InactiveHi,
This might sound like a stupid question but what exactly is a ” feeding aversion” ? Is it when they just won’t eat at all? Also, what is it when your baby is a sleepfeeder? I hear all those terms thrown around a lot and was just wondering what exactly they meant. Thanks!

InactiveSleep feeder – a baby who will only take a bottle or nurse when asleep or sleepy. My son did this for a while before he was on the right dose of Prevacid.
Feeding Aversion – the baby has learned to associate eating with pain due to untreated or under treated reflux. There are probably varying degrees of feeding aversion. My son developed a “mild” feeding aversion, but only towards the bottle. He gave up the bottle at 7 months of age but thankfully continued to take breast milk and solids from a spoon. Some babies develop an aversion to any kinds of feeds; bottle/breast/spoon and have to be tube fed.

InactiveHailey is probably the “sleep feeder” and “feeding aversion” baby that you’re talking about… thankfully we don’t have many around the site anymore!
Christine described the two pretty well.
Hailey had early feeding signs that things were not going well that were associated with initial breastfeeding kinks, low milk supply, and overactive let down (we were told so many different things depending on who was doing the talking.
) We were told it was that on top of colic. The transition was very gradual but she became increasingly harder to feed until she completely stopped eating outright at 8 weeks. The doc was talking about tube feeding, but we noticed that we were able to feed her a little bit but with difficulty when she was asleep (hence the term sleep feeding). For Hailey it was still a struggle, but this was the only way we were able to feed her during most of her first year. This was because of her feeding aversion- meaning that she had formed a dislike of eating/fear of eating. She learned that eating hurt, and so when most babies learn that nursing/bottle feeding is comfortable, Hailey learned that it causes her pain, and so rather then feel pain, they don’t want to eat. They learn that eating is not pleasurable. Reflux is just one cause of feeding aversions. Others are developmental problems that make eating difficult, sensory issues that make eating unpleasant, prematurity or inability to co-ordinate suck-swallow-breathe. There are many causes, but basically it’s a learned thing that happens because the normal learning process about eating (ie. I’m hungry, I eat, I feel good) is interrupted (i.e. I’m hungry, I eat, I hurt, I don’t want to eat). Some babies are only averse to liquids others, like Hailey, to solids and liquids. HTH.

InactiveCarson is referred to as failure to thrive (FTT) and eating aversions. Carson would go most of the day without eating. He will only take a few bites and then he is done. Lips shut. He also chews food up but then spits it out. He knows that he shouldn’t and he actually does this pretty sneakily. Our specialist said it is because he is SO DARN SMART. Oh, really?!! He said that Carson knows that it is painful, at times, to eat and reflux the food back up, so he has learned just not to do that to is little body. It is a horrible, terrible thing. In your other post, I think I talked about kids working their way into a feeding aversion – due to the reflux pain not being under control with the Prilosec/Prevacid. You could spring this info on the doc also – that you are trying to get this under control ASAP so you don’t have a feeding aversion baby on your hands. Good luck with Kate!

InactiveWow,
Now I’m terrified Kate will develop this! You’re right though, maybe the doc will listen if I tell them how serious it is and how unacceptable it is that they haven’t done anything so far. It’s my fault though to some extent because I just am learning about all of this stuff. It’s sooo overwhelming!
I’m hopeful though! We tried to videotape Kate’s horrendous feed last night but the batteries ran out half way through. I played it back this morning and it ripped my heart out. Well, tommorrow maybe something will actually get done or at least someone will take me seriously. Or else, we’re on to our fourth ped!!
I’ll keep you posted! Oh, do you guys think 3ml of carafate 4xday is too much. Kate gags and screams everytime I give it to her. Just wondering. Thanks again for all the support!May 20, 2007 at 8:41 pm #33938Anonymous
InactiveClaire – I have never personally used Carafate.
