foods were offered??? I think 9 months is probably a good time to up the amount of finger foods.
I’ve also noticed Alana is starting to eat less at each meal as she gets older…but I think that is normal as they get older (and was needed because she used to be a snorty pig).
My understanding is at 9 months you can offer milk after food rather than before, so if you were thinking of cutting out a bottle, thats probably the way I would do it. Offer a meal first. But it should still be their major food source.
I am going to keep going with three bottles until one and then lose the daytime one. Keeping the morning and night ones for maybe 3 months longer, then drop the night one. Alana will not eat food that has her formula in it….she can sniff it out at 5 paces so I don’t have that option. She also is not into cereals at all, so I can’t add it to that either.
