InactiveSo this is the 4th day (3rd complete day) of these small frequent feedings for Cooper. He loves it and well I hate it. He ate 9 times on Friday and Saturday and has already eaten 8 times today with at least 2 more feedings before bedtime. He rarely stops before he gets to his 4 oz max and I have had to give him 5 oz a handful of times b/c of screaming. He is having wet diapers like crazy of course and taking 4-5 oz more each day than he was before we were doing these feedings. Not to mention we are back to 2 feedings/night when we had gotten him down to 1 for a few weeks before this change. He is sleeping more during the day and less at night now and I am concerned it is because he is constantly in a state of “semi-fullness”. Today has been a real challenge, I have not been able to keep him awake for more than 1 hour at a time. Did manage on almost 2 hour stretch, but that took some work.
Does anyone have any suggestions. I am a basket case. I had finally felt like things were going to be somewhat normal (except for the excessive spitting) and now with the new plan for the doctor, I feel like we have taken major steps backwards. And of course all of this on my first Mother’s Day!!
Thanks for the help.

InactiveYou know that is a hard one.
It’s great that he can take 30 plus oz in a day, but I know how it can be for you!
My personal opionion is that you really have to play around with each baby!
Was he previously vomiting a lot? This is okay if he isn’t in pain.
I say vomit because spitting just doesn’t describe it well enough. My son was in the hospital for awhile to get his MSPI under control when we were first diagnosed. He spit up a lot, but I didn’t realize how much until we were there because I had to “catch” the spit ups in a cloth diaper and they would weigh each one and they would weigh each of his wet diapers. The kid was literally spitting up his entire bottle and peeing out the rest and therefor gaining no weight. At 4 mo, he weighed just over 10 lbs, so it sounds like you are doing well if Cooper is already 12.
I would say you could go to 5 oz if he is keeping them down better than before. I really had to play around with my son. He is still very sensitive and it seems if I do just the wrong thing, he pukes up his entire meal sometimes and he is on solids now too.
Hang in there. It seemed like I did laundry day and night for awile because of the spitting up and when he started solids, I really noticed a difference. My doc was really adament about not starting cereal with my son until 4 months, but I must confess I cheated and started him on it at about 3 1/2 out of despiration because he was only eating about 15-20 oz. per day. He had an NG tube for 10 weeks and the doc threatened to put it back in if I couldn’t get him to eat. I pushed the cereal and he did well with it. AGAIN, every baby is soooooo different!
He is JUST NOW starting to sleep through the night consistently
and b/c of some ear infections, we have had sleep setbacks. The sleep really seems to be the last thing to come for these refluxers. Sorry to burst your bubble!!
Is this your first?? I have an older son who was a great eater and sleeper and I never imagined this could happen! Hang in there!
And by the way Happy Mother’s Day! Remember, this too shall pass, it just may take a little longer than you would wish!!

InactiveWell, this is just one of those issues that you will have to make yourself decide on. Not an easy one, for sure. But, to tell the truth, if it were me, I would probably go back to what you were doing before IF you feel his pain is under control. But, it sounds like he is eating so much because his pain isn’t managed yet, and hopefully, once that is under control, he’ll be able to go a bit longer.
Was he gaining weight before you started the many feeds? Does he seem in less pain now than before? I guess these are the issues I would weigh before making your decision.
I would guess that his Prevacid dose isn’t high enough, so he is wanting to eat to kill the burn.. my son was the same way.
I can only imagine how exhausted you are, and I’m so sorry. Do you think the doc. would increase his meds???

InactiveWhy did the doc say to feed him so often? When it comes to feeding, I’m a big believer in doing what works for your baby. All babies are different, and I don’t think that general rules are easy to follow.
