InactiveI use Dr. Brown’s bottles and have a problem with the nipples. Barret doesn’t do well with the level 1 nipples. It takes him about 45 mibutes to take 4 oz.
He is able to eat too fast with the level 2 nipples and this causes him to have a flare up. However, he does have less gas using these bottles.
I’ve tried Avent and he wouldn’t take it at all He just refused to eat, period.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Inactivei don’t know what formula he is taking but my baby takes enfamil A.R. since it is thickened with rice starch the dr. browns bottles didnt work for me but he likes the platex drop ins anyways i was having the same problem with him and the nipples he will take up to 1 hr to finish 5 oz with level 1 so i changed to level 2 when he was 2 months he is still using it now that he is 6 months i guess he just had to get used to the fast flow, at the beggining he i tried giving him 1 1/2 oz. and then take a break and burp so he wouldnt vomit because of the fast flow you may want to try that. gabbs2007-5-18 17:28:33

InactiveI agree with trying to maybe thicken it up. We had the same problem with Isaac and ended up doing rice cereal at a few weeks old.

Inactivethe best bottle for us.. has been the drop ins as well! not the slow flow..that would take about 2 hrs.. but the fast flow is perfect.. its kind of like a medium flow. and we dont thicken.

InactiveThanks guys! We’ll try your suggestions and see if it helps. I’m willing to try anything at this point if it will help my little guy!
How much cereal do you put in the bottle to thicken it? Thanks again!

InactiveMy Cooper is the exact same age as Barret, how neat! Anyway, we were on Avent bottles and just last week switched to Dr Brown’s before the switch we had been thickening his formula with rice cereal. We started with 1/4 tsp per oz of formula and before the Ped GI told us not to do that b/c of his MSPI we were at 1/3 tsp per oz of formula, we were using the #2 nipple for the Avent bottle and it was working well. Still on #1 nipple with Dr Brown’s will probably try the switch when he is 4 months old or so. He luckily is a great eater, takes 4 oz in 12 minutes usually, but we don’t stop to burp b/c he doesn’t like being burped and ends up spitting up more if we try to burp during the bottle vs waiting until the end.

InactiveHow cool! How much does Cooper weigh? Barret is 13 lbs.
We tried Avent, but he wouldn’t take the bottle at all! We use Dr.Brown’s too and just tried the level 2 nipples. I’m going to try the rice cereal this weekend to see if it helps. He eats sooooooo slow on the level 1 nipple and too fast with the level 2.
Barret does better being burped after every 2 ounces. He was a big spitter before meds and burping often seems to help. I usually can’t get a big burp out of him when hes sleepy.
Keep in touch and let me know how Cooper is! Our little guys just had their 3 month birthday!!!!

InactiveLast week he was 12 pounds 11 oz, he was big at birth (9lbs 11oz), but had a set back while we were breastfeeding and at 3 weeks was only 8lbs 12oz, so I am very happy with his progress since we figured out what was wrong with him (ie reflux and MSPI). I just hope he out grows the MSPI.

InactiveBarret was small at birth (7lbs 3oz) and lost down to 6lbs 8oz. He has a blood disease and was in the NICU for 5 days. I was trying to breastfeed and he just wouldn’t do it. They had to give him formula becuase he was so jaundice. He had to have IVs in fact to get it down.
Barret doesn’t have MSPI, but my friend’s baby does. She is on Neocate and it has worked wonders for her! I know what she went through with her little girl and I really feel for you and Cooper.
Sounds like Cooper is doing very well! I know your proud of him! It can be a challenge to feed a refluxer. Lord knows I know all about that! Barret would arch his back and scream so bad he would stop breathing until we got his meds regulated and found the right formula.
Please keep in touch with me! I think its so neat our boys have the same birthday!
