If Addy is running a low grade fever, is it better to give her tylenol or motrin to bring it down? She’s not teething but may have a little virus. I have been told that the fever helps fight the infection or virus off and to not medicate unless it is a high fever. Has anyone else heard this? TIA
I’ve also heard the same thing. I would go with your gut on this one. I tend to give the medicine if they seem at all uncomfortable. I ache with even the lowest fever, so I’m a bit more prone to medicate!
As for Tylenol or Motrin. I don’t know that it matters. I tend to give Tylenol during the day and Motrin during the night because its effective for a longer period of time.
I usually try to hold off on medicating for a fever unless they seem uncomfortable or obviously if the fever starts getting too high. I really think the fever helps fight the infection, but they can be so miserable too. So I would just watch her and see how she seems to be feeling. Hope she gets feeling better!
i would not give any fever reducers. this can actually prevent the body from fighting off something. i would only give a fever reducer should the fever become extremely high.
I usually look at the behaviour- that’s the term of reference our ped uses. If the temperature is not high (i.e. less than 101-102) and they’re acting fine, then I dress them lightly and let them be. If it’s high or raising quickly or they seem crabby/uncomfortable, then I’ll give motrin or tylenol.
If it’s a low grade temp and they’re not miserable I usually only give the fever reducer at bedtime. As for which works better, it’s strange but I’ve noticed that it differs between the three of them. For Liza Tylenol definitely works better, but for the other two the two drugs seem to work equally as well.
