Claire,
I also understand how you feel. I cried so much Caden’s first 3 months of life that everyone thought I had have post-partum depression (I didn’t). I was just SO worried about him, stressed about whether I was doing the right thing by continuing to nurse, etc.
I seriously considered weaning him (not just once but many times) on those days when he was fighting nursing and appeared uncomfortable. Somehow emotionally I couldn’t do it. I just didn’t want to lose that special bond with him, and for him sometimes nursing was a real comfort (when he was having a good day), and I couldn’t take that away from him.
However, if he had not had those good nursing times and was getting worse not better, I think I would have eventually gone to bottle feeding just for my own sanity.
Everyone has an opinion about breastfeeding. But, in the end you just have to do what feels right to you. It’s not always possible to know the outcome until you try something.
For me sticking with nursing was the right thing to do, but in a different situation it might not be. And, my baby was never severe like some others on this site, so I honestly don’t know what I’d have done in those situations.
Whatever you decide, you are a wonderful mom and are doing the best you can given the situation. That’s all you can do. You can be proud of yourself no matter what.
Now that I can look back on my situation, I can see that. I know that when you’re in the middle of it, you just want to fix it! And being sleep-deprived and flooded with post-partum hormones doesn’t help you see your situation very clearly
I will say a prayer for you today. Your baby sounds similar to mine, and man if I could have figured out what was bothering Caden, I would have done almost anything to fix it. I just about starved doing TED for weeks to no avail. It was so hard. In the end, just time was the only thing that helped him.
