Inactivelatex fumes are not dangerous—and incidently, if a child gets a little latex paint in their mouth—-it won’t hurt them—-at least that is what poison control told me.LOL!! (elliot, the same one with the broken arm and the black eye, although i would still recommend calling if your child eats it!!)
once my kids learned how to go down the stairs, we didn’t worry about the gate anymore. i sometimes would work with them to help them learn to go up and down. ian went down the stairs once (he started crawling at about 5 1/2 months) and it was really scary—the nurse got nervous when she looked at his eyes and went and got the doctor out of the room where he was with another patient—he was fine, (but i think the doctor may have had us wake him up a couple of times during the night–can’t remember for sure) later he went down the stairs on a little tykes table, turned upside down.(not on purpose) he wasn’t hurt a bit—i guess it was kind of like a sled.

Inactive1. We couldn’t keep them dry, so they are in her bedroom on her bookshelf just like the regular books.

2. Not sure. She can’t have regular milk and we generally don’t leave her soy milk out for more than an hour.
3. I think it’s okay if she doesn’t spend much time in the room actually being painted and if you ventilate well, but I’m not sure about that.
4. We have one that has a clear plastic center – so it has no holes to serve as leverage for climbing over it. That one is at the top of the stairs that go down to our family room (we live in a tri-level, so we have three sets of stairs). Then the original one we bought is just a spring action normal old plastic gate. That one is at the bottom of the stairs that go up to the bedrooms. It’s higher off the ground so Kaelyn can’t use the holes for leverage. Yes, climbing over the gate was a problem for us. I have a very adventurous and gymnastic child.

By 18 months Kaelyn was very good at stairs so we just took the gates down. They are now back up for Alex. I thought that Kaelyn would go nuts with them up but she just asks us to lift her over them if she wants to go up or down the stairs.
Christine, Kaelyn went “sledding” down our stairs on a gate that she knocked over at the top of the stairs. She was about 8 months old and it scared the living daylights out of us, but she thought that it was great fun!

InactiveSarah is already starting to climb things (and even moving/arranging things to make “steps”). That’s why I’m particularly worried about the stairs at the new house. It will also be a tri-level so I definitely want gates at the top of each staircase. I just wondered how long people generally leave them up. I am terrified of some of the stories you ladies have already told! I can totally see Sarah sledding down the steps!

InactiveAmy, our tri level is actually more of a quad level I guess. There is a fourth floor that is just one bedroom. There are only 3 stairs up to it and there’s a door at the top, so we don’t worry about those stairs. The banister at the top of the stairs going from the main floor to the bedrooms is weird, so we had a hard time finding a gate that would work at the top – that’s how Kaelyn ended up sledding down them. So… we gave up and now we don’t let Alex play freely on that floor. If we are playing in her bedroom or Kaelyn’s bedroom, we just close the door to keep her away from the stairs. We found that almost any gate works for the bottom of those stairs and for the top of the little set of stairs going down to the family room.

Inactivewhen molly was a baby, we had remodeled and moved the staircase. the room was kind of in limbo for awhile before we finished it—-meaning there was a gaping hole in the floor with no railing around the uncarpeted stairs. it stayed that way until she started to crawl—when i got insistent about getting a railing up. we got the stairs padded and carpeted—-and she promply fell down them. they have a landing and take a left turn, so she only fell to the landing and wasn’t hurt. kevieb2007-5-18 21:52:59
