I don’t want to steal anyones post so I will ask here. Why do a compound? We never did because insurance wouldn’t pay for it at the time with Luke and never tryed it with Justice. I just hear so many people say it has to be just right and pharmacies usually don’t do it right.

Next question. How can you give prevacid solutabs without crushing it up? I just read on another post that you can’t crush them up. I have so much to learn. I thought after going through this twice that I had learned so much and I know I have, but boy there is so much more to learn.

compounds are conveneint because you dont have to time with meals. i dont trust pharmacy compounds though, so we get caracream from marci-kids and mix in the prevacid capsules.

some people do have luck with compounds if the pharamcy makes it correctly. this is how they need to make it, and it needs to be made every 14 days.

“
1. Make sure that your pharmacist does not put any kind of flavoring agent in the compound.
1. Make sure that the concentration is between 2 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL. This means that for every milliliter of suspension, you are giving between 2 and 4 milligrams of drug.
1. Ask that your pharmacist make the compound with 16.8% sodium bicarbonate if the total volume of each dose is less than 7 mL. If the total volume of each dose is greater than 7 mL, ask that your pharmacist make the compound with at least 8.4% sodium bicarbonate. We also do not recommend that you give less than 3.5 mL of a PPI suspension at any concentration. This is because doses smaller than 3.5 mL do not provide enough buffer to adequately protect the drug from being destroyed by the acid that is present in the stomach.
It is important that the pharmacy does not add flavoring to the compound as it will almost certainly cause it to lose its stability much more quickly. It tastes pretty aweful this way, I know, but it’s better than the alternative.”

solutabs from my understanding should be dissolved in water.

We use the compounded Prevacid mainly because that’s the one our insurance covers without authorizations, etc, but it’s also been nice not having to time it around meals, especially with Bryce’s DGE. Apparently a lot of people have had problems with the compounds going unstable, but we have not had this issue in the year that Bryce has been on it. We do refill it every 2 weeks just in case though.

Hi

I am definatly with Natalia on this one. I read a lot of her posts and saw the success she has had with Caracream. I found a Kmart pharmacy here to order it for me and I add the Prevacid capsules at home myself. After day #2 of using the Caracream, Katie has been a “normal” baby. (Like I would know normal if I saw it)

Honestly, I even went so far as to go to a specialty compounding pharmacy to have the stuff made and they just didn’t listen to my requests. They measured the stability by the Ph content. Well…. after 6 days the stuff was bad and poor Katie was like she was on nothing at all.

I prefer the compound because Katie is so fussy and I can’t time the meals around the medicine.

Anyway….Life is great thanks to Caracream.

Thanks everybody. I never realized that compounding the meds. made it so you didn’t have to time around meals. I had no idea what it was for. As far as the solutabs, I tryed them with Luke and I think I did try to dissolve them in water and it seems like they didn’t dissolve well. Oh, I know what it was, it would get stuck in the syringe. Seems like we eventually crushed them up too. At the time they seemed like more work so we went back to the pkts. Of course, the poor thing never found relief until he outgrew his reflux.

Thanks again.
