InactiveMy daughter Amelia (5 months old) has been making a noise that sounds like she is clearing her throat and she usually sticks her tongue out when doing it. It breaks my heart because I think she is in pain, and that maybe the reflux is burning her throat. We had taken her off of her Prevacid for a little over a month as per my Ped and the GI’s instructions. She got worse, started spitting up yellow bile last week, so she’s back on Prevacid and has been for 3 days (sorry if this is repeated info for some).
How long should it take for the Prevacid to kick in? Has anyone experienced the spitting up of bile? How about the noise she is making? I am going to try Mylanta again tomorrow. I think that will coat her stomach and throat and may be of some relief to her… please reply with some things that have worked for you.

Inactivei find it odd that they took her off prevacid at this age? reflux usually peaks at that time. it can take 2 weeks for the prevacid to kick in. are you using solutabs? make sure you give them 30-60 min before a meal if you are.
i would space the mylanta like 2 hours apart from the PPI.
good luck!

InactiveMy daughter did the throat clearing thing when she was much younger, maybe 2-3 months. I told the pedi nurse that she was doing this and that I thought she had a cold. This was before Gabby was diagnosed. She says babies don’t clear their throats. Now I know that this was the beginning of her reflux symptoms and I’m sure you are right that it’s a noise of discomfort.
It took 10 days for Gabby’s prevacid to kick in but many have needed 2 weeks to see results. Gabby is still on prevacid at 10 months with no wean in sight. Is Amelia teething? 5 months is when Gabby was cutting her first tooth and teething exacerbates reflux. We used a lot of maalox during that time because even the highest dose didn’t help. Hang in there.

InactiveI’d say it was the reflux. stick with the prevacid for a couple of weeks and maybe use the mylanta when she seems most uncomfortable. If you think your bub is spitting up file (yellew/green flurescent colour, I would probably go to the Dr- a bit of yellow/green mucous is OK but if it looks fluero in colour you should get it checked out).

InactiveI agree, it sounds like it’s reflux related. She’s awfully young to have been taken off meds. Most babies don’t outgrow reflux until at least 9 months.
For Myles it took 10 days to see the full effect of Prevacid, but for others it takes 2 weeks, maybe even longer for some.
I’m not sure about the green spit up. Like Therese said if it’s flurescent green or yellow, I’d mention it to the doctor. I never saw that with my reflux babies, and it does sound like it could be bile. Probaby TMI, but I used to puke bile when I had gall bladder attacks, and I’ve seen it once or twice when my kids had severe stomach viruses – usually when they were puking so much there was nothing left to throw up except bile. I’m not sure if that’s normal in babies or not.

I hope she’s feeling better soon.

InactiveHailey has vomitted bile, usually at times when her reflux was most out of control and she was vomitting many times in a row until her stomach was obviously empty. (Usually she was a silent refluxer.) It was bright yellow/green which is the colour of bile. It’s basically pure acid, so it can really burn! What dose of prevacid was she put on? Also if it’s the solutabs, make sure not to give the mylanta near the prevacid. Good luck.

InactiveI just wanted to say that patience with the prevacid is key. I don’t know how many times I posted ” why isn’t it working yet??!!??
It’s so hard for me to be patient in general but especially when your baby is hurting and all you can do is hurry up and wait.
I totally understand that. Kate’s been on the prevacid for over two weeks and I still don’t see the FULL effect yet. Hang in there, it WILL get better. We all totally know how you feel so you are not alone. I’ll bethinking of your lo and hoping she feels better soon.

InactiveThat happened with Addy as well…I did not know it was bile though…I assumed it was just acid but her’s was more of a clear liquid spit up that smelled so bad of acid!
She also cleared her throat too…reflux related I think.

InactiveThank you all! I am so happy to have found this site! It’s great to have support from all of you
! Amelia was a little better today. I know it may get worse before it gets better since it will take a while for the Prevacid to kick in. I am still upset that both docs recommended taking her off of it at 4 months… UGH!
Thanks again for all your kind words of support!Mary
