Hi All! I just took Carson in today and he is very close to pneumonia. I strollered with him last night and the coughing got worse as we went. I thought it was his allergies wreeking havok again. Doctor agreed. We are double nebbing/Singulair/Antibiotic. HOWEVER, she said this: It may not be too bad to “trade” a few outdoor allergies with his food allergies or intolerances. I said WHAT? She said, often when kids have, say pollen or ragweed allergies during the spring/summer months, they then outgrow their food intolerances/allergies. I must have given her a: you ARE a crazy doc, aren’t you? Because she said – no, really.

I guess time will tell. I am very ready to be done with the MSPI. Has anyone heard of this? She is usually a good doc…. ?? Whatchall think?

Sounds like an interesting theory. Maybe you could tell her you are very interested and ask her for some references or where you could find some literature supporting this?

You are so right. I was so concerned with Carson’s breathing, etc., and then she laid this one on me. When I return I will ask her again. ??I just really wonder??

Hmmm…I’ve never heard that but I don’t know much about allergies. I can tell you that my doc has told me a few things that I thought were rather outlandish but later I realized she was right. Hopefully there’s some truth to what she’s saying and his MSPI days are comding to an end.

I’m sorry to hear he has pneumonia. I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

actually, i like it when a doc is willing to consider things that are a little off the medical beaten path. i have been surprised to hear our ped gi say that it is possible that food additives and such could possibly cause the increased amount of food allergies there seem to be.

i tend to agree with her about it not being too bad to trade outdoor allergies for food allergies. outdoor allergies can be treated with medication, usually quite successfully—-food allergies are a little more tricky.

That is an interesting theory. Our Doc told us that Cooper would most likely grow out of his MSPI between 6-9months and that I think he said 90% of kids outgrow it by the time they are 1 year old. I sure hope that is the case.

It doesn’t exactly match what your doctor said, but we were told that many children with food allergies will also develop environmental allergies. 85% of them will outgrow the food allergies, but the environmental allergies tend to stick around. So… it could look like you traded the food for the environment.

I would SO LOVE to be giving allergy meds instead of watching for MSPI foods! Carson is 2 in July – can’t wait to allergy test him again.

We just got back from a graduation and the mother of the graduate offered me a plate of food – and I hate to eat in front of Carson when he can’t eat – so I told her he has MSPI, blah, blah. She said her daughter was soy intolerant as a baby. I said oh, when did she outgrow it and she said – early school years. I can’t wait that long. I know there must be MSPI adults out there, but it is so hard to find food that Carson LIKES and will eat without choking on it. I truly hope this doctor is right and soon he will outgrow this. How many prayers must it take? Give it to me – let him eat what he wants and grow. (this maybe should have been in the boo, hoo, I am feeling sorry for myself forum!)

I’m sorry you are feeling down today. You’ve been dealing with this for a long time and I’m sure it gets very depressing.

I hope Carson can eat whatever he wants one day soon.

Thanks Christine. It is so nice to know there are others out there who have dealt with this also. I get SICK to death of my relatives and even people at church who don’t GET IT. Thank you! Hugs back to you!

My son, who is 3 in a few weeks, did out grow his food issues (minus celiac as that is lifelong) but his soy/milk he did

He does have tons of environmental allergies though,.you cant avoid those so they get worse….getting over allergy/intolerance is all about avoiding the food, and then finally they get over them….his ped allergist said that 80% of kids outgrow there allergies by 3….he also said the only lifelong food allergies seem to be peanuts and shellfish (of course there are rare exceptions)

so there is hope…..heck my daughter is almost 11 months and cant eat ANYTHING, but I know avoiding it all now and just doing neocate will help her in the long run and outgrow it “quicker”

Shannon: Thanks for the reply. I just hope we are not the 20%!!! I think one of my biggest issues is finding foods that Carson can eat without gagging and that he likes. I have lists and lists and a cupboard of food that he doesn’t like. Of course, I think in my mind – if he could have dairy or if he could have soy, etc. but who knows – maybe he wouldn;t eat those foods either. Carson is still on Neocate so I have to believe that is helping him heal also. Thanks for the good news. Carson will be 2 in 2 months and we are looking forward to any good news we can find! Have a great Mem day weekend.
