Inactivei was wondering for those who bottle feed and do the thickened feeding, what kinds of nipples do you use and does anyone have trouble trying to cut the nipples etc. im going crazy trying to get some that work without clogging or arabelle getting anything out of it.

InactiveWe used Dr. Brown’s Y-cut but I think a lot of people found this one to be too fast. We thickened quite a bit, 1 TBSP per ounce so it was extremely thick, like sludge, so the Y-cut was perfect.
I’m sure other’s will chime in. I never had luck in cutting the nipples, though as it was always a different flow…..

InactiveI used the Dr. Brown’s but the Y’s were too fast for Myles so I used a stage 3 nipple and snipped it with a sharp scissor to make the hole slightly bigger. I hear they are making stage 4 nipples now, so maybe they’d work. Oh, and I was using 1 tbs for every two ounces.

InactiveI only thickened for a week and when I did, I used stage 3’s and made them slightly larger (we use Dr. Brown’s). Someone did mention they use stage 4’s and they work perfect with cereal. She mentioned she had found them at target.

InactiveKaelyn had an incredibly strong suck. The girl was a vacuum, I swear!
So, we thickened with 1 Tbsp per ounce and used Dr. Brown’s level 3 without cutting them.June 9, 2007 at 9:21 pm #36145Anonymous
Inactivewhen we thickened bens formula with cereal we used 1 tbsp per 2 oz , and stage 3 nipple for the Dr Brown bottles. stage four and the Y cut were too fast for my son.

InactiveI just started thickening my son’s formula with Oatmeal cereal and I’m having problems with the Dr. Brown bottles. The formula does not pass thru the beige plug (spaces). Anyone else have this problem? Any tips?

what i did that helped was to grind the cereal in my mini food chopper so that it was much finer and flowed through the insert much easier. You could also use a food processor, blender, or coffee grinder .
Im not sure how thick your sons formula needs to be, but ours was 1 tbsp cereal to every 2 oz formula.
hope this helps !!!

InactiveThanks so much Kim. I’m going to give that a try. We are working up to honey thick….not sure how many tbsp per oz that will be.

InactiveIt worked like a charm! I actually put too much cereal in the bottle after I ground it. Thanks for the help….much appreciated because the bottles work so well for my son.

InactiveCan you believe after all that, the GI doc wants us to go back to using Simply Thick? Now that, I have no idea how to make it so the thickened formula will pass thru that plug b/c it’s honey consistency. Any more excellent ideas?

Inactivewhy the change?
i use simply thick now…cereal decreased bens appetite too much and it was time to start solids…
i use the #3 nipple without problem… honey thick 1 packet to six oz for us.. ( tapering down to 1/2 just to see how he tolerates it)
i dont really have a problem with it passing through the insert, as much as it clinging to the sides of the bottle.. having to kind of shake down the bottle a little…
its never easy is it?
